Abstract

Close to the demixing transition, the degree of freedom associated with relative density fluctuations of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is described by a nondissipative Landau-Lifshitz equation. In the quasi-one-dimensional weakly immiscible case, this mapping surprisingly predicts that a dark-bright soliton should oscillate when subject to a constant force favoring separation of the two components. We propose a realistic experimental implementation of this phenomenon which we interpret as a spin-Josephson effect in the presence of a movable barrier.

Magnetic solitons in an immiscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

Xiao Chai, Li You, Chandra Raman

We investigate magnetic solitons in an immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where the intraspecies interactions are slightly weaker than the interspecies interactions. While their density and phase profiles are analogous to dark-bright solitons, other characteristic properties such as maximum velocities, widths, total density depletions, and in-trap oscillations are different. In the low-velocity regime, a magnetic soliton reduces to a traveling pair of magnetic domain walls. Collisional behaviors of the solitons are also briefly discussed. We further demonstrate that these solitonic states can be realized in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 ferromagnetic BEC with a weak spin interaction, e.g., a $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ BEC.

Dynamical generation of dark-bright solitons through the domain wall of two immiscible Bose-Einstein condensates

María Arazo, M. Guilleumas, R. Mayol +1 more

We theoretically investigate the one-dimensional dynamics of a dark soliton in a two-component immiscible mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions. We analyze the reflection and transmission of a soliton when it propagates through the domain wall, and we show that a dark-bright soliton can be dynamically generated by the interaction of the dark soliton with the domain wall, outside the regime of parameters where stationary solutions are known to exist. The dynamics of this dark-bright soliton is harmoniclike, with a numerical frequency that is in good agreement with the predictions of a semianalytical model.

External Josephson effect in Bose-Einstein condensates with a spin degree of freedom

Sahel Ashhab, Carlos Lobo

We consider the Josephson effect between two spatially separated Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms each of which can be in two hyperfine states. We derive simple equations of motion for this system closely analogous to the Bloch equations. We also map the dynamics of the system onto those of a classical particle in a well. We find density and spin modes of oscillation and stable equilibrium points of the motion that are unstable in the spinless case. Finally we analyze the oscillation modes in the spin-1 $(F=1)$ case.

One-dimensional superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture: Mixing, demixing, and bright solitons

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Luca Salasnich

We study an ultracold and dilute superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a strictly one-dimensional (1D) atomic waveguide by using a set of coupled nonlinear mean-field equations obtained from the Lieb-Liniger energy density for bosons and the Gaudin-Yang energy density for fermions. We consider a finite Bose-Fermi interatomic strength ${g}_{bf}$ and both periodic and open boundary conditions. We find that with periodic boundary conditions---i.e., in a quasi-1D ring---a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is stable only with a large fermionic density. We predict that at small fermionic densities the ground state of the system displays demixing if ${g}_{bf}>0$ and may become a localized Bose-Fermi bright soliton for ${g}_{bf}<0$. Finally, we show, using variational and numerical solutions of the mean-field equations, that with open boundary conditions---i.e., in a quasi-1D cylinder---the Bose-Fermi bright soliton is the unique ground state of the system with a finite number of particles, which could exhibit a partial mixing-demixing transition. In this case the bright solitons are demonstrated to be dynamically stable. The experimental realization of these Bose-Fermi bright solitons seems possible with present setups.

Spin soliton with a negative-positive mass transition

Li-Chen Zhao, Wenlong Wang, Qinglin Tang +3 more

We obtain a striking spin soliton in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate and investigate its motions in the presence of a constant force. The initially static spin soliton first moves in a direction opposite to the force and then changes direction, showing an extraordinary ac oscillation. The underlying mechanism is uncovered: the spin soliton can exhibit a periodic transition between negative and positive inertial mass because of a particular relation between its energy and moving velocity. We then develop a quasiparticle model that can account for this extraordinary oscillation. Important implications and possible applications are discussed.

Self-adapted Josephson oscillation of dark-bright solitons under constant forces

Ling-Zheng Meng, Xi-Wang Luo, Li-Chen Zhao

We study the propagation of dark-bright solitons in two-component nonlinear systems with general nonlinear parameters, and explore how nonlinear interactions enrich the soliton dynamics giving rise to nonsinusoidal oscillations under constant forces. Treating the bright soliton as an effective barrier, we reveal that such oscillations are characterized by the Josephson equations with self-adapted critical current and bias voltage, whose explicit analytic expressions are derived using the Lagrangian variational method. The dynamical phase diagram in nonlinear parameter space is presented, identifying oscillation regions with different skewed sinusoidal dependence, and diffusion regions with irreversible soliton spreading due to instability of the barrier. Furthermore, we obtain periodic dispersion relations of the solitons, indicating a switch between positive and negative inertial masses, consistent with the oscillation behaviors. Our results provide a general and comprehensive theoretical framework for soliton oscillation dynamics and pave the way for investigating various nonlinear transports and their potential applications.
