Abstract

We report the direct measurement of isotope shifts of the barium $6{s}^{2}$ $^{1}S_{0}\text{--}5d6p^{3}D_{1}^{\mathrm{o}}$ 413-nm electric quadrupole transition, which is utilized for efficient barium ion trapping via photoionization using a single coherent light source. The measured isotope shifts relative to $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ are $392.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$, $178.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.8\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$, $401.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$, and $124.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ for isotopes with atomic numbers 137, 136, 135, and 134, respectively. We verify the measured isotopes with King plot analysis and compare the result with the formerly known shifts inferred from previous studies on neighboring transitions. The results can be used for efficient isotope selective loading of low-abundant barium ions, while careful suppression of line broadening is required for successful isotopic selectivity.

Coherent excitation of the 6S1/2 to 5D3/2 electric-quadrupole transition in 138 Ba +

Adam Kleczewski, Matthew Hoffman, Jeff A. Sherman +3 more

The electric dipole-forbidden, quadrupole $6{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}5{D}_{3/2}$ transition in Ba${}^{+}$ near 2051 nm, with a natural linewidth of 13 mHz, is attractive for potential observation of parity nonconservation, and also as a clock transition for a barium ion optical frequency standard. This transition also offers a direct means of populating the metastable $5{D}_{3/2}$ state to measure the nuclear magnetic octupole moment in the odd barium isotopes. Light from a diode-pumped, solid-state Tm,Ho:YLF laser operating at 2051 nm is used to coherently drive this transition between resolved Zeeman levels in a single trapped ${}^{138}$Ba${}^{+}$ ion. The frequency of the laser is stabilized to a high-finesse Fabry-P\'erot cavity at 1025 nm after being frequency doubled. Rabi oscillations on this transition indicate a laser-ion coherence time of 3 ms, most likely limited by ambient magnetic field fluctuations.

Photoionization and photoelectric loading of barium ion traps

Andrew Steele, Layne Churchill, Paul F. Griffin +1 more

Simple and effective techniques for loading barium ions into linear Paul traps are demonstrated. Two-step photoionization of neutral barium is achieved using a weak intercombination line ($6{s}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}6s6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}P_{1}$, $\ensuremath{\lambda}=791\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$) followed by excitation above the ionization threshold using a nitrogen gas laser $(\ensuremath{\lambda}=337\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm})$. Isotopic selectivity is achieved by using a near Doppler-free geometry for excitation of the triplet $6s6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}P_{1}$ state. Additionally, we report a particularly simple and efficient trap loading technique that employs an inexpensive uv epoxy curing lamp to generate photoelectrons.

High-Resolution Spectroscopy of $^{173}$Yb$^{+}$ Ions

J. Jiang, A. V. Viatkina, Saaswath JK +7 more

Compared to other stable isotopes of $\rm{Yb}^+$, $^{173}\rm{Yb}^+$ has a richer hyperfine structure, which leads to more favorable clock transitions, spectroscopic techniques for probing new physics, and more sophisticated quantum computing architectures. However, to date, its electronic spectrum remains poorly characterized. Here, we report on efficient laser cooling, state preparation, and detection of a single trapped $^{173}\rm{Yb}^+$ ion. The previously unobserved $^2\!S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2\!D_{3/2}$ electric quadrupole transition at 436 nm is coherently excited, and the isotope shift between $^{171}\rm{Yb}^+$ and $^{173}\rm{Yb}^+$ on this transition is determined with an uncertainty of 1.4 Hz. Using microwave spectroscopy, we resolve the hyperfine structure (HFS) of the ${}^2\!D_{3/2}$ state with a relative uncertainty below $10^{-8}$. From the HFS measurement data, we infer for ${}^{173}$Yb a nuclear magnetic octupole moment $Ω= -0.062(8)\,({\rm b} \times μ_N)$ with uncertainty reduced by more than 2 orders of magnitude compared to previous studies. The data also allow us to determine hyperfine anomalies for the ${}^2\!S_{1/2}$ and ${}^2\!D_{3/2}$ states.

Isotope shifts in the 7s→8s transition of francium: Measurements and comparison to ab initio theory

M. R. Kalita, John A. Behr, Alexandre Gorelov +10 more

We observe the electric-dipole forbidden $7s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}8s$ transition in the francium isotopes $^{208\ensuremath{-}211}\mathrm{Fr}$ and $^{213}\mathrm{Fr}$ using a two-photon excitation scheme. We collect the atoms online from an accelerator and confine them in a magneto-optical trap for the measurements. In combination with previous measurements of the $7s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}7{p}_{1/2}$ transition we perform a King plot analysis. We compare the thus-determined ratio of the field shift constants (1.228 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.019) to results obtained from new ab initio calculations (1.234 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.010).

Shengnan Zhang, B. S. Tiwari, Sandhya Ganesh +2 more

We report the first absolute frequency measurements for the 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 → 5 s 6 d 3 D 1 transition at 394 nm for all the stable strontium isotopes by utilizing repumping induced spectroscopy in a magneto-optical trap. Absolute transition frequency is measured to be 760524409251(25) kHz for Sr 88 . With reference to Sr 88 , the isotope shifts are measured to be 91052(35), 54600(33), and 51641(28) kHz for Sr 84 , Sr 86 , and Sr 87 , respectively. We calculate the hyperfine constants A and B for the fermionic isotope Sr 87 at kHz level. Furthermore, we perform King plot analysis by combining isotope shifts on the 689-nm transition to our data. Isotope-selective photoionization spectroscopy of barium

Darrell J. Armstrong, J. Cooper

We demonstrate an experimental technique that selects the nuclear spin I=0 isotope $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ for spectroscopic measurements from a beam of natural barium containing seven stable isotopes. A cw dye laser is used to optically pump the I=3/2 isotopes $^{135}\mathrm{Ba}$ and $^{137}\mathrm{Ba}$ into the metastable 6s5d $^{1}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ and $^{3}$${\mathit{D}}_{1,2}$ levels via the 6s6p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ excited state, leaving nearly pure $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ in the ground state. Photoionization spectra of the excited 5d6p $^{3}$${\mathit{D}}_{1}$ even isotope state recorded with optical pumping of $^{135}\mathrm{Ba}$ and $^{137}\mathrm{Ba}$ to the metastable levels are essentially devoid of forbidden features associated with the hyperfine interaction in the odd isotopes.
