A model of randomly-coupled Pauli spins

Abstract

A bstract We construct a model of Pauli spin operators with all-to-all 4-local interactions by replacing Majorana fermions in the SYK model with spin operators. Equivalently, we replace fermions with hard-core bosons. We study this model numerically and compare the properties with those of the SYK model. We observe a striking quantitative coincidence between the spin model and the SYK model, which suggests that this spin model is strongly chaotic and, perhaps, can play some role in holography. We also discuss the path-integral approach with multi-local fields and the possibility of quantum simulations. This model may be an interesting target for quantum simulations because Pauli spins are easier to implement than fermions on qubit-based quantum devices.

Two-local modifications of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with quantum chaos

Masanori Hanada, Sam van Leuven, Onur Oktay +1 more

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model may provide us with a good starting point for the experimental study of quantum chaos and holography in the laboratory. Still, the four-local interaction of fermions makes quantum simulation challenging, and it would be good to search for simpler models that keep the essence. In this paper, we argue that the four-local interaction may not be important by introducing a few models that have two-local interactions. The first model is a generalization of the spin-SYK model, which is obtained by replacing the spin variables with SU(d) generators. Simulations of this class of models might be straightforward on qudit-based quantum devices. We study the case of d=3,4,5,6 numerically and observe quantum chaos already for two-local interactions in a wide energy range. We also introduce modifications of spin-SYK and SYK models that have similar structures as the SU(d) model (e.g., H=∑_{p,q}J_{pq}χ_{p}χ_{p+1}χ_{q}χ_{q+1} instead of the original SYK Hamiltonian H=∑_{p,q,r,s}J_{pqrs}χ_{p}χ_{q}χ_{r}χ_{s}), which shows strongly chaotic features although the interaction is essentially two-local. These models may be a good starting point for the quantum simulation of the original SYK model.

The double scaling limit of randomly coupled Pauli XY spins

Ryota Watanabe

A bstract We consider the double scaling limit of a model of Pauli spin operators recently studied in Hanada et al. [1] and evaluate the moments of the Hamiltonian by the chord diagrams. We find that they coincide with those of the double scaled SYK model, which makes it more likely that this model may play an important role in the study of holography. We compare the model with another previously studied model. We also speculate on the form of the Hamiltonian in the double scaling limit.

Proposal of realizing the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model from a Kitaev Spin Chain

Zuo, Han-yuan, Zheng-Xin Liu

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is zero-dimensional model simulating quantum chaos using interacting Majorana fermions.Previously proposals have been made to realize the SYK model in fermionic systems that can support majorana zero modes. In this work, we simulate the SYK model in a Kitaev spin chain, where zero modes also exist in the ground state from the fermionic representation of spins. By adding other interactions as perturbations, we lift the degenerate majorana zero modes and obatin an effective SYK interactions. Although the majorana fermions are nonlocal in forms of spin operators, we show that the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) of the majorana fermions can be approximately simulated in forms of spin operators. Our proposal sheds light in simulating the fermonic SKY model and the related physics in purely bosonic systems.

Quantum chaos in the sparse SYK model

Patrick Orman, Hrant Gharibyan, John P. Preskill

A bstract The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a system of N Majorana fermions with random interactions and strongly chaotic dynamics, which at low energy admits a holographically dual description as two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. Hence the SYK model provides a toy model of quantum gravity that might be feasible to simulate with near-term quantum hardware. Motivated by the goal of reducing the resources needed for such a simulation, we study a sparsified version of the SYK model, in which interaction terms are deleted with probability 1 −p . Specifically, we compute numerically the spectral form factor (SFF, the Fourier transform of the Hamiltonian’s eigenvalue pair correlation function) and the nearest-neighbor eigenvalue gap ratio r (characterizing the distribution of gaps between consecutive eigenvalues). We find that when p is greater than a transition value p 1 , which scales as 1/ N 3 , both the SFF and r match the values attained by the full unsparsified model and with expectations from random matrix theory (RMT). But for p < p 1 , deviations from unsparsified SYK and RMT occur, indicating a breakdown of holography in the highly sparsified regime. Below an even smaller value p 2 , which also scales as 1/ N 3 , even the spacing of consecutive eigenvalues differs from RMT values, signaling a complete breakdown of spectral rigidity. Our results cast doubt on the holographic interpretation of very highly sparsified SYK models obtained via machine learning using teleportation infidelity as a loss function.

The local SYK model and its triple-scaling limit

Takanori Anegawa, Norihiro Iizuka, Sunil Kumar Sake

A bstract We study a model of fermions with random couplings similar to conventional SYK with N number of flavours of fermions, at large N . Unlike the conventional SYK model, which has all-to-all couplings, the model we study, which we call local SYK, has a much less number of random couplings, just N in number and with only local interactions. It is shown that there exists a limit in which the local SYK model can be solved using the chord diagram techniques, analogous to the double-scaled limit of conventional SYK. This limit corresponds to taking the size of the fermion coupling terms, q , to scale linearly with N . A further triple-scaling limit is taken to analyze the low energy limit and it is shown that the OTOCs saturate the chaos bound, paralleling the analysis in the conventional SYK.

Bosonic model of quantum holography

Brian G. Swingle, Michael Winer

We analyze a model of qubits that we argue has an emergent quantum gravitational description similar to the fermionic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. The model we consider is known as the quantum $q$-spin model because it features $q$-local interactions between qubits. It was previously studied as a model of a quantum spin glass, and while we find that the model is glassy for $q=2, q=3$, and likely $q=4$, we also find evidence for previously unexpected SYK-like behavior for the quenched free energy down to the lowest temperatures for $q\ensuremath{\ge}5$. This SYK-like physics includes power-law correlation functions and an extensive low-temperature entropy, so we refer to the model as Spin SYK. The model is generic in that it includes all possible $q$-body couplings, lacks most symmetries, and has no spatial structure, so our results can be construed as establishing a certain ubiquity of quantum holography in systems dominated by many-body interactions. Furthermore, we discuss a generalized family of models that includes Spin SYK and which provably exhibit SYK-like physics in the solvable limit of large local Hilbert space dimension. We also comment on the implications of a bosonic system with SYK-like properties for the study of holography, Hamiltonian complexity, and related topics.
