Abstract

The paper is concerned with the Bose-Einstein condensate described by the attractive Gross-Pitaevskii equation in R 2 , where the external potential is unbounded from below. We show that when the interaction strength increases to a critical value, the Gross-Pitaevskii minimizer collapses to one singular point and we analyze the details of the collapse exactly up to the leading order.

We study the mechanisms of collapse of the condensate wave function in the Gross-Pitaevskii theory with attractive interparticle interaction. We reformulate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation as Newton's equations for a flux of particles, and introduce the collapsing fraction of particles. We assume that this collapsing fraction is expelled from the condensate due to dissipation. Using this hypothesis we analyze the dependence of the collapse behavior on the initial conditions. We find that, for a properly chosen negative scattering length, the remnant fraction of atoms becomes larger when the initial aspect ratio of the condensate is increased.

The dynamics of collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates.

This project aims to study the behavior of a cloud of Rubidium-85 atoms under an attractive interaction potential when used to create a Bose-Einstein condensate. Efforts to describe the dynamics of an attractive condensate using only the Gross-Pitaevskii equation have been unable to describe all of the features of such a system, and so the mathematical approach used is a perturbative method of corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A system of analytical equations to describe a condensate is derived herein, which is then arranged into a form suitable for numerical solution. The actual calculation is not performed, but details of the computational procedure are provided, as well as an analysis of the difficulties inherent in the calculation.

Collapse of the metastable state in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate

The characteristic features of the collapse of the ground state in trapped one-component attractive Bose-Einstein condensates are studied by applying the catastrophe theory. From numerically obtained stable and unstable solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we derive the catastrophe function defining the stability of the stationary points on the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. The bifurcation diagram and the universal scaling laws stemming from the catastrophe function show quantitative agreement with the numerical results.

Collapse and stable self-trapping for Bose-Einstein condensates with 1/rb -type attractive interatomic interaction potential

We consider dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range attractive interaction proportional to $1/{r}^{b}$ and arbitrary angular dependence. It is shown exactly that collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate without contact interactions is possible only for $b\ensuremath{\geqslant}2$. The case $b=2$ is critical and requires the number of particles to exceed a critical value to allow collapse. The critical collapse in that case is a strong one, trapping into the collapsing region a finite number of particles. The case $b>2$ is supercritical with an expected weak collapse which traps a rapidly decreasing number of particles during approach to collapse. For $b<2$ a singularity at $r=0$ is not strong enough to allow collapse but an attractive $1/{r}^{b}$ interaction admits stable self-trapping (a stable three-dimensional soliton solution) even in the absence of an external trapping potential.
