Full counting statistics and coherences: Fluctuation symmetry in heat transport with the unified quantum master equation

Abstract

Recently, a "unified" quantum master equation was derived and shown to be of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan form. This equation describes the dynamics of open quantum systems in a manner that forgoes the full secular approximation and retains the impact of coherences between eigenstates close in energy. We implement full counting statistics with the unified quantum master equation to investigate the statistics of energy currents through open quantum systems with nearly degenerate levels. We show that, in general, this equation gives rise to dynamics that satisfy fluctuation symmetry, a sufficient condition for the Second Law of Thermodynamics at the level of average fluxes. For systems with nearly degenerate energy levels, such that coherences build up, the unified equation is simultaneously thermodynamically consistent and more accurate than the fully secular master equation. We exemplify our results for a "V" system facilitating energy transport between two thermal baths at different temperatures. We compare the statistics of steady-state heat currents through this system as predicted by the unified equation to those given by the Redfield equation, which is less approximate but, in general, not thermodynamically consistent. We also compare results to the secular equation, where coherences are entirely abandoned. We find that maintaining coherences between nearly degenerate levels is essential to properly capture the current and its cumulants. On the other hand, the relative fluctuations of the heat current, which embody the thermodynamic uncertainty relation, display inconsequential dependence on quantum coherences.

Thermodynamic consistency of quantum master equations

Ariane Soret, Vasco Cavina, Massimiliano Esposito

Starting from a microscopic system-baths description, we derive the general conditions for a time-local quantum master equation (QME) to satisfy the first and second laws of thermodynamics at the fluctuating level. Using counting statistics, we show that the fluctuating second law can be rephrased as a generalized quantum detailed balance condition (GQDB), i.e., a symmetry of the time-local generators which ensures the validity of the fluctuation theorem. When requiring in addition a strict system-bath energy conservation, the GQDB reduces to the usual notion of detailed balance which characterizes QMEs with Gibbsian steady states. However, if energy conservation is only required on average, QMEs with non-Gibbsian steady states can still maintain a certain level of thermodynamic consistency. Applying our theory to commonly used QMEs, we show that the Redfield equation breaks the GQDB, and that some recently derived approximation schemes based on the Redfield equation (which hold beyond the secular approximation and allow one to derive a QME of Lindblad form) satisfy the GQDB and the average first law. We find that performing the secular approximation is the only way to ensure the first and second laws at the fluctuating level.

Unified GKLS quantum master equation beyond the secular approximation

Anton Sergeevich Trushechkin

Derivation of a quantum master equation for a system weakly coupled to a bath which takes into account non-secular effects, but, nevertheless, has the mathematically correct Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) form (in particular, preserves positivity of the density operator) and also satisfies the standard thermodynamic properties is a known long-standing problem in theory of open quantum systems. The non-secular terms are important when some energy levels of the system or their differences (Bohr frequencies) are nearly degenerate. We provide a fully rigorous derivation of such equation based on a formalization of the weak-coupling limit for the general case.

Thermodynamics of the Coarse-Graining Master Equation

Gernot Schaller, Julian Ablaßmayer

We study the coarse-graining approach to derive a generator for the evolution of an open quantum system over a finite time interval. The approach does not require a secular approximation but nevertheless generally leads to a Lindblad-Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan generator. By combining the formalism with full counting statistics, we can demonstrate a consistent thermodynamic framework, once the switching work required for the coupling and decoupling with the reservoir is included. Particularly, we can write the second law in standard form, with the only difference that heat currents must be defined with respect to the reservoir. We exemplify our findings with simple but pedagogical examples.

Quantum energy exchange and refrigeration: a full-counting statistics approach

Hava Meira Friedman, Bijay Kumar Agarwalla, Dvira Segal

We formulate a full-counting statistics description to study energy exchange in multi-terminal junctions. Our approach applies to quantum systems that are coupled either additively or non-additively (cooperatively) to multiple reservoirs. We derive a Markovian Redfield-type equation for the counting-field dependent reduced density operator. Under the secular approximation, we confirm that the cumulant generating function satisfies the heat exchange fluctuation theorem. Our treatment thus respects the second law of thermodynamics. We exemplify our formalism on a multi-terminal two-level quantum system, and apply it to realize the smallest quantum absorption refrigerator, operating through engineered reservoirs, and achievable only through a cooperative bath interaction model.

Heat transport in driven quantum systems: Comparison between the Floquet-Redfield equation and the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis

Luca Magazzù, Christoforus Dimas Satrya, Aleksandr S. Strelnikov +2 more

We provide a comprehensive study of heat transport in periodically driven quantum systems using a master equation approach in the Floquet basis. Starting from the exact, formal expressions, we obtain, within the weak coupling regime of system-bath coupling, a generalized Floquet-Redfield master equation which does not involve Markovian or secular approximations and the corresponding formula for the heat current. From this approach we derive the standard, full secular master equation. Moreover, we present a master equation for the driven spin-boson model in the instantaneous eigenbasis. The different approaches are compared by applying them to the steady-state heat transport in the driven spin-boson model. An analytical solution is provided for the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis which reproduces the numerics and explains the features of the heat current as a function of the drive parameters.
