Abstract

Abstract Following the general theory of categorified quantum groups developed by the author previously, we construct the Drinfel’d double 2-bialgebra associated to a finite group N = G0. For N = ℤ2, we explicitly compute the braided 2-categories of 2-representations of certain version of this Drinfel’d double 2-bialgebra, and prove that they characterize precisely the 4d toric code and its spin-ℤ2 variant. This result relates the two descriptions (categorical vs. field theoretical) of 4d gapped topological phases in existing literature and displays an instance of higher Tannakian duality for braided 2-categories. In particular, we show that particular twists of the underlying Drinfel’d double 2-bialgebra is responsible for much of the higher-structural properties that arise in 4d topological orders.

Dualities in One-Dimensional Quantum Lattice Models: Topological Sectors

Laurens Lootens, Clement Delcamp, Frank Verstraete

It has been a long-standing open problem to construct a general framework for relating the spectra of dual theories to each other. Here, we solve this problem for the case of one-dimensional quantum lattice models with symmetry-twisted boundary conditions. In Ref. [PRX Quantum 4, 020357], dualities are defined between (categorically) symmetric models that only differ in a choice of module category. Using matrix product operators, we construct from the data of module functors explicit symmetry operators preserving boundary conditions as well as intertwiners mapping topological sectors of dual models onto one another. We illustrate our construction with a family of examples that are in the duality class of the spin- 12 Heisenberg XXZ model. One model has symmetry operators forming the fusion category Rep(S3) of representations of the group S3 . We find that the mapping between its topological sectors and those of the XXZ model is associated with the nontrivial braided autoequivalence of the Drinfel’d center of Rep(S3) . Many-body models for topological quantum information

Courtney G Brell

We develop and investigate several quantum many-body spin models of use for topological quantum information processing and storage. These models fall into two categories: those that are designed to be more realistic than alternative models with similar phenomenology, and those that are designed to have richer phenomenology than related models. In the first category, we present a procedure to obtain the Hamiltonians of the toric code and Kitaev quantum double models as the perturbative low-energy limits of entirely two-body Hamiltonians. This construction reproduces the target models' behavior using only couplings which are natural in terms of the original Hamiltonians. As an extension of this work, we construct parent Hamiltonians involving only local 2-body interactions for a broad class of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). We define a perturbative Hamiltonian with a finite order low energy effective Hamiltonian that is a gapped, frustration-free parent Hamiltonian for an encoded version of a desired PEPS. For topologically ordered PEPS, the ground space of the low energy effective Hamiltonian is shown to be in the same phase as the desired state to all orders of perturbation theory. We then move on to define models that generalize the phenomenology of several well-known systems. We first define generalized cluster states based on finite group algebras, and investigate properties of these states including their PEPS representations, global symmetries, relationship to the Kitaev quantum double models, and possible applications. Finally, we propose a generalization of the color codes based on finite groups. For non-Abelian groups, the resulting model supports non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles and topological order. We examine the properties of these models such as their relationship to Kitaev quantum double models, quasiparticle spectrum, and boundary structure.

Braid group representations from braiding gapped boundaries of Dijkgraaf–Witten theories

Nicolás Escobar-Velásquez, César Galíndo, Zhenghan Wang

We study representations of the braid groups from braiding gapped boundaries of Dijkgraaf-Witten theories and their twisted generalizations, which are (twisted) quantum doubled topological orders in two spatial dimensions. We show that the resulting braid (pure braid) representations are all monomial with respect to some specific bases, hence all such representation images of the braid groups are finite groups. We give explicit formulas for the monomial matrices and the ground state degeneracy of the Kitaev models that are Hamiltonian realizations of Dijkgraaf-Witten theories. Our results imply that braiding gapped boundaries alone cannot provide universal gate sets for topological quantum computing with gapped boundaries.

Excitation basis for (3+1)d topological phases

Clement Delcamp

We consider an exactly solvable model in 3+1 dimensions, based on a finite group, which is a natural generalization of Kitaev’s quantum double model. The corresponding lattice Hamiltonian yields excitations located at torus-boundaries. By cutting open the three-torus, we obtain a manifold bounded by two tori which supports states satisfying a higher-dimensional version of Ocneanu’s tube algebra. This defines an algebraic structure extending the Drinfel’d double. Its irreducible representations, labeled by two fluxes and one charge, characterize the torus-excitations. The tensor product of such representations is introduced in order to construct a basis for (3+1)d gauge models which relies upon the fusion of the defect excitations. This basis is defined on manifolds of the form $$ \varSigma \times {\mathbb{S}}_1 $$ , with Σ a two-dimensional Riemann surface. As such, our construction is closely related to dimensional reduction from (3+1)d to (2+1)d topological orders.

Tensor network approach to electromagnetic duality in (3+1)d topological gauge models

Clement Delcamp

Abstract Given the Hamiltonian realisation of a topological (3+1)d gauge theory with finite group G, we consider a family of tensor network representations of its ground state subspace. This family is indexed by gapped boundary conditions encoded into module 2-categories over the input spherical fusion 2-category. Individual tensors are characterised by symmetry conditions with respect to non-local operators acting on entanglement degrees of freedom. In the case of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, we show that the symmetry operators form the fusion 2-categories 2VecG of G-graded 2-vector spaces and 2Rep(G) of 2-representations of G, respectively. In virtue of the Morita equivalence between 2VecG and 2Rep(G) — which we explicitly establish — the topological order can be realised as the Drinfel’d centre of either 2-category of operators; this is a realisation of the electromagnetic duality of the theory. Specialising to the case G = ℤ2, we recover tensor network representations that were recently introduced, as well as the relation between the electromagnetic duality of a pure ℤ2 gauge theory and the Kramers-Wannier duality of a boundary Ising model.
