Abstract

It has been a long-standing open problem to construct a general framework for relating the spectra of dual theories to each other. Here, we solve this problem for the case of one-dimensional quantum lattice models with symmetry-twisted boundary conditions. In Ref. [PRX Quantum 4, 020357], dualities are defined between (categorically) symmetric models that only differ in a choice of module category. Using matrix product operators, we construct from the data of module functors explicit symmetry operators preserving boundary conditions as well as intertwiners mapping topological sectors of dual models onto one another. We illustrate our construction with a family of examples that are in the duality class of the spin- 12 Heisenberg XXZ model. One model has symmetry operators forming the fusion category Rep(S3) of representations of the group S3 . We find that the mapping between its topological sectors and those of the XXZ model is associated with the nontrivial braided autoequivalence of the Drinfel’d center of Rep(S3) . Low-Depth Unitary Quantum Circuits for Dualities in One-Dimensional Quantum Lattice Models

Laurens Lootens, Clement Delcamp, Dominic J. Williamson +1 more

A systematic approach to dualities in symmetric (1+1)d quantum lattice models has recently been proposed in terms of module categories over the symmetry fusion categories. By characterizing the nontrivial way in which dualities intertwine closed boundary conditions and charge sectors, these can be implemented by unitary matrix product operators. In this Letter, we explain how to turn such duality operators into unitary linear depth quantum circuits via the introduction of ancillary degrees of freedom that keep track of the various sectors. The linear depth is consistent with the fact that these dualities change the phase of the states on which they act. When supplemented with measurements, we show that dualities with respect to symmetries encoded into nilpotent fusion categories can be realized in constant depth. The resulting circuits can for instance be used to efficiently prepare short- and long-range entangled states or map between different gapped boundaries of (2+1)d topological models.

Twisted gauging and topological sectors in (2+1)d Abelian lattice gauge theories

Bram Vancraeynest-De Cuiper, Clement Delcamp

Given a two-dimensional quantum lattice model with an Abelian gauge theory interpretation, we investigate a duality operation that amounts to gauging its invertible 1-form symmetry, followed by gauging the resulting 0-form symmetry in a twisted way via a choice of discrete torsion. Using tensor networks, we introduce explicit lattice realisations of the so-called condensation defects, which are obtained by gauging the 1-form symmetry along submanifolds of spacetime, and employ the same calculus to realise the duality operators. By leveraging these tensor network operators, we compute the non-trivial interplay between symmetry-twisted boundary conditions and charge sectors under the duality operation, enabling us to construct isometries relating the dual Hamiltonians. Whenever a lattice gauge theory is left invariant under the duality operation, we explore the possibility of promoting the self-duality to an internal symmetry. We argue that this results in a symmetry structure that encodes the 2-representations of a 2-group.

Dualities between 2+1d fusion surface models from braided fusion categories

Luisa Eck

Fusion surface models generalize the concept of anyon chains to 2+1 dimensions, utilizing fusion 2-categories as their input. We investigate bond-algebraic dualities in these systems and show that distinct module tensor categories \mathcal{M} ℳ over the same braided fusion category \mathcal{B} ℬ give rise to dual lattice models. This extends the 1+1d result that dualities in anyon chains are classified by module categories over fusion categories. We analyze two concrete examples: (i) a \text{Rep}(S_3) Rep ( S 3 ) model with a constrained Hilbert space, dual to the spin- \tfrac{1}{2} 1 2 XXZ model on the honeycomb lattice, and (ii) a bilayer Kitaev honeycomb model, dual to a spin- \tfrac{1}{2} 1 2 model with XXZ and Ising interactions. Unlike regular \mathcal{M}=\mathcal{B} ℳ = ℬ fusion surface models, which conserve only 1-form symmetries, models constructed from \mathcal{M} ≠ \mathcal{B} ℳ ≠ ℬ can exhibit both 1-form and 0-form symmetries, including non-invertible ones.

Tensor network approach to electromagnetic duality in (3+1)d topological gauge models

Clement Delcamp

Abstract Given the Hamiltonian realisation of a topological (3+1)d gauge theory with finite group G, we consider a family of tensor network representations of its ground state subspace. This family is indexed by gapped boundary conditions encoded into module 2-categories over the input spherical fusion 2-category. Individual tensors are characterised by symmetry conditions with respect to non-local operators acting on entanglement degrees of freedom. In the case of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, we show that the symmetry operators form the fusion 2-categories 2VecG of G-graded 2-vector spaces and 2Rep(G) of 2-representations of G, respectively. In virtue of the Morita equivalence between 2VecG and 2Rep(G) — which we explicitly establish — the topological order can be realised as the Drinfel’d centre of either 2-category of operators; this is a realisation of the electromagnetic duality of the theory. Specialising to the case G = ℤ2, we recover tensor network representations that were recently introduced, as well as the relation between the electromagnetic duality of a pure ℤ2 gauge theory and the Kramers-Wannier duality of a boundary Ising model.

Global symmetries of quantum lattice models under non-invertible dualities

Weiguang Cao, Yuan Miao, Masahito Yamazaki

Non-invertible dualities/symmetries have become an important tool in the study of quantum field theories and quantum lattice models in recent years. One of the most studied examples is non-invertible dualities obtained by gauging a discrete group. When the physical system has more global symmetries than the gauged symmetry, it has not been thoroughly investigated how those global symmetries transform under non-invertible duality. In this paper, we study the change of global symmetries under non-invertible duality of gauging a discrete group G G in the context of (1+1)-dimensional quantum lattice models. We obtain the global symmetries of the dual model by focusing on different Hilbert space sectors determined by the \mathrm{Rep}(G) R e p ( G ) symmetry. We provide general conjectures of global symmetries of the dual model forming an algebraic ring of the double cosets. We present concrete examples of the XXZ models and the duals, providing strong evidence for the conjectures.
