Measurement-induced phase transition in teleportation and wormholes

Abstract

We demonstrate that some quantum teleportation protocols exhibit measurement induced phase transitions in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. Namely, Kitaev-Yoshida and Gao-Jafferis-Wall protocols have a phase transition if we apply them at a large projection rate or at a large coupling rate respectively. It is well-known that at small rates they allow teleportation to happen only within a small time-window. We show that at large rates, the system goes into a new steady state, where the teleportation can be performed at any moment. In dual Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity these phase transitions correspond to the formation of an eternal traversable wormhole. In the Kitaev-Yoshida case this novel type of wormhole is supported by continuous projections.

Holographic measurement and quantum teleportation in the SYK thermofield double

Stefano Antonini, Brianna Grado-White, Shao-Kai Jian +1 more

Abstract According to holography, entanglement is the building block of spacetime; therefore, drastic changes of entanglement will lead to interesting transitions in the dual spacetime. In this paper, we study the effect of projective measurements on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model’s thermofield double state, dual to an eternal black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We calculate the (Renyi-2) mutual information between the two copies of the SYK model upon projective measurement of a subset of fermions in one copy. We propose a dual JT gravity model that can account for the change of entanglement due to measurement, and observe an entanglement wedge phase transition in the von Neumann entropy. The entanglement wedge for the unmeasured side changes from the region outside the horizon to include the entire time reversal invariant slice of the two-sided geometry as the number of measured Majorana fermions increases. Therefore, after the transition, the bulk information stored in the measured subsystem is not entirely lost upon projection in one copy of the SYK model, but rather teleported to the other copy. We further propose a decoding protocol to elucidate the teleportation interpretation, and connect our analysis to the physics of traversable wormholes.

Long-range wormhole teleportation

Joseph Lykken, Daniel Jafferis, Alexander Zlokapa +4 more

We extend the protocol of Gao and Jafferis arXiv:1911.07416 to allow wormhole teleportation between two entangled copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model communicating only through a classical channel. We demonstrate in finite $N$ simulations that the protocol exhibits the characteristic holographic features of wormhole teleportation discussed and summarized in Jafferis et al. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05424-3 . We review and exhibit in detail how these holographic features relate to size winding which, as first shown by Brown et al. arXiv:1911.06314 and Nezami et al. arXiv:2102.01064, encodes a dual description of wormhole teleportation.

Traversability dynamics of minimal Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Wormhole-inspired teleportation protocol with a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric non-Hermitian deformation

Sudhanva Joshi, Sunil Kumar Mishra

Holography-inspired teleportation has recently emerged as a significant area of research in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we investigate the effects of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-unitary deformations on the traversability of the wormhole-inspired teleportation protocol modeled by coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev systems prepared in a Thermofield Double state bath. By introducing balanced gain and loss terms to the boundary Hamiltonians, we identify a phase transition driven by spectral exceptional points, where the real energy eigenvalues of the effective Hamiltonian coalesce and bifurcate into complex conjugate pairs. We demonstrate that the $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phase acts as an amplifier, enabling exponential growth in the norm of the teleported signal while preserving the causal time window for the wormhole's traversability. A statistical study of disorder realizations reveals that the critical non-Hermiticity threshold $γ_c$ follows a log-normal distribution, reflecting the sensitivity of the transition to the microscopic level spacing of the chaotic SYK spectrum. Furthermore, we observe a ``Purification" effect deep in the broken phase, where the teleportation channel acts as an entanglement distiller, yielding near-perfect teleportation fidelity for post-selected states. Our results suggest that the non-Hermitian topology can be harnessed to enhance holographic quantum communication, providing a robust mechanism for signal amplification in noisy, minimal quantum many-body systems.

A numerical study of measurement-induced phase transitions in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Stav Haldar, Anthony J. Brady

Continuous monitoring of an otherwise closed quantum system has been found to lead to a measurement-induced phase transition (MIPT) characterized by abrupt changes in the entanglement or purity of the many-body quantum state. For an entanglement MIPT, entangling dynamics compete with measurement dynamics, pushing the system either to a phase with extensive entanglement or to a phase with low-level entanglement. For purification MIPTs, projective measurements effectively cool and localize the system, inducing a transition from a mixed state to an uncorrelated pure state. In this work, we numerically simulate monitored dynamics in the all-to-all Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model for finite N. We witness both entanglement and purification MIPTs in the steady-state. It is often said that there is an equivalence between entanglement and purification MIPTs, however we provide numerical evidence to the contrary, implying that entanglement and purification MIPTs are indeed two distinct phenomena. The reason for such a distinction is quite simple: entanglement can revive after a completely projective measurement -- if measurements do not occur too often in time -- but impurity cannot.

Quantum teleportation through time-shifted AdS wormholes

Rik van Breukelen, Kyriakos Papadodimas

Abstract Based on the work of Gao-Jafferis-Wall and Maldacena-Stanford-Yang, we observe that the time-shifted thermofield states of two entangled CFTs can be made traversable by an appropriate coupling of the two CFTs, or alternatively by the application of a modified quantum teleportation protocol. This provides evidence for the smoothness of the horizon for a large class of entangled states related to the thermofield by time-translations. The smoothness of these states has some relevance for the firewall paradox and the proposal that some observables in quantum gravity may be state-dependent. We notice that quantum teleportation through these entangled states could be used in a laboratory setup to implement a “time-machine”, which allows the observer to travel far in the future.

Fidelity of wormhole teleportation in finite-qubit systems

Zeyu Liu, Pengfei Zhang

A bstract The rapid development of quantum science and technology is leading us into an era where quantum many-body systems can be comprehended through quantum simulations. Holographic duality, which states gravity and spacetime can emerge from strongly interacting systems, then offers a natural avenue for the experimental study of gravity physics without delving into experimentally infeasible high energies. A prominent example is the simulation of traversable wormholes through the wormhole teleportation protocol, attracting both theoretical and experimental attention. In this work, we develop the theoretical framework for computing the fidelity of wormhole teleportation in N -qubit systems with all-to-all interactions, quantified by mutual information and entanglement negativity. The main technique is the scramblon effective theory, which captures universal out-of-time-order correlations in generic chaotic systems. We clarify that strong couplings between the two systems are essential for simulating the probe limit of semi-classical traversable wormholes using strongly interacting systems with near-maximal chaos. However, the teleportation signal diminishes rapidly when reducing the system size N , requiring a large number of qubits to observe a sharp signature of emergent geometry by simulating the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. This includes both the causal time-order of signals and the asymmetry of the teleportation signal for coupling with different signs. As a comparison, the teleportation signal increases when reducing N in weakly interacting systems. We also analyze the fidelity of the generalized encoding scheme in fermionic string operators.
