Fiber-coupled broadband quantum memory for polarization-encoded photonic qubits

Sandra W. L. Cheng, Carson J. Evans, T. B. Pittman

Abstract Various near-term quantum networking applications will benefit from low-loss, fiber-coupled photonic quantum memory devices with high efficiencies. We demonstrate a fiber-coupled loop-and-switch quantum memory platform with a pass-through efficiency of ~54% and an overall storage efficiency that scales as ~0.5 N +1 where N is the number of storage cycles. We highlight the trade-off between memory lifetime and qubit accessibility in this platform by using two different storage cycle times of ~40 ns and ~0.5 μs, and demonstrate high-fidelity storage and retrieval of ultra-broadband single-photon polarization qubits in both cases.

Cyclical quantum memory for photonic qubits

T. B. Pittman, J. D. Franson

We have performed a proof-of-principle experiment in which qubits encoded in the polarization states of single photons from a parametric down-conversion source were coherently stored and read out from a quantum memory device. The memory device utilized a simple free-space storage loop, providing a cyclical readout that could be synchronized with the cycle time of a quantum computer. The coherence of the photonic qubits was maintained during switching operations by using a high-speed polarizing Sagnac interferometer switch.

Raman Quantum Memory of Photonic Polarised Entanglement

Dong-Sheng Ding, Wei Zhang, Zhi‐Yuan Zhou +3 more

Quantum entanglement of particles is regarded as a fundamental character in quantum information, in which quantum state should be given for whole system instead of independently describing single particle. Constructing quantum memory of photonic entanglement is essential for realizing quantum networks, which had been performed previously by many memory protocols. Of which Raman quantum memory gives advantages in broadband and high-speed properties, resulting in huge potential in quantum network and quantum computation. However, Raman quantum memory of photonic polarised entanglement is a challenge work and still missing. Here, we report two Raman quantum memories based on gas atomic ensembles: 1. Heralded Raman quantum memory of hybrid entanglement of path and polarization of single photon. 2. Raman storage of two-particle photonic polarised entangled state. Our experimental performances of these two different Raman quantum storages of photonic entanglement show a very promising prospective in quantum information science.
