Abstract

Defects in frustrated antiferromagnetic spin chains are universally present in geometrically frustrated systems. We consider the defects of the one-dimensional, spin-$s$ XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy on a periodic chain with $N$ sites that was famously studied by Haldane. For $N$ odd, the antiferromagnetic model is frustrated, and the ground state must include a soliton defect. We consider the Heisenberg interaction perturbatively and determine the corresponding perturbative solitonic ground state. Then we compute the entanglement spectrum, entanglement entropy (EE), capacity of entanglement (CE), and spin correlations in the solitonic ground state. For weak frustration, we find an algebraic violation of the area law for the EE consistent with recent results on weakly frustrated chains. Our analysis then moves beyond the weak frustration regime, and we obtain a novel extensive scaling law for the EE when strong frustration prevails, signaling large entanglement, and failure of the quasiparticle interpretation in this regime. Enhanced frustration results in less total correlations but relatively more nonlocal correlations.

The frustration of being odd: universal area law violation in local systems

S. M. Giampaolo, Flavia Brága Ramos, Fabio Franchini

Abstract At the core of every frustrated system, one can identify the existence of frustrated rings that are usually interpreted in terms of single–particle physics. We check this point of view through a careful analysis of the entanglement entropy of both models that admit an exact single–particle decomposition of their Hilbert space due to integrability and those for which the latter is supposed to hold only as a low energy approximation. In particular, we study generic spin chains made by an odd number of sites with short-range antiferromagnetic interactions and periodic boundary conditions, thus characterized by a weak , i.e. nonextensive, frustration. While for distances of the order of the correlation length the phenomenology of these chains is similar to that of the non-frustrated cases, we find that correlation functions involving a number of sites scaling like the system size follow different rules. We quantify the long-range correlations through the von Neumann entanglement entropy, finding that indeed it violates the area law, while not diverging with the system size. This behavior is well fitted by a universal law that we derive from the conjectured single–particle picture.

The spin- 1/2 Heisenberg star with frustration: numerical versus exact results

Johannes Richter, A Voigt

We study a spin- 1/2 Heisenberg model H=J 1 Sigma i=2 N S 1 S i +J 2 Sigma i=2 N S i S i+1 ; J 1 , J 2 >or=0 (Heisenberg star) which may be considered either as an essential structure element of a lattice with frustration or, alternatively, as an antiferromagnetic linear chain with a perturbation. We discuss general relations for the energy eigenvalues, the eigenstates as well as the spin correlation of the system in dependence on J 2 /J 1 . The correlation function (S 1 S i ) scales with 1/Z, where Z =N-1 is the number of nearest neighbours i of the central spin 1. In the mean-field limit (Z to infinity ) (S 1 S i ) goes to -0.25 for small J 2 /J 1 , but vanishes for strong frustration J 2 /J 1 . Adding exact numerical results for N=5, 7, ..., 23 we discuss the ground-state phase diagram, in particular, the ground-state spin correlations versus J 2 /J 1 . Analysing the spin correlation of frustrated and non-frustrated stars we suggest an upper bound -0.25 for the ground-state correlator (S i S j )0 of two antiferromagnetically interacting spins i and j in a non-frustrated Heisenberg spin- 1/2 antiferromagnet. We argue that any measured nearest-neighbour spin correlation (S i S j )0 larger than this bound indicates of frustration in quantum spin Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

A dimerized and frustrated spin model with alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchanges: investigating quantum phases of Heisenberg spin chains with s = 1/2 and 1

Shaon Sahoo, V. M. L. Durga Prasad Goli, Diptiman Sen +1 more

We study Heisenberg spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains with alternating ferromagnetic ($J_1^F$) and antiferromagnetic ($J_1^A$) nearest-neighbor interactions and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_2^F$). In this model frustration is induced by the non-zero $J_2^F$ and the effect of dimerization is realized by changing the strength of $J_1^A$ for a fixed value of $J_1^F$. The model with site spin $s$ behaves like a Haldane spin chain with site spin 2$s$ in the limit of vanishing $J_2^F$ and large $J_1^F/J_1^A$. We show that the exact ground state of the model can be found along a line in the parameter space. The phase diagram in the space of $J_1^A-J_2^F$ is determined using numerical techniques complemented by some analytical calculations. A number of quantities, including the ground state spin, energy gap, structure factor, entanglement entropy, and zero temperature magnetization, are studied to understand the complete phase diagram. An interesting and application-wise important feature of this model is that it exhibits a macroscopic magnetization jump in the presence of a magnetic field; we study this using an effective Hamiltonian.

We study Heisenberg spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains with alternating ferromagnetic (J(1)(F)) and antiferromagnetic (J(1)(A)) nearest-neighbor interactions and a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction (J(2)(F)). In this model frustration is present due to the non-zero J(2)(F). The model with site spin s behaves like a Haldane spin chain, with site spin 2s in the limit of vanishing J(2)(F) and large J(1)(F)/J(1)(A). We show that the exact ground state of the model can be found along a line in the parameter space. For fixed J(1)(F), the phase diagram in the space of J(1)(A)-J(2)(F) is determined using numerical techniques complemented by analytical calculations. A number of quantities, including the structure factor, energy gap, entanglement entropy and zero temperature magnetization, are studied to understand the complete phase diagram. Proposal for Verification of the Haldane Phase Using Trapped Ions

I. Cohen, Alex Retzker

A proposal to use trapped ions to implement spin-one XXZ antiferromagnetic chains as an experimental tool to explore the Haldane phase is presented. We explain how to reach the Haldane phase adiabatically, demonstrate the robustness of the ground states to noise in the magnetic field and Rabi frequencies, and propose a way to detect them using their characteristics: an excitation gap and exponentially decaying correlations, a nonvanishing nonlocal string order, and a double degenerate entanglement spectrum. Scaling up to higher dimensions and more frustrated lattices, we obtain richer phase diagrams, and we can reach spin liquid phase, which can be detected by its entanglement entropy which obeys the boundary law.
