Abstract

We report a stable, low loss method for coupling light from silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic chips into optical fibers. The technique is realized using an on-chip tapered waveguide and a cleaved small core optical fiber. The on-chip taper is monolithic and does not require a patterned cladding, thus simplifying the chip fabrication process. The optical fiber segment is composed of a centimeter-long small core fiber (UHNA7) which is spliced to SMF-28 fiber with less than −0.1 dB loss. We observe an overall coupling loss of −0.64 dB with this design. The chip edge and fiber tip can be butt coupled without damaging the on-chip taper or fiber. Friction between the surfaces maintains alignment leading to an observation of ±0.1 dB coupling fluctuation during a ten-day continuous measurement without use of any adhesive. This technique minimizes the potential for generating Raman noise in the fiber, and has good stability compared to coupling strategies based on longer UHNA fibers or fragile lensed fibers. We also applied the edge coupler on a correlated photon pair source and observed a raw coincidence count rate of 1.21 million cps and raw heralding efficiency of 21.3%. We achieved an auto correlation function g H (2) (0) as low as 0.0004 at the low pump power regime.

Achieving stable fiber coupling of quantum dot telecom C-band single-photons to an SOI photonic device

Stephanie Bauer, Dongze Wang, Niklas Hoppe +9 more

The well-established silicon-on-insulator platform is very promising for large-scale integrated photonic and quantum photonic technologies due to the mature manufacturing technology and integration density. Here, we present an efficient and stable fiber-to-chip coupling, which enables the injection of single photons from telecom quantum dots into a silicon-on-insulator photonic chip. Two additional fibers further couple the chip to single-photon detectors. The approach chosen to achieve steady fiber-chip coupling is based on the use of grating couplers steadily packaged with angled single-mode fibers. Using this technique, coupling efficiencies between the fiber and the SOI chip as high as 69.1% per grating coupler (including the taper losses) are reached. The effective interface between the quantum light generated by quantum dots and the silicon components is verified via the measurement of the second-order correlation function using a Hanbury–Brown and Twiss setup. With g(2)(0)=0.051±0.001, it clearly proves the single-photon nature of the injected QD photons. This demonstrates the reliability of the interfacing method and opens the route to employ telecom quantum dots as non-classical light sources with high complexity silicon photonic functionalities.

High-quality silicon single-photon source for practical quantum network

Jinyi Du, George F. R. Chen, Hongwei Gao +3 more

A high-quality heralded single photon source is realized on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. With the help of specially designed ultra-low loss fiber-chip edge couplers, the heralding efficiency of the single photon source system is 56%, after calibrating for a 38% detector efficiency. Compared with the state of the art, this measured heralding efficiency marks a new milestone for integrated, on-chip silicon sources.

Enhanced efficiency of correlated photon pairs generation in silicon nitride with a low-loss 3D edge coupler

Xiaotian Zhu, Changyue Wang, Brent E. Little +4 more

We demonstrate the generation of correlated photon pairs by using a hybrid integrated quantum photonic platform, where the dual-layer platform consists of a high-index doped silica glass (HDSG) layer to accommodate low-loss linear components and an SiN-based layer to accommodate the photon source. Leveraging the low-loss fiber coupling to the HDSG waveguide and the high nonlinearity of the SiN waveguide, we experimentally realize integrated source of photon pairs with high heralding efficiency. The directly measured photon pair rate is up to 87 KHz (corresponding to 1.74 × 10−3 pairs per pulse) when the coincidence-to-accidental ratio is greater than 10. The raw heralding efficiency can reach 18%. If the filtering loss is excluded, the heralding efficiency can further reach 29%.

High coincidence-to-accidental ratio continuous-wave photon-pair generation in a grating-coupled silicon strip waveguide

We demonstrate a very high coincidence-to-accidental ratio of 673 using continuous-wave photon-pair generation in a silicon strip waveguide through spontaneous four-wave mixing. This result is obtained by employing on-chip photonic-crystal-based grating couplers for both low-loss fiber-to-chip coupling and on-chip suppression of generated spontaneous Raman scattering noise. We measure a minimum heralded second-order correlation of , demonstrating that our source operates in the single-photon regime with low noise.

Silicon Waveguide-based Single Photon Source with 12.4% High Off-chip Measured Heralding Efficiency

Jinyi Du, George F. R. Chen, Hongwei Gao +3 more

We designed and fabricated a silicon chip-based heralded single-photon source with 12.4% off-chip measured heralding efficiency. In addition, we achieve a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of 443.7 and heralded self-correlation function of 0.0037 measured at a pair rate of 313kHz. This demonstration of low noise and few multi-photon events at high pair rate is important for practical applications in quantum communication.
