Disorder effects on the Topological Superconductor with Hubbard Interactions

Abstract

We study the two-dimensional disordered topological superconductor with Hubbard interactions. When the magnitude of the pairing potential is tuned to special values, this interacting model is exactly solvable even when disorders are imposed on the potential term or coupling constants. The topology of this model is investigated in detail by the real space Chern number formula, which computes the topological index of disordered systems to high precisions. It is found that the disorders can drive the system from topological trivial phase to a non-trivial phase, which generalizes the topological Anderson phenomena to interacting models. The self-consistent Born approximation is also employed to understand the influence of the disorders on the parameters of the interacting topological superconductor. It provide an alternative way to understand the topological transitions at weak disordered region.

Topological Anderson insulating phases in the interacting Haldane model

João S. Silva, Eduardo V. Castro, Rubem Mondaini +2 more

We analyze the influence of disorder and strong correlations on the topology of two-dimensional Chern insulators. A mean-field calculation in the half-filled Haldane model with extended Hubbard interactions and Anderson disorder shows that the disorder favors topology in the interacting case and extends the topological phase to a larger region of the Hubbard parameters. In the absence of a staggered potential, we find a novel disorder-driven topological phase with Chern number $C=1$, with the coexistence of topology with long-range spin and charge orders. More conventional topological Anderson insulating phases are also found in the presence of a finite staggered potential.

Four-dimensional topological Anderson insulator with an emergent second Chern number

Rui Chen, Xiao-Xia Yi, Bin Zhou

Four-dimensional (4D) topological insulators, which are impossible in real materials, have attracted much attention by virtue of the recent progress achieved in quantum simulations of higher-dimensional systems. In this paper, we employ the supercell approximation to investigate the disorder effects on a system that supports the 4D topological insulator phases characterized by quantized second Chern numbers and the normal insulator phase. We demonstrate that the 4D topological insulator phases are robust against weak disorders. Moreover, we reveal that disorder can transform a normal insulator to a 4D topological insulator with an emergent second Chern number, referred to as a 4D topological Anderson insulator. An effective-medium theory based on the Born approximation further confirms the numerical conclusions.

Phase transitions and scale invariance in topological Anderson insulators

Bryan D. Assunção, Gerson J. Ferreira, Caio Lewenkopf

We investigate disorder-driven transitions between trivial and topological insulator (TI) phases in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Our study primarily focuses on the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model with Anderson disorder, while other standard 2D TI models exhibit equivalent features. The analysis is based on the local Chern marker (LCM), a local quantity that allows for the characterization of topological transitions in finite and disordered systems. Our simulations indicate that disorder-driven trivial to topological insulator transitions are nicely characterized by ${\mathcal{C}}_{0}$, the disorder-averaged LCM near the central cell of the system. We show that ${\mathcal{C}}_{0}$ is characterized by a single-parameter scaling, namely, ${\mathcal{C}}_{0}(M,W,L)\ensuremath{\equiv}{\mathcal{C}}_{0}(z)$, with $z=[{W}^{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{-}{W}_{c}^{\ensuremath{\mu}}(M)]L$, where $M$ is the Dirac mass, $W$ is the disorder strength, and $L$ is the system size, while ${W}_{c}(M)\ensuremath{\propto}\sqrt{M}$ and $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\approx}2$ stand for the critical disorder strength and the critical exponent, respectively. Our numerical results are in agreement with a theoretical prediction based on a first-order Born approximation analysis. These observations lead us to speculate that the universal scaling function we have found is rather general for amorphous and disorder-driven topological phase transitions.

Attractive Hubbard model with disorder and the generalized Anderson theorem

É. Z. Kuchinskiǐ, N. A. Kuleeva, Michael V. Sadovskii

Using the generalized DMFT+Σ approach, we study the influence of disorder on single-particle properties of the normal phase and the superconducting transition temperature in the attractive Hubbard model. A wide range of attractive potentials U is studied, from the weak coupling region, where both the instability of the normal phase and superconductivity are well described by the BCS model, to the strong-coupling region, where the superconducting transition is due to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of compact Cooper pairs, formed at temperatures much higher than the superconducting transition temperature. We study two typical models of the conduction band with semi-elliptic and flat densities of states, respectively appropriate for three-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. For the semi-elliptic density of states, the disorder influence on all single-particle properties (e.g., density of states) is universal for an arbitrary strength of electronic correlations and disorder and is due to only the general disorder widening of the conduction band. In the case of a flat density of states, universality is absent in the general case, but still the disorder influence is mainly due to band widening, and the universal behavior is restored for large enough disorder. Using the combination of DMFT+Σ and Nozieres-Schmitt-Rink approximations, we study the disorder influence on the superconducting transition temperature T c for a range of characteristic values of U and disorder, including the BCS-BEC crossover region and the limit of strong-coupling. Disorder can either suppress T c (in the weak-coupling region) or significantly increase T c (in the strong-coupling region). However, in all cases, the generalized Anderson theorem is valid and all changes of the superconducting critical temperature are essentially due to only the general disorder widening of the conduction band.

Anderson Topological Superconductor and Entanglement Entropy

Jan Borchmann, Aaron Farrell, T. Pereg-Barnea

In this paper we study the phase diagram of a disordered, spin-orbit coupled superconductor with $s$-wave or $d+id$-wave pairing symmetry in symmetry class $D$. We analyze the topological phase transitions by applying three different methods which include a disorder averaged entanglement entropy, a disorder averaged real-space Chern number, and an evaluation of the momentum space Chern number in a disorder averaged effective model. We find evidence for a disorder-induced topological state. While in the clean limit there is a single phase transition from a trivial phase with a Chern number $C=4$ to a topological phase with $C=1$, in the disordered system there is an intermediate phase with $C=3$. The phase transition from the trivial $C=4$ phase into the intermediate phase with $C=3$ is seen in the real-space calculation of the Chern number. In spite of this, this phase transition is not detectable in the entanglement entropy. A second phase transition from the disorder induced $C=3$ into the $C=1$ phase is seen in all three quantities.

The Haldane model under quenched disorder

Miguel Gonçalves, Pedro Ribeiro, Eduardo V. Castro

We study the half-filled Haldane model with Anderson and binary disorder and determine its phase diagram, as a function of the Haldane flux and staggered sub-lattice potential, for increasing disorder strength. We establish that disorder stabilizes topologically nontrivial phases in regions of the phase diagram where the clean limit is topologically trivial. At small disorder strength, our results agree with analytical predictions obtained using a first order self-consistent Born approximation, and extend to the intermediate and large disorder values where this perturbative approach fails. We further characterize the phases according to their gapless or gapped nature by determining the spectral weight at the Fermi level. We find that gapless topological nontrivial phases are supported for both Anderson and binary disorder. In the binary case, we find a reentrant topological phase where, starting from a trivial region, a topological transition occurs for increasing staggered potential $η$, followed by a second topological transition to the trivial phase for higher values of $η$.
