Abstract

We study the frustrated and dimerized ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ chain using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Based on numerical calculations of the second derivative of energy, spin gap, spin-spin correlations, string order parameter (SOP), and entanglement spectrum (ES), we obtain the ground-state phase diagram for a wide range of ${J}_{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}/{J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}/|{J}_{1}|$ values. This phase diagram reveals a ferromagnetic phase and two distinct valence bond solid (VBS) phases. The first VBS phase, referred to as ${\mathcal{D}}_{3}$-VBS, is typified by the formation of valence bonds between third-neighbor spin-1/2's, persisting as a continuation from the ${J}_{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}/{J}_{1}=1$ limit. Alternatively, the second VBS phase, referred to as mixed-VBS, exhibits a coexistence of both second- and third-neighbor valence bonds, interpreted as a continuation from the ${J}_{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}/{J}_{1}=0$ case. Remarkably, both VBS states are identified as being of Haldane type, marked by a finite SOP and twofold ES degeneracy. Unexpectedly, our analysis uncovers a significant enhancement of the valence bond stability at the boundary of the two VBS phases. This study provides an empirical demonstration of a nontrivial quantum phase transition between different topological VBS states in spin-1/2 chains. Moreover, we find that the ground state of the relevant quasi-one-dimensional material ${\mathrm{LiCuSbO}}_{4}$ is classified as the ${\mathcal{D}}_{3}$-VBS state. Collectively, these results mark a substantial stride forward in our comprehension of quantum phase transitions and topological states.

Coexistence of valence-bond formation and topological order in the Frustrated Ferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ Chain

Cliò Efthimia Agrapidis, Stefan-Ludwig Drechsler, Jeroen van den Brink +1 more

Frustrated one-dimensional (1D) magnets are known as ideal playgrounds for new exotic quantum phenomena to emerge. We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin- \frac{1}{2} 1 2 ferromagnetic ( J_1 J 1 ) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ( J_2 J 2 ) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at J_2/|J_1|>1/4 J 2 / | J 1 | > 1 / 4 and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking through order by disorder. Quite interestingly, this VBS state has a Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological order. This is the first example of a frustrated spin chain in which quantum fluctuations induce gapped topological order.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin- 12 frustrated ferromagnetic XXZ chain: Haldane dimer phase and gapped/gapless chiral phases

Shunsuke Furukawa, Masahiro Sato, Shigeki Onoda +1 more

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (${J}_{1}<0$) and antiferromagnetic second-neighbor (${J}_{2}>0$) exchange couplings is studied by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithm and effective field theories. For the SU(2)-symmetric (Heisenberg) case, we show that the nonmagnetic phase in the range $\ensuremath{-}4<{J}_{1}/{J}_{2}<0$ has a small but finite ferromagnetic dimer order. We argue that this spontaneous dimer order is associated with effective spin-1 degrees of freedom on dimerized bonds, which collectively form a valence bond solid state as in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (the Haldane spin chain). We thus call this phase the Haldane dimer phase. With easy-plane anisotropy, the model exhibits a variety of phases including the vector chiral phase with gapless excitations and the even-parity dimer and N\'eel phases with gapped excitations, in addition to the Haldane dimer phase. Furthermore, we show the existence of gapped phases with coexisting orders in narrow regions that intervene between the gapless chiral phase and any one of Haldane dimer, even-parity dimer, and N\'eel phases. Possible implications for quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprates are discussed.

Successive valence-bond-state transitions in quantum mixed spin chains

Zhaoxin Xu, Jianhui Dai, He-Ping Ying +1 more

We study quantum mixed-spin chains consisting of two integer spins ${S}^{1}$ and two half integer spins ${S}^{2}$ arrayed as ${S}^{1}\ensuremath{-}{S}^{1}\ensuremath{-}{S}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{S}^{2}$ in a unit cell with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings ${J}_{1}$ ${(J}_{2})$ between the spins of equal (different) magnitudes. By varying the ratio of two competing couplings, $\ensuremath{\alpha}{=J}_{2}{/J}_{1},$ the systems undergo successive quantum phase transitions between different valence-bond-solid (VBS) states accompanied by the vanishing of the energy gap. By a quantum Monte Carlo simulation with an improved loop cluster algorithm, we find one critical point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}=0.762(1)$ in a $1\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}$ chain and two critical points ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c1}=0.479(1)$ and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c2}=1.318(1)$ in a $1\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{-}\frac{3}{2}\ensuremath{-}\frac{3}{2}$ chain, respectively. The calculated expectation values of the Lieb-Shultz-Mattis twist operator show the characteristic features of the single VBS transition in the $1\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}$ chain and two successive VBS transitions in the $1\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{-}\frac{3}{2}\ensuremath{-}\frac{3}{2}$ chain at these critical points.

