Abstract

A bstract We establish an equivalence between two different quantum quench problems, the joining local quantum quench and the Möbius quench, in the context of (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). Here, in the former, two initially decoupled systems (CFTs) on finite intervals are joined at t = 0. In the latter, we consider the system that is initially prepared in the ground state of the regular homogeneous Hamiltonian on a finite interval and, after t = 0, let it time-evolve by the so-called Möbius Hamiltonian that is spatially inhomogeneous. The equivalence allows us to relate the time-dependent physical observables in one of these problems to those in the other. As an application of the equivalence, we construct a holographic dual of the Möbius quench from that of the local quantum quench. The holographic geometry involves an end-of-the-world brane whose profile exhibits non-trivial dynamics.

Non-equilibrating a black hole with inhomogeneous quantum quench

Kanato Goto, Masahiro Nozaki A, Shinsei Ryu +2 more

A bstract We study quantum quench processes in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) in which the initial thermal equilibrium (Gibbs) state is time-evolved by spatially inhomogeneous Hamiltonians, the so-called Möbius and sine-square-deformed (SSD) Hamiltonians. We found that, when the quench is induced by the SSD Hamiltonian, almost all the degrees of freedom are asymptotically gathered at a single point, resulting in a point-like excitation. This excitation, which we dub black hole-like excitation, carries as much information as the total thermal entropy. In contrast, other parts of the system approach the low-entropy (low-temperature) state at late times. For the quench by the Möbius Hamiltonian, we instead found an eternal periodic oscillation of physical quantities such as von Neumann entropy for subsystems. When the CFT admits a holographic dual description, the SSD quench induces a time-dependent, inhomogeneous deformation of the bulk black hole horizon, which, at late enough times, “touches” the boundary. Our quench setups can be used as a way to create low-temperature states, and, also, simulate the formation and evaporation processes of black holes.

Entanglement dynamics in 2d HCFTs on the curved background: the case of q-Möbius Hamiltonian

Chen Bai, Akihiro Miyata, Masahiro Nozaki A

A bstract We will explore the dynamical property of non-equilibrium phenomena induced by two-dimensional holographic conformal field theory (2d holographic CFT) Hamiltonian on the curved spacetime by studying the time dependence of the entanglement entropy and mutual information. Here, holographic CFT is the CFT having the gravity dual. We will start from the boundary and thermofield double states, evolve the systems in Euclidean time with the Hamiltonian on the curved background, and then evolve them in real-time with the same Hamiltonian. We found that the early- and late-time entanglement structure depends on the curved background, while the entanglement growth does not, and is linear. Furthermore, in the gravity dual for the thermofield double state, this entanglement growth is due to the linear growth of the wormhole, while in the one for the boundary state, it is due to the in-falling of the end of the world brane to the black hole. We discussed the low temperature system can be regarded as the dynamical system induced by the multi-joining quenches. We also discussed the effective description of the high temperature system, called line tension picture.

Holographic quantum circuits from splitting/joining local quenches

Teppei Shimaji, Tadashi Takayanagi, Zixia Wei

Abstract We study three different types of local quenches (local operator, splitting and joining) in both the free fermion and holographic CFTs in two dimensions. We show that the computation of a quantity called entanglement density, provides a systematic method to capture essential properties of local quenches. This allows us to clearly understand the differences between the free and holographic CFTs as well as the distinctions between three local quenches. We also analyze holographic geometries of splitting/joining local quenches using the AdS/BCFT prescription. We show that they are essentially described by time evolutions of boundary surfaces in the bulk AdS. We find that the logarithmic time evolution of entanglement entropy arises from the region behind the Poincaré horizon as well as the evolutions of boundary surfaces. In the CFT side, our analysis of entanglement density suggests such a logarithmic growth is due to initial non-local quantum entanglement just after the quench. Finally, by combining our results, we propose a new class of gravity duals, which are analogous to quantum circuits or tensor networks such as MERA, based on the AdS/BCFT construction.

Scrambling and recovery of quantum information in inhomogeneous quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theories

Kanato Goto, Masahiro Nozaki A, Shinsei Ryu +2 more

We study various quantum quench processes induced by the Möbius/sine-square deformation of the Hamiltonian in two-dimensional conformal field theories starting from the thermofield double state in the two copies of the Hilbert space. These quantum quenches, some of which are directly related to the operator entanglement of the time-evolution operators, allow us to study scrambling and recovery of quantum information. In particular, under the sine-square deformed time evolution, we show from the time dependence of mutual information that the Bell pairs, initially shared by the subsystems of the two Hilbert spaces, may revive even after the mutual information for small subsystems is completely destroyed by quantum information scrambling dynamics. This mutual information is robust against the strong scrambling dynamics. As a consequence, the steady state has a nonlocal correlation shared not by any of two parties but by three parties. In the holographic dual description, a wormhole connecting the two Hilbert spaces may nonlinearly grow with time during the quantum quenches. We also propose effective pictures that describe the dynamics of mutual information during the time evolution by inhomogeneous Hamiltonians. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Entanglement and correlation functions following a local quench: a conformal field theory approach

Pasquale Calabrese, John Cardy

We show that the dynamics resulting from preparing a one-dimensional quantum system in the ground state of two decoupled parts, then joined together and left to evolve unitarily with a translational invariant Hamiltonian (a local quench), can be described by means of quantum field theory. In the case when the corresponding theory is conformal, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy for different bipartitions of the line. We also consider the behavior of one- and two-point correlation functions. All our findings may be explained in terms of a picture, that we believe to be valid more generally, whereby quasiparticles emitted from the joining point at the initial time propagate semiclassically through the system.

Bubble quenches in the AdS/BCFT model

Arthur G. Cavalcanti, Dmitry Melnikov

In this paper we construct time-dependent solutions of three-dimensional gravity in anti--de Sitter space dual to systems with boundaries (BCFTs), following the AdS/BCFT prescription. Such solutions can be discussed in the context of the dynamics of first-order phase transitions, or more generally, in the description of quantum quenches. As an example, we apply the holographic model to calculate the dynamics of the entanglement entropy of a local quench corresponding to a nucleation of a Euclidean bubble. As in the known $1+1$ conformal field theory examples of local cut and glue quenches, the holographic entanglement entropy grows logarithmically with time with the correct universal coefficient. However, in the bubble quench, the behavior is different at late times. The AdS/BCFT model exhibits the light-cone spreading of correlations and saturation at late times. We also find an analytical formula for the entropy at finite temperature. In the latter case, the initial logarithmic growth is followed by the linear law at intermediate times.
