Abstract

Abstract We study the nonequilibrium dynamic behaviors in a driven-dissipative single-atom cavity electromagnetically induced transparency. The optical bistability and multistability beyond a Kerr nonlinearity are observed utilizing the optical Stark shift induced strong nonlinearity. We show that the nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition between bistability and multistability is highly tunable by the system parameters in a large parameter region. The first-order dissipative optical bistability (multistability) always corresponds to the photon-bunching quantum statistics, which indicates that the quantum fluctuations and correlations play important roles in nonequilibrium dynamics. Interestingly, bistability and multistability with photon-bunching quantum statistics occurring at extremely low steady-state cavity photon number are observed, even under a very strong cavity driven field. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the unique cavity steady-state solution of the full quantum calculation is excellently consistent with the lowest solution based on the semiclassical mean-field approach in bistability and multistability regimes when the cavity photon number is much less than unity, albeit these nonclassical quantum states should possess strong quantum fluctuations in this parameter regime. Our results pave the way to exploring nonclassical correlated optical multistability in quantum regime, which may bring exciting opportunities for potential applications from quantum information processing to quantum metrology.

Photon statistics of a single-atom intracavity system involving electromagnetically induced transparency

S. Rebić, A. S. Parkins, S. M. Tan

We explore the photon statistics of light emitted from a system comprising a single four-level atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity mode that is driven by a coherent laser field. In the weak driving regime this system is found to exhibit a photon blockade effect. For intermediate driving strengths we find a sudden change in the photon statistics of the light emitted from the cavity. Photon antibunching switches to photon bunching over a very narrow range of intracavity photon number. It is proven that this sudden change in photon statistics occurs due to the existence of robust quantum interference of transitions between the dressed states of the atom-cavity system. Furthermore, it is shown that the strong photon bunching is a nonclassical effect for certain values of driving field strength, violating classical inequalities for field correlations.

Investigating the impact of correlated white noises on the bistability behavior in an optical three-level bistable system

Tayebeh Naseri, Rasoul Sadighi‐Bonabi

The effect of correlated white noises on the optical bistability behavior of three-level atomic systems is theoretically investigated. Noise-induced bistability is demonstrated in an atomic optical bistable system consisting of three-level atoms in Λ-type configurations confined in an optical ring cavity. The output field as a result of enhanced Kerr nonlinearity induced by atomic coherence in the electromagnetically induced transparency system is variable due to the noises in laser parameters and the cooperativity parameter. Therefore, noise is mainly responsible for such induced bistability in the system. It is found that with the cross-correlation noises, the hysteresis loop of optical bistability can be clearly expanded in comparison with the deterministic case and the atomic system could show multistability behavior. This is specifically considerable for positive cross-correlated noises where it could expand the domain of the hysteresis loop. In the presented atomic system the numerical result shows that noise can induce bistability in the absence of spontaneously generated coherence. Furthermore, it is salient that the noise could induce bistability when the system is below its deterministic threshold for bistability.

Low-lying bifurcations in cavity quantum electrodynamics

Michael A. Armen, Hideo Mabuchi

The interplay of quantum fluctuations with nonlinear dynamics is a central topic in the study of open quantum systems, connected to fundamental issues (such as decoherence and the quantum-classical transition) and practical applications (such as coherent information processing and the development of mesoscopic sensors and amplifiers). With this context in mind, we here present a computational study of some elementary bifurcations that occur in a driven and damped cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) model at low intracavity photon number. In particular, we utilize the single-atom cavity QED master equation and associated stochastic Schr\"odinger equations to characterize the equilibrium distribution and dynamical behavior of the quantized intracavity optical field in parameter regimes near points in the semiclassical (mean-field, Maxwell-Bloch) bifurcation set. Our numerical results show that the semiclassical limit sets are qualitatively preserved in the quantum stationary states, although quantum fluctuations apparently induce phase diffusion within periodic orbits and stochastic transitions between attractors. We restrict our attention to an experimentally realistic parameter regime.

Photon avalanche triggered by a single photon in a bistable nonlinear optical cavity

Asian Selvakumaran, Anna Minguzzi, Iacopo Carusotto +1 more

We theoretically investigate the response of a coherently-driven nonlinear optical cavity to an additional incident single photon. Using a quantum description of the nonlinear dynamics that fully accounts for the quantum fluctuations of the cavity field and for the discrete nature of the incident photon, we characterize the quantum dynamics of single-photon-stimulated jumps from the low-photon-number to the high-photon-number state of the optical bistability loop. We find that the system can exhibit a giant response to this single quantum of excitation, rooted in the phase-transition picture of optical bistability. In addition to shedding light on the role of quantum fluctuations in the non-equilibrium dynamics of a nonlinear optical cavity, our results suggest a strategy for an all-optical single-photon avalanche detector.

Dynamics of atom-field interaction inside a nonlinear Kerr-like medium filled optical cavity

Naveen Kumar, Arpita Chatterjee

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of two two-level atoms interacting with a two-mode field inside an optical cavity, in presence of a nonlinear Kerr-like medium as well as the Stark shift. We derive the exact analytical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation that provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing the system's quantum properties. To characterize the nonclassical features of the radiation field, we examine photon number distribution, second-order correlation function 𝑔2⁡(0), squeezing properties, and Mandel's 𝑄𝑀 parameter. These properties reveal significant insights into the quantum statistical behaviour of the field and its deviation from classicality under different interaction regimes. In addition, we quantify the atom-atom entanglement using linear entropy which captures the mixedness of the atomic subsystem and elucidates the interplay between atom-atom interactions. The results highlight the crucial role of nonlinear interactions and the Stark shift in shaping the quantum correlations and nonclassical phenomena of the system.

Tunable photon blockade with a single atom in a cavity under electromagnetically induced transparency

Jing Tang, Yuangang Deng, Chaohong Lee

We present an experimental proposal to achieve a strong photon blockade by employing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with a single alkaline-earth-metal atom trapped in an optical cavity. In the presence of optical Stark shift, both the second-order correlation function and cavity transmission exhibit asymmetric structures between the red and blue sidebands of the cavity. For a weak control field, the photon quantum statistics for the coherent transparency window (i.e., atomic quasi-dark-state resonance) are insensitive to the Stark shift, which should also be immune to the spontaneous emission of the excited state by taking advantage of the intrinsic dark-state polariton of EIT. Interestingly, by exploiting the interplay between the Stark shift and control field, the strong photon blockade at atomic quasi-dark-state resonance has an optimal second-order correlation function g ( 2 ) ( 0 ) ∼ 10 − 4 and a high cavity transmission simultaneously. The underlying physical mechanism is ascribed to the Stark shift enhanced spectrum anharmonicity and the EIT hosted strong nonlinearity with loss-insensitive atomic quasi-dark-state resonance, which is essentially different from the conventional proposal with emerging Kerr nonlinearity in cavity-EIT. Our results reveal a new strategy to realize high-quality single photon sources, which could open up a new avenue for engineering nonclassical quantum states in cavity quantum electrodynamics.
