Abstract

In this paper, a quantitative investigation of the non-classical and quantum non-Gaussian characters of the photon-subtracted displaced Fock state [Formula: see text], where k is the number of photons subtracted and n is Fock parameter, is performed by using a collection of measures like Wigner logarithmic negativity, linear entropy potential, skew information-based measure, and relative entropy of quantum non-Gaussianity. It is noticed that the number of photons subtracted ( k) changes the nonclassicality and quantum non-Gaussianity in a significant amount in the regime of small values of the displacement parameter, whereas the Fock parameter ( n) presents a notable change in the large regime of the displacement parameter. In this respect, the role of the Fock parameter is found to be stronger as compared to the photon subtraction number. Finally, the Wigner function dynamics considering the effects of photon loss channel is used to show that the Wigner negativity can only be detected by highly efficient detectors.

Enhancement of non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of photon added displaced Fock state: A quantitative approach

Priya Malpani, Kishore Thapliyal, J. Banerji +1 more

Non-Gaussian and nonclassical states and processes are already found to be important resources for performing various tasks related to quantum gravity and quantum information processing. The effect of non-Gaussianity inducing operators on the nonclassicality of quantum states has also been studied rigorously. Considering these facts, a quantitative analysis of the nonclassical and non-Gaussian features is performed here for photon added displaced Fock state, as a test case, using a set of measures like entanglement potential, Wigner Yanese skew information, Wigner logarithmic negativity and relative entropy of non-Gaussianity. It is observed that photon addition (Fock parameter) significantly increases the amount of nonclassicalty and non-Gaussianity for small (large) values of the displacement parameter, which decreases both the quantum features monotonically. In this respect, the role of Fock parameter is found to be more prominent and stronger compared to photon addition. Finally, the dynamics of Wigner function under the effect of photon loss channel is used to show that only highly efficient detectors are able to detect Wigner negativity.

Enhancement of Non‐Gaussianity and Nonclassicality of Photon‐Added Displaced Fock State: A Quantitative Approach

Priya Malpani, Kishore Thapliyal, J. Banerji +1 more

Abstract Non‐Gaussian and nonclassical states and processes are already found to be important resources for performing various tasks related to quantum gravity and quantum information processing. Considering these facts, a quantitative analysis of the nonclassical and non‐Gaussian features is performed here for photon added displaced Fock state, as a test case, using a set of measures, namely entanglement potential, Wigner–Yanese skew information, Wigner logarithmic negativity, and relative entropy of non‐Gaussianity. It is observed that Fock parameter always increases the amount of nonclassicality and non‐Gaussianity, while photon addition is effective only for small values of the displacement parameter. Further, the nonclassical and non‐Gaussian effects decrease initially with an increase in the displacement parameter before increasing for the large displacement to saturate to the corresponding Fock state (equivalently displaced Fock state) value. Finally, dynamics of the Wigner function under the effect of photon loss channel is used to show that only highly efficient detectors are able to detect Wigner negativity.

Detecting nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of a coherent superposed quantum state

Deepak Deepak, Arpita Chatterjee

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of a coherent superposed quantum state (CSQS) which is obtained by applying a coherent superposition of field annihilation (a) and creation ( a † ) operators, N ( t a + r a † ) to a classical coherent state | α ⟩ , where t and r are scalars with t 2 + r 2 = 1 . Such an operation, when applied on states having classical characters, introduces strong nonclassicality. We use different criteria to check the nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of the considered quantum state. We first compute the Wigner function of CSQS. To study the nonclassicality of the considered state we further use (a) linear entropy (b) Wigner logarithmic negativity and (c) skew information based measure. Relative entropy based measure is considered to analyze the variation in non-Gaussianity of CSQS. Finally, the dynamics of the Wigner function evolving under the photon loss channel is addressed to probe the effect of noise on nonclassicality as well as non-Gaussianity of CSQS.

Decoherence and nonclassicality of photon-added/subtracted multi-mode Gaussian states

Anaelle Hertz, Stephan De Bièvre

Photon addition and subtraction render Gaussian states non-Gaussian. We provide a quantitative analysis of the change in nonclassicality produced by these processes by analyzing the Wigner negativity and quadrature coherence scale (QCS) of the resulting states. The QCS is a recently introduced measure of nonclassicality [PRL 122, 080402 (2019), PRL 124, 090402 (2020)], that we show to undergo a relative increase under photon addition/subtraction that can be as large as 200\%. This implies that the degaussification and the concomitant increase of nonclassicality come at a cost. Indeed, the QCS is proportional to the decoherence rate of the state so that the resulting states are considerably more prone to environmental decoherence. Our results are quantitative and rely on explicit and general expressions for the characteristic and Wigner functions of photon added/subtracted single- and multi-mode Gaussian states for which we provide a simple and straightforward derivation. These expressions further allow us to certify the quantum non-Gaussianity of the photon-subtracted states with positive Wigner function.

General Photon Subtraction from a Gaussian Perspective

Niklas Budinger, Ulrik L. Andersen, Peter van Loock

A near-deterministic source of non-Gaussianity is the missing piece to reach universal and fault-tolerant quantum computing with continuous-variable optics. Due to a lack of strong non-linearities, the probabilistic photon-subtracted Gaussian states remain the most promising contender. In combination with Gaussian measurements and single-mode feed-forward operations, they have been shown to provide sufficient non-Gaussianity at high rates. However, these existing breeding protocols lack the necessary loss tolerance to be experimentally feasible. In this work, we introduce a mathematical formalism based on the application of a Gaussian blur and filter on the measured Fock Wigner function to describe general photon-subtracted Gaussian states. Within our representation, the initial squeezing, Gaussian measurements, and photon loss can all be understood as contributions to the total blurring and interchanged accordingly. We find that this intuitive approach can be used to find improvements to cat, cubic phase, and GKP state generation by compromising between success rates, feed-forward compatibility, and loss tolerance. In the case of multiple photon subtractions, this is achieved by introducing a hybrid setup variant bridging the gap between protocols based on breeding and post-selection. Finally, we establish a general lower bound on the resources needed to generate a given target state near-deterministically by introducing the expected Wigner logarithmic negativity as an additive monotone of non-Gaussianity.

Nonclassicality gain/loss through photon-addition/subtraction on multi-mode Gaussian states

Hertz, Anaelle, Stephan De Bièvre

Photon addition and subtraction are well-known to render Gaussian states non Gaussian. We evaluate how their optical nonclassicality is affected by the photon addition/subtraction process. It is known that photon addition always transforms a Gaussian state into a nonclassical state. We show that photon subtraction transforms classical states into classical ones and nonclassical ones into nonclassical ones. For a quantitative analysis of the resulting nonclassicality, we use a recently introduced nonclassicality witness, the quadrature coherence scale, and compute the relative nonclassicality gain of the single-photon added/subtracted Gaussian states with respect to the original Gaussian states. For arbitrary single-mode Gaussian states, we show that this relative gain can be substantial in both cases. Whereas the gain is always higher for photon-added states, it is only slightly so for a large parameter range and in particular in the limit of high squeezing, where both gains are identical. We also analyze the Wigner negative volume of the photon-added/subtracted states. Whereas photon-added Gaussian states are never Wigner positive, we show that single-mode photon-subtracted states are Wigner positive if and only if they are weakly nonclassical or classical. Our analysis relies on explicit and general expressions for the characteristic and Wigner functions of photon added/subtracted multi-mode Gaussian states that we obtain simply.
