Abstract

We systematically study the effects of higher-order interactions on the $S=\frac{3}{2},1$ orthogonal dimer chains using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. Due to frustration and higher spin, there are rich quantum phases, including three Haldane phases, two gapless phases, and several magnetically ordered phases. To characterize these phases and their phase transitions, we study various physical quantities such as energy gap, energy-level crossing, fidelity susceptibility, spin correlation, entanglement spectrum, and central charge. According to our calculations, the biquadratic term can enhance the Haldane phase regions. In particular, we numerically identify that a Haldane phase in $S=\frac{3}{2}$ case is adiabatically connected to the exact AKLT (Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki) point when adding a bicubic term. Our study on the orthogonal dimer model, which is a 1D version of the Shastry-Sutherland model, provides insights into understanding the possible $S=\frac{3}{2},1$ Haldane phases in quasi-1D and 2D frustrated magnetic materials.

Spin nematics correlations in bilinear-biquadratic S=1 spin chains

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Guido Schmid, Simon Trebst

We present an extensive numerical study of spin quadrupolar correlations in single and coupled bilinear-biquadratic spin one chains, using several methods such as exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group, and strong coupling series expansions. For the single chain, we clarify the dominant correlation function in the enigmatic gapless period-three phase for $\ensuremath{\theta}∊(\ensuremath{\pi}∕4,\ensuremath{\pi}∕2)$, which is of spin quadrupolar nature with a period three spatial structure. Then we revisit the open problem of the possible existence of a ferroquadrupolar phase between the dimerized and the ferromagnetic phases. Although an extended critical region is in principle compatible with the numerical results, a scenario with a huge crossover scale is more plausible. Finally we study the fate of the dimerized phase upon coupling two chains in a ladder geometry. The dimerized phase rapidly vanishes and an extended gapped phase takes over. This gapped phase presumably has dominant short-ranged ferroquadrupolar correlations for $\ensuremath{\theta}∊(\ensuremath{-}3\ensuremath{\pi},4,\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}∕2)$ and---surprisingly---seems to be adiabatically connected to the plaquette single solid phase of the Heisenberg $S=1$ ladder and therefore also with the Haldane phase of isolated chains.

Bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 model in the Haldane and dimerized phases

Mykhailo V. Rakov, Michael Weyrauch

We study the low-lying spectrum of the bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the dimerized and Haldane phases using a tensor renormalization method. At the critical point $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}/4$, the finite-size spectrum predicted by the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model can only partly be confirmed. We find a singlet-singlet gap which does not fit into the WZW systematics. The results obtained are compared to Bethe ansatz, exact diagonalization, and density-matrix renormalization group calculations for specific parameters.

Quantum phase diagram of ferromagnetically coupled singlet dimers on a distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Monalisa Chatterjee, Santanu Pal, Manjit Kumar

Frustrated spin-1/2 model with all-antiferromagnetic exchange on Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) has been extensively explored, and in this work we study the quantum phase diagram of isotropic Heisenberg spin- 1 / 2 model on the SSL with ferromagnetic exchange interactions along leg, and antiferromagnetic couplings along the diagonal bonds ( J ). Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization calculations, we identify four distinct ground-state (gs) phases for this frustrated spin-1/2 model: stripe ( π , 0 ) , stripe ( 0 , π ) , ferromagnetic, and spiral-dimer phases. In the spiral-dimer phase the gs can exhibit dimer formation along the diagonal bonds with or without spins spiral along the x axis or y axis in different parameter regime and these states are connected through crossovers. There is a continuous transition between stripe with a long-range spin-spin correlations and spiral-dimer phase with a short-range correlations. An effective spin parameter is introduced to accurately determine the phase boundaries. Our DMRG results differ significantly from previous Schwinger boson mean-field theory predictions. The spiral phase occurs in a narrow range of the parameter space and shows short-range correlations in the system.

