Abstract

The great scientific and technological advances that are being carried out in the field of quantum communications, accompanied by large investment programs such as EuroQCI, are driving the deployment of quantum network throughout the world. One of the final long-term objectives is to achieve the development of a quantum internet that provides greater security in its services and new functionalities that the current internet does not have. This article analyzes the possible integration strategies of already deployed networks or in the process of being deployed in order to reach a future global quantum network. Two strategies based on the SDN paradigm are proposed, based on a hierarchical controller scheme and on a distributed model. Each of these approaches shows pros and cons and could be applicable in different use cases. To define these strategies, the most relevant deployments of quantum communications networks carried out to date has been analyzed, as well as the different approaches for a quantum network architecture and topology, and the various proposed definitions of what quantum internet is and what are the components that would make it up in an ideal scenario. Finally, several detected opportunities and challenges regarding security and technological aspects are presented.

Quantum Internet for a global network – principles, applications and challenges

Keshab Chandra Nath, Keshab Nath

The Quantum Internet represents a paradigm shift in communication technology, leveraging quantum mechanical principles such as superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem to enable ultra-secure, high-fidelity, and potentially revolutionary global connectivity. Unlike the classical internet, which transmits bits through electromagnetic signals, the Quantum Internet transmits qubits, allowing the creation of unbreakable cryptographic channels, distributed quantum computation, and quantum-enhanced sensing networks. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the Quantum Internet, covering its underlying principles, layered architecture, enabling hardware technologies, and core communication protocols. We analyze current and emerging applications, from secure government and financial communications to healthcare and fundamental physics experiments. The study highlights the unique advantages of quantum networking, such as intrinsic security against eavesdropping, global-scale entanglement distribution, and integration with distributed computing infrastructures. At the same time, it addresses practical limitations, including distance constraints, quantum memory coherence times, infrastructure costs, and security risks associated with hardware vulnerabilities. Special attention is given to the feasibility of large-scale deployment in India, leveraging national programs such as NM-QTA and QuEST, as well as satellite-based quantum communication initiatives by ISRO. The paper concludes with a roadmap for the realization of a global quantum network, identifying technical, infrastructural, and policy challenges that must be addressed in the coming decades.

Quantum Networking: Current Advances and Future Directions in Secure Communication

Nikitha Nikitha Nikitha, A. Maria Franclin Monisha, Pradeep Nayak +2 more

Abstract - Quantum networking represents one of the most transformative developments in modern secure communication. Unlike classical networks that rely on mathematical encryption, quantum networks exploit the physical properties of qubits—superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem—to establish communication channels that are inherently tamper-evident. As quantum technologies mature, applications such as quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum repeaters, quantum teleportation, quantum memory systems, and quantum internet protocols are gaining global traction. This paper consolidates current progress in quantum networking technologies and provides an extended discussion of recent advancements in protocols, hardware components, integrated photonic systems, and machine-learning-enhanced architectures. Additionally, results synthesized from established literature, illustrate performance trends, security gains, and practical deployment challenges in quantum communication networks. The paper also outlines future directions toward scalable quantum internets, hybrid quantum-classical infrastructures, error-corrected qubit networks, satellite-based QKD, and intelligent routing systems. Overall, quantum networking is positioned to redefine the future of secure data transfer, distributed computing, and global communication infrastructures. Advancing the Future of Quantum Communication Networks: the new MadQCI

Alberto Sebastián-Lombraña, Laura Ortiz, Juan P. Brito +10 more

The new quantum communication networks excel in size and power nowadays. Quantum communication infrastructures are set to become a quantum proto-internet with worldwide reach. However, usually technical and technological approximations are homogeneous and difficult to transfer to the real world. Internetworking requires multiple paradigms to be combined in order to provide services in a wide range of scenarios. The new MadQCI aims to be a complex quantum network that, in itself, demonstrates that quantum internet-working is possible with multi-vendor, multi-tenant and multi-technology capabilities, prepared for realistic scenarios demanded by industrial and institutional actors. In addition, it seeks to be a future-proof infrastructure, implementing various generations and types of quantum technology, as well as new connectivities, both classical (such as synchrony signals) and prepared for the new quantum realities —e.g., beyond-QKD primitives, remote quantum metrology or quantum entanglement distribution architectures.

Madrid Quantum Network

Marta Irene García Cid, Laura Ortiz Martín, Vicente Martín Ayuso

The rapid technological advances in the field of quantum communications and the arrival of quantum computers, with a sufficient number of qubits to break the most used encryption algorithms used to date will change the Internet paradigm, as we know it today. Research centers, universities, industries and governments are working hard on the development of more scalable and efficient quantum communications networks, as well as the standardization of protocols, processes and interfaces needed for its industrialization. Many are the definitions of what will be the quantum Internet of the future (its architecture and components), but we offer a more relaxed definition of this concept, so that it is already possible to have a primitive QI with the technology available today, but without all the functionalities and components that will have in the future. As an example, the Madrid Quantum Network meets the requirements of this basic QI, proving to be a first step towards more complex architectures and functionalities. In addition, this concept has direct application as an intranet in restricted military environments, where high levels of security are required and whose extension is limited to metropolitan areas.

Future Quantum Communications and Networking: A Review and Vision

Peiying Zhang, Ning Chen, Shigen Shen +3 more

Based on quantum mechanics, quantum communications have clock synchronization properties and unbreakable security. Recently, related technologies of quantum communications have made breakthroughs one after another, and it has also realized functions and applications that are difficult to achieve in traditional networks. In this era of the rise of quantum networks similar to the eve of the birth of the classical Internet “Arpanet,” researchers are full of longing for the blueprint of the future quantum network. In this work, we summarize, analyze and look forward to quantum communications and networking compared with the traditional Internet. Specifically, the related fundamentals, related technological developments, and existing challenges of quantum networks are firstly analyzed. On this basis, we look ahead and propose a prototype of the future quantum network architectures. Finally, we sort out and analyze the paradigm, principle, and properties of quantum communications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review and vision work on quantum communications and networking.
