We study the ground states of a 2D focusing non-linear Schrödinger equation with rotation and harmonic trapping. When the strength of the interaction approaches a critical value from below, the system collapses to a profile obtained from the optimizer of a Gagliardo-Nirenberg interpolation inequality. This was established before in the case of fixed rotation frequency. We extend the result to rotation frequencies approaching, or even equal to, the critical frequency at which the centrifugal force compensates the trap. We prove that the blow-up scenario is to leading order unaffected by such a strong deconfinement mechanism. In particular the blow-up profile remains independent of the rotation frequency.

We consider a system of
N interacting bosons in a rotating harmonic trap in
R2, where the two-body interaction is attractive and scaled as
N2αU(Nαx) with
0<α<1/12, and the three-body interaction is repulsive and scaled as
N4βW(Nβx,Nβy) with
0<β<1/24. In the mean-field limit, the ground state energy is effectively described by a rotating cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger functional. We analyze the collapse regime where the two-body coupling
a approaches the critical value
a∗ and the three-body coupling
b tends to zero. The NLS ground states blow up with a universal profile given by the optimizer of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality, and the energy satisfies
ENLS=(1−ζ/4+o(1))Qpotℓn2 with
ζ⩾0 determined by the relative rates of
an→a∗ and
bn↘0. From the many-body theory, we rigorously justify this effective description: the quantum ground state energy converges to the NLS energy with the same asymptotic expansion in the collapse regime, and the many-body ground states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation onto the universal blow-up profile.
We study harmonically trapped ultracold Bose gases with attractive interparticle interactions under external rotation in three spatial dimensions and determine the critical value of the attraction strength where the gas collapses as a function of the rotation frequency. To this end, we examine the stationary ground state in the corotating frame with a many-body approach as well as within the Gross-Pitaevskii theory of systems in traps with different anisotropies. In contrast to recently reported results [N. A. Jamaludin, N. G. Parker, and A. M. Martin, Phys. Rev. A 77, 051603(R) (2008)], we find that the collapse is not postponed in the presence of rotation. Unlike repulsive gases, the properties of the attractive system remain practically unchanged under rotation in isotropic and slightly anisotropic traps.
