Resonant entanglement of photon beams by a magnetic field

Abstract

Abstract In spite of the fact that photons do not interact with an external magnetic field unless nonlinearity of QED is taken into account, the latter field may indirectly affect photons in the presence of a charged environment. This opens up an interesting possibility to continuously control the entanglement of photon beams without using any crystalline devices. We study this possibility in the framework of an adequate QED model. In an approximation it was discovered that such entanglement has a resonant nature, namely, a peak behavior at certain magnetic field strengths, depending on characteristics of photon beams direction of the magnetic field and parameters of the charged medium. Numerical calculations illustrating the above-mentioned resonant behavior of the entanglement measure and some concluding remarks are presented.

Entanglement of two-qubit photon beam by magnetic field

Aleksandr D. Levin, Dmitri M Gitman, Ricardo A. Castro

We study the possibility of affecting the entanglement in a two-qubit system consisting of two photons with different fixed frequencies but with two arbitrary linear polarizations, moving in the same direction, with the help of an applied external magnetic field. The interaction between the magnetic field and the photons in our model is achieved through intermediate electrons that interact both with the photons and the magnetic field. The possibility of an exact theoretical analysis of this scheme is based on well-known exact solutions that describe the interaction of an electron subjected to an external magnetic field (or a medium of electrons not interacting with each other) with a quantized field of two photons. We adapt these exact solutions to the case under consideration. Using explicit wave functions for the resulting electromagnetic field, we calculate the entanglement measures (the information and the Schmidt ones) of the photon beam as functions of the applied magnetic field and the parameters of the electron medium.

Entanglement in composite systems due to external influences

Dmitri M Gitman, M. S. Meireles, Aleksandr D. Levin +2 more

In this paper, we consider two examples of an entanglement in two-qubit systems and an example of entanglement in quantum field theory (QFT). In the beginning, we study the entanglement of two spin states by a magnetic field. A nonzero entanglement appears for interacting spins. When the coupling between the spins is constant, we study the entanglement by several types of time-dependent magnetic fields. In the case of a constant difference between [Formula: see text] components of magnetic fields acting on each spin, we find several time-dependent coupling functions [Formula: see text] that also allow us to analyze analytically and numerically the entanglement measure. Considering two photons moving in an electron medium, we demonstrate that they can be entangled in a controlled way by applying an external magnetic field. The magnetic field affecting electrons of the medium affects photons and, thus, causes an entanglement of the photon beams. The third example is related to the effect of production of electron–positron pairs from the vacuum by a strong external electric field. Here, we have used a general nonperturbative expression for the density operator of the system under consideration. Applying a reduction procedure to this density operator, we construct mixed states of electron and positron subsystems. Calculating the von Neumann entropy of such states, we obtain the loss of information due to the reduction and, at the same time, the entanglement measure of electron and positron subsystems. This entanglement can be considered as an example of an entanglement in QFT.

Long-lived entangled states in the double Jaynes–Cummings model taking into account the qubits direct dipole-dipole interaction

Evgeny K. Bashkirov

Background. The study of entangled states in Jaynes–Cummings models and its multiqubit generalizations and extensions remains an important and relevant topic in modern quantum optics, quantum information science and solid state physics. This is due to the fact that such models naturally describe the dynamics of interaction of logical elements of quantum devices, such as quantum computers or quantum networks (qubits) with microwave fields of resonators used to control the states of qubits. In this regard, it is very important to search for the most efficient schemes of generation, control and monitoring of entangled qubit states within the framework of Jaynes–Cummings type models. Aim. To investigate the entanglement dynamics of a pair of qubits, each of which is locked in a single-mode resonator and interacts non-resonantly with the vacuum field mode, in the presence of detuning between frequencies of transitions in the qubits and frequencies of resonator modes and dipole-dipole interaction of the qubits. Methods. To analyze the dynamics of the considered system, the solution of the time-dependent quantum Schrödinger equation is investigated. The exact solution of the above equation in the case of entangled Bell-type initial qubits states is found. This is used to calculate the criterion of entanglement of a pair of qubits – negativity. Numerical modeling of the time dependence of negativity for different values of the parameters of the considered model has been carried out. Results. It is shown that the presence of detuning, the difference in the qubit-photon couplings and the intensity of the dipole-dipole interaction significantly affect the maximum degree of entanglement of the qubit subsystem during its evolution. It is found that for certain parameters of the model under consideration, the initial Bell entangled states of qubits can be considered as long-lived stable states. Conclusion. The possibility of realization of long-lived and robust two-qubit entangled states in the system under consideration has been established. The obtained results can be used for effective control and manipulation of the degree of entanglement of qubits interacting with microwave fields of resonators.

Controllable Kerr nonlinearity in a degenerate V-type inhomogeneously broadening atomic medium aided by a magnetic field

Hoang Minh Dong, Thanh Thai Doan, Anh Nguyen Tuan

Abstract We propose a degenerate V-type inhomogeneously broadening atomic model for Kerr nonlinear control under the support of an external magnetic field. The magnetic field is used as a control knob to convert the medium from transparency to absorption at the resonance center. It is shown that the magnitude and sign of the Kerr nonlinearity index are manipulated by the magnetic field. Especially, we can easily convert the Kerr nonlinearity index from the positive peak into a negative peak, and from zero value can be transferred to enhanced positive or negative peaks simply only by changing the direction or strength of the magnetic field. In addition, the Kerr nonlinearity index under the influence of the temperature, the intensity, and detuning of the control field is also considered. The proposed model can be useful for applications in optical switching and nonlinear optical devices as well as possible experimental implementations.

Quantum entanglement of photons on free electrons

Dmitry N. Makarov

The quantum entanglement of photons is one of the interesting and important manifestations of the quantum world, which is already being used in quantum technologies. The study of new methods of quantum entanglement of photons is one of the promising areas of quantum optics. In this work, it is shown that photons, in a two-mode electromagnetic field, can be quantum entangled when they interact with free electrons. It is shown that the quantum entanglement of such photons can be very large and such photons can be a good source of high quantum entanglement. In addition, it is shown that free electrons can be a beam splitter for a two-mode electromagnetic field.

Quantum entanglement of non-monochromatic photons on free electrons

Dmitry N. Makarov, K. A. Makarova, S. N. Kapustin +2 more

Relatively recently, it became known that the interaction of photons with free electrons leads to quantum entanglement of photons. Such photons can be used in many applications of quantum technologies. Typically, to study quantum entanglement, photons are assumed to be monochromatic, although in reality they are not. This paper shows that if non-monochromatic photons are taken into account, their quantum entanglement, based on von Neumann entropy, can differ significantly from the case of monochromatic photons. It has been shown that the entanglement of non-monochromatic photons can be large and reach the maximum possible value.
