Superconductivity in a system of interacting spinful semions

Abstract

Noninteracting particles obeying certain fractional statistics have been predicted to exhibit superconductivity. We discuss the issue in an attractively interacting system of spinful semions on a lattice by numerically investigating the presence of off-diagonal long-range order at zero temperature. For this purpose we construct a Hubbard model wherein two semions with opposite spin can virtually coincide while maintaining consistency with the fractional braiding statistics. Clear off-diagonal long-range order is seen in the strong coupling limit, consistent with the expectation that a pair of semions obeys Bose statistics. We find that the semion system behaves similarly to a system of fermions with the same attractive Hubbard $U$ interaction for a wide range of $U$, suggesting that semions also undergo a BCS to BEC crossover as a function of $U$.

Fermions with attractive interactions on optical lattices and implications for correlated systems

Chih-Chun Chien, Qijin Chen, Kathryn Levin

In this paper we address the behavior of the superfluid transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ in the attractive Hubbard model. The attractive Hubbard model can be regarded as the generalization of the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover to a lattice and, as such, may have implications for future optical lattice studies. Nevertheless, the BEC limit of the Hubbard model is very different from that of the better-studied Fermi gases, owing to the strong intersite repulsion between pairs. Here we address systematically the effects of pairing fluctuations for all filling fractions over the entire range of attractive interaction strength. A central conclusion of our work is that in a lattice, around half filling, the smooth evolution from the BCS to the BEC limits is interrupted: ${T}_{c}$ vanishes when the system approaches the bosonic regime with increasing interaction strength. We suggest that this interruption of crossover may signal a quantum critical transition to another form of superfluid not continuously connected to a BCS-like phase. A simple variational ansatz for an alternate ground state in this more strongly coupled superfluid is presented. A generalization of the ($s$-wave) Hubbard model to $d$-wave pairing allows us to address issues of relevance to high-${T}_{c}$ superconductivity. The phase diagram (representing the pairing or pseudogap onset temperature ${T}^{*}$ and ${T}_{c}$) shows that here too one observes a vanishing of ${T}_{c}$ when ${T}^{*}$ becomes sufficiently large. Given this predicted breakdown of the crossover, and given the striking similarity to features of the cuprate phase diagram, we suggest that future experiments on ultracold fermions in optical lattices should not be exclusively limited to the repulsive Hubbard model, but should address the attractive model in order to elucidate features of high-temperature superconductivity.

Off-diagonal long-range order in Laughlin’s states for particles obeying fractional statistics

Jainendra K. Jain, N. Read

Laughlin has proposed mean-field wave functions for particles obeying (1-1/J) fractional statistics where J is an integer. We demonstrate off-diagonal long-range order in these wave functions, which is closely related to the off-diagonal long-range order in the electronic wave functions corresponding to J completely filled Landau levels. The presence of off-diagonal long-range order signifies Bose condensation of bosonlike multiplets containing J particles. For J=2, which may be relevant to high-temperature superconductivity, our result implies Cooper pairing in Laughlin's wave function for half-fermions.

Density-induced BCS to Bose-Einstein crossover

Natascia Andrenacci, Andrea Perali, P. Pieri +1 more

We investigate the zero-temperature BCS to Bose-Einstein crossover at the mean-field level, by driving it with the attractive potential and the particle density. We emphasize specifically the role played by the particle density in this crossover. Three different interparticle potentials are considered for the continuum model in three spatial dimensions, while both s- and d-wave solutions are analyzed for the attractive (extended) Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice. For this model the peculiar behavior of the crossover for the d-wave solution is discussed. In particular, in the strong-coupling limit when approaching half-filling we evidence the occurrence of strong correlations among antiparallel-spin fermions belonging to different composite bosons, which give rise to a quasi-long-range antiferromagnetic order in this limit.

Superconducting ground state in a model with bond-charge interaction

Marco Airoldi, Alberto Parola

An electronic Hubbard-type model with bond-charge interaction and on-site repulsion U is studied in one and two dimensions. Evidence is provided in favor of superconductivity, without phase separation, for U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$(n), although no explicit attraction between particles is present in the Hamiltonian. The presence of a bound state for two particles in vacuum in D=1 and 2 (but not for D=3) suggests that, at low density and low dimensionality, superconductivity is due to condensation of preexistent pairs (dimers). The one-dimensional (1D) phase diagram is studied analytically as well as numerically and shows a transiiton between a Luttinger liquid and a strong-coupling phase with diverging superconducting susceptibility. Estimates of critical exponents are given at low density and at quarter filling for several values of the parameters. The 2D model at quarter filling is analyzed by Lanczos diagonalization on a 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 cluster. The numerical results are consistent with the phase diagram obtained by BCS mean-field theory and is qualitatively similar to the 1D case: a ground state with spin gap and off-diagonal long-range order at U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$(n); and a Fermi liquid above ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ with no sign of phase separation.

Gutzwiller-Type Projected BCS Ground States for Attractive Hubbard Model in Infinite Dimensions

Y. Y. Suzuki, Shinichi Saito, Susumu Kurihara

In order to develop our theoretical understanding of the superconducting state of strongly correlated electron systems, we investigate the many-body ground state of the attractive Hubbard model in infinite dimensions using the Gutzwiller-type projected BCS variational (GBCS) wave function. We first calculate various physical quantities by numerically evaluating analytical equations for systems in the thermodynamic limit. We then show that the GBCS wave function has the lowest energy when the gap parameter has a mixture of s wave and extended s wave pairing symmetry and that the ground state energy of the GBCS is lower than that of either the BCS or Fermi liquid at any electron density and any strength of the attractive interactions in our model. We also show that with infinite strength interactions, each pair of electrons with opposite spins forms a tightly bound pair on a lattice site (BEC-like state). We find a smooth crossover from a BCS-like state with large, overlapping Cooper pairs (for weakly attractive interactions) to a BEC-like state of composite bosons formed out of the tightly bound pairs of fermions (for strongly attractive interactions).

Pairing order and condensate fraction across the BCS-BEC crossover in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Hao Du, Qian Sun, Zhuotao Xie +1 more

We report a systematic study of the superconducting ground state in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model, employing the {\it numerically exact} auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method. We focus primarily on the pairing order and condensate fraction across the BCS-BEC crossover. Our numerical calculations cover a broad and physically relevant parameter regime, with the interaction strength $U/t=2\sim 12$ (where $t$ is the nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude) and fermion density $n=0.25\sim 1.0$. We systematically characterize the dependence of the pairing order and condensate fraction on both the interaction strength and fermion density, and perform finite-size extrapolations to obtain their thermodynamic-limit values. As complementary quantities, we also provide high-precision numerical results for the double occupancy and total energy. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of next-nearest-neighbor hopping on the superconducting properties of the model. Our results offer a comprehensive set of unbiased numerical data for the attractive Hubbard model, establishing quantitative benchmarks for understanding superconductivity across the BCS-BEC crossover and for validating future theoretical and numerical approaches.