Spontaneous dimerization, critical lines, and short-range correlations in a frustrated spin-1 chain

We report on a detailed investigation of the spin-$1 {J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{3}$ Heisenberg model, a frustrated model with nearest-neighbor coupling ${J}_{1}$, next-nearest neighbor coupling ${J}_{2}$, and a three-site interaction ${J}_{3}\left[({\mathbf{S}}_{i\ensuremath{-}1}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{i})({\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{i+1})+\mathrm{H}.\mathrm{c}.\right]$ previously studied in [Phys. Rev. B 93, 241108(R) (2016)]. Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalizations, we show that the phase boundaries between the Haldane phase, the next-nearest neighbor Haldane phase, and the dimerized phase can be very accurately determined by combining the information deduced from the dimerization, the ground-state energy, the entanglement spectrum and the Berry phase. By a careful investigation of the finite-size spectrum, we also show that the transition between the next-nearest neighbor Haldane phase and the dimerized phase is in the Ising universality class all along the critical line. Furthermore, we justify the conformal embedding of the $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory in terms of a boson and an Ising field, and we explicitly derive a number of consequences of this embedding for the spectrum along the $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{2}$ transition line between the Haldane phase and the dimerized phase. We also show that the solitons along the first-order transition line between the Haldane phase and the dimerized phase carry a spin-1/2, while the domain walls between different dimerization domains inside the dimerized phase carry a spin 1. Finally, we show that short-range correlations change character in the Haldane and dimerized phases through disorder and Lifshitz lines, as well as through the development of short-range dimer correlations in the Haldane phase, leading to a remarkably rich phase diagram.

Quantum phase transitions beyond Landau-Ginzburg theory in one-dimensional space revisited

The phase diagram of the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}$ XXZ chain was obtained by Haldane using bosonization techniques [Haldane, Phys. Rev. B 25, 4925 (1982); Phys. Rev. B 26, 5257 (1982)]. It supports three distinct phases for $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}/{J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}<\frac{1}{2}$, i.e., a gapless algebraic spin-liquid phase, a gapped long-range ordered Neel phase, and a gapped long-range ordered dimer phase. Even though the Neel and dimer phases are not related hierarchically by a pattern of symmetry breaking, it was shown that they meet along a line of quantum critical points with a U(1) symmetry and central charge $c=1$. Here, we extend the analysis made by Haldane on the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}$ XYZ chain using both bosonization and numerical techniques. We show that there are three Neel phases and the dimer phase that are separated from each other by six planes of phase boundaries realizing Gaussian criticality when $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}/{J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}<\frac{1}{2}$. We also show that each long-range ordered phase harbors topological point defects (domain walls) that are dual to those across the phase boundary in that a defect in one ordered phase locally binds the other type of order around its core. By using the bosonization approach, we identify the critical theory that describes simultaneous proliferation of these dual point defects, and show that it supports an emergent U(1) symmetry that originates from the discrete symmetries of the XYZ model. To confirm this numerically, we perform exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group calculations and show that the critical theory is characterized by the central charge $c=1$ with critical exponents that are consistent with those obtained from the bosonization approach. Furthermore, we generalize the field-theoretic description of direct continuous phase transition to higher dimensions, especially in $d=3$, by using a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term. In particular, we propose the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase on the cubic lattice with local quartic interactions as a platform for direct continuous phase transition and deconfined criticality. We discuss possible phase diagrams for the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase on the cubic lattice with these quartic interactions from the renormalization flow of NLSMs.

Quantum Phase Transitions of theS=1 Shastry–Sutherland Model

Akihisa Koga, Norio Kawakami, Manfred Sigrist

We investigate quantum phase transitions of the two-dimensional S=1 Shastry-Sutherland model, which is characterized by the frustrated orthogonal-dimer structure, by means of the exact diagonalization method and the Ising-type series expansion method. We clarify how distinct spin gap phases realized in the chain system are adiabatically connected to those in the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland model. The effect of single-ion anisotropy is also discussed.
