Abstract

We study the effects of quasiperiodic Aubry-Andr\'e (AA) disorder and interactions on a one-dimensional all-bands-flat (ABF) diamond chain. We consider the application of disorder in two ways: A symmetric one, where the same disorder is applied to the top and bottom sites of a unit cell, and an antisymmetric one, where the disorder applied to the top and bottom sites are of equal magnitude but with opposite signs. The single-particle wave-packet dynamics for the clean system and when the disorder is applied symmetrically show quantum caging; in the antisymmetric case, the wave packet spreads over the entire lattice. These results agree with our previous study, where compact localization was observed in the case of the clean system and for symmetrically disordered diamond lattices. In the presence of nearest-neighbor interactions, nonergodic phases are observed in the case of a clean system and symmetrical disorder; at higher disorder strengths, we find an MBL-like phase in the symmetric case. However, many-body nonequilibrium dynamics of the system from carefully engineered initial states exhibit quantum caging. In the antisymmetric case, a nonergodic mixed phase, a thermal phase, and an MBL-like phases, respectively, are observed at low, intermediate, and high disorder strengths. We observe an absence of caging and initial state dependence (except at the intermediate disorder strength) in the study of nonequilibrium dynamics.

Interplay of disorder and interactions in a flat-band supporting diamond chain

Nilanjan Roy, Ajith Ramachandran, Auditya Sharma

We systematically study the effect of disorder and interactions on a quasi-one-dimensional diamond chain possessing flat bands.Disorder localizes all the single-particle eigenstates, while at low disorder strengths, we obtain weak flat-band based localization (FBL), at high disorder strengths, we see conventional Anderson localization (AL).The compactly localized (CL) eigenstates of flat bands show a persisting oscillatory recurrence in the study of single-particle wave-packet dynamics. For low disorder, a damped oscillatory recurrence behavior is observed which is absent for high disorder.Noninteracting many-particle fermion states also follow the same trend except showing a delocalizing tendency at intermediate disorder due to the fermionic statistics in the system. As interactions are switched on, for the finite sizes that we are able to study, a nonergodic "mixed phase" is observed at low disorder which is separated from the MBL phase at high disorder by a thermal phase at intermediate disorder.A study of many-body nonequilibrium dynamics reinforces these findings.

Quantum caging in interacting many-body all-bands-flat lattices

Carlo Danieli, Alexei Andreanov, Thudiyangal Mithun +1 more

We consider translationally invariant tight-binding all-bands-flat networks which lack dispersion. In a recent work [C. Danieli et al., Phys. Rev. B 104, 085131 (2021)], we identified the subset of these networks that shows nonlinear caging in the presence of Kerr-like local nonlinearities, i.e., it preserves nonexcited network sites and therefore keeps compact excitations compact. Here we replace nonlinear terms by Bose-Hubbard interactions and study quantum caging. We identify the quantum caging conditions that are related to the nonlinear caging conditions and that guarantee the existence of an extensive set of conserved quantities in any lattice dimension, as first revealed in Tovmasyan et al. [Phys. Rev. B 98, 134513 (2018)] for a set of specific networks. Consequently, transport is realized through moving pairs of interacting particles that break the single-particle caging. We further prove the existence of degenerate energy renormalized compact states for any finite number $M$ of participating particles in one- and higher-dimensional lattice---results that explain and generalize previous observations for two particles on a diamond chain [Vidal et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3906 (2000)].

Many-body delocalization dynamics in long Aubry-André quasiperiodic chains

Elmer V. H. Doggen, A. D. Mirlin

We study quench dynamics in an interacting spin chain with a quasiperiodic on-site field, known as the interacting Aubry-Andr\'e model of many-body localization. Using the time-dependent variational principle, we assess the late-time behavior for chains up to $L=50$. We find that the choice of periodicity $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}$ of the quasiperiodic field influences the dynamics. For $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}=(\sqrt{5}\ensuremath{-}1)/2$ (the inverse golden ratio) and interaction $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}=1$, the model most frequently considered in the literature, we obtain the critical disorder ${W}_{c}=4.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5$ in units where the noninteracting transition is at $W=2$. At the same time, for periodicity $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}=\sqrt{2}/2$ we obtain a considerably higher critical value, ${W}_{c}=7.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5$. Finite-size effects on the critical disorder ${W}_{c}$ are much weaker than in the purely random case. This supports the enhancement of ${W}_{c}$ in the case of a purely random potential by rare ``ergodic spots,'' which do not occur in the quasiperiodic case. Further, the data suggest that the decay of the antiferromagnetic order in the delocalized phase is faster than a power law.

Observation of flat-band localized state in a one-dimensional diamond momentum lattice of ultracold atoms

Chao 超 Zeng 曾, Yue-Ran Shi, Yi-Yi 一屹 Mao 毛 +5 more

We investigated the one-dimensional diamond ladder in the momentum lattice platform. By inducing multiple two- and four-photon Bragg scatterings among specific momentum states, we achieved a flat band system based on the diamond model, precisely controlling the coupling strength and phase between individual lattice sites. Utilizing two lattice sites couplings, we generated a compact localized state associated with the flat band, which remained localized throughout the entire time evolution. We successfully realized the continuous shift of flat bands by adjusting the corresponding nearest neighbor hopping strength, enabling us to observe the complete localization process. This opens avenues for further exploration of more complex properties within flat-band systems, including investigating the robustness of flat-band localized states in disordered flat-band systems and exploring many-body localization in interacting flat-band systems.

Effects of interaction on the diffusion of atomic matter waves in one-dimensional quasiperiodic potentials

Marco Larcher, F. Dalfovo, Michele Modugno

We study the behavior of an ultracold atomic gas of bosons in a bichromatic lattice, where the weaker lattice is used as a source of disorder. We numerically solve a discretized mean-field equation, which generalizes the one-dimensional Aubry-Andr\`e model for particles in a quasiperiodic potential by including the interaction between atoms. We compare the results for commensurate and incommensurate lattices. We investigate the role of the initial shape of the wave packet as well as the interplay between two competing effects of the interaction, namely, self-trapping and delocalization. Our calculations show that, if the condensate initially occupies a single lattice site, the dynamics of the interacting gas is dominated by self-trapping in a wide range of parameters even for weak interaction. Conversely, if the diffusion starts from a Gaussian wave packet, self-trapping is significantly suppressed and the destruction of localization by interaction is more easily observable.

Incommensurate many-body localization in the presence of long-range hopping and single-particle mobility edge

Ke Huang, DinhDuy Vu, Xiao Li +1 more

We study many-body localization (MBL) in the quasiperiodic ${t}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}_{2}$ model, focusing on the role of next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping ${t}_{2}$, which introduces a single-particle mobility edge. The calculated phase diagram can be divided into three distinct regimes, depending on the strength of the short-range interaction $U$. For weak interactions ($U\ensuremath{\ll}{t}_{1}$), this model is always nonthermal. For intermediate interactions ($U\ensuremath{\sim}{t}_{1}$), the thermal-MBL phase transition in this model is qualitatively the same as that of the Aubry-Andre (AA) model, which is consistent with existing experimental observations. For strong interactions $(U\ensuremath{\gg}{t}_{1})$, the NNN hopping produces qualitatively new physics because it breaks down the Hilbert space fragmentation present in the AA model. The NNN hopping is thus irrelevant when the interaction is intermediate but relevant for strong interactions.