Topological phases in half-integer higher spin J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg chains

Sahinur Reja, Satoshi Nishimoto

We study the ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ chains with half-integer spins ranging from $S=\frac{3}{2}$ to $S=\frac{11}{2}$ using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We map out the ground-state phase diagrams as a function of $\frac{{J}_{2}}{{J}_{1}}$ containing topological phases with alternating $\frac{2S\ensuremath{-}1}{2}$ and $\frac{2S+1}{2}$ valence bonds. We identify these topological phases and their boundaries by calculating the string order parameter, the dimer order parameter, and the spin gap for those $\mathrm{high}\text{\ensuremath{-}}S$ systems in the thermodynamic limit (finite-size scaling). We find that these topological regions narrow down inversely with $S$ and converge to a single point at $\frac{{J}_{2}}{{J}_{1}}=\frac{1}{4}$ in the classical limit---a critical threshold between commensurate and incommensurate orders. In addition, we extend the discussion of the Majumder-Ghosh state, previously noted only for $S=\frac{1}{2}$, and speculate about its possible presence as a ground state in half-integer high-spin systems over a substantial range of $\frac{{J}_{2}}{{J}_{1}}$ values.

Variety of order-by-disorder phases in the asymmetric J1−J2 zigzag ladder: From the delta chain to the J1−J2 chain

Tomoki Yamaguchi, Stefan‐Ludwig Drechsler, Y. Ohta +1 more

We study an asymmetric ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ zigzag ladder consisting of two different spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic (AFM; ${J}_{2}, \ensuremath{\gamma}{J}_{2}>0$) Heisenberg legs coupled by zigzag-shaped ferromagnetic (FM; ${J}_{1}<0$) interleg interaction. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group based calculations, the ground-state phase diagram is obtained as functions of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and ${J}_{2}/|{J}_{1}|$. It contains four kinds of frustration-induced ordered phases except a trivial FM phase. Two of the ordered phases are valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization, which is a rather conventional order by disorder. Still, it is interesting to note that the VBS states possesses an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki--type topological hidden order. The remaining two phases are ferrimagnetic orders, each of which is distinguished by commensurate or incommensurate spin-spin correlation. It is striking that the ferrimagnetic orders are not associated with geometrical symmetry breaking; instead, the global spin-rotation symmetry is broken. In other words, the system lowers its energy via the FM interleg interaction by polarizing both of the AFM Heisenberg legs. This is a rare type of order by disorder. Besides, the incommensurate ferrimagnetic state appears as a consequence of the competition between a polarization and a critical Tomonaga-Luttinger--liquid behavior in the AFM Heisenberg legs.

Absence of spin liquid phase in the J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Xiangjian Qian, Mingpu Qin

We perform an in-depth investigation of the phase diagram of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. We take advantage of density matrix renormalization group and fully augmented matrix product states methods and reach unprecedented accuracy with large bond dimensions. We utilize excited-level crossing analysis to pinpoint the phase transition points. It was believed before that there exists a narrow spin liquid phase sandwiched by the N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and valence bond solid (VBS) phases. Through careful finite-size scaling of the level crossing points, we find a direct phase transition between the N\'eel AFM and VBS phases at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.535(3)$, suggesting the absence of an intermediate spin liquid phase. We also provide accurate results for ground-state energies for a variety of sizes, from which we find that the transition between the N\'eel AFM and VBS phases is continuous. These results indicate the existence of a deconfined quantum critical point at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.535(3)$ in the model. From the crossing of the first derivative of the energies with ${J}_{2}$ for different sizes, we also determine the precise location of the first-order phase transition between the VBS and stripe AFM phases at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.610(5)$.
