Abstract

In this paper, we present a rigorous analysis of symmetry and underlying physics of the nonlinear two-mode system driven by a harmonic mixing field, by means of multiple scale asymptotic analysis method. The effective description in the framework of the second-order perturbative theory provides an accurate picture for understanding the Floquet eigenspectrum and dynamical features of the nonlinear two-mode system, showing full agreement with the prediction of symmetry considerations. We find that two types of symmetries play significant role in the dynamical features of this model, the mechanism behind which can be interpreted in terms of the effective description. The results are of relevance for the phase control of the atomic localization in Bose-Einstein condensates or switch of the optical signals in nonlinear mediums.

Floquet-Engineered Nonlinearities and Controllable Pair-Hopping Processes: From Optical Kerr Cavities to Correlated Quantum Matter

Nathan Goldman, Oriana K. Diessel, Luca Barbiero +3 more

This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE).By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems-relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides, and Bose-Einstein condensates-where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture.Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements, and also leads to enhanced quantum properties such as spin squeezing. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes.Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents, and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly correlated quantum regime. Our general approach opens a route for the engineering of unconventional optical nonlinearities in photonic devices and controllable drive-induced interactions in ultracold quantum matter.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a shell: nonlinear modes and symmetry breaking

Alexander Wolf, Vladimir V. Konotop, Maxim A. Efremov

The state of a quantum particle confined to a spherical surface is commonly described using spherical harmonics, which play a crucial role in solving many scientific problems featuring spherical symmetry. A mean-field description of a system of many interacting quantum particles confined to a spherical shell naturally leads to nonlinear generalizations of spherical harmonics. In this study, we analyze the emergence of such nonlinear modes in a shell-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with both repulsive and attractive two-particle interactions. We find several classes of nonlinear modes. The first kind is an analytical continuation of a single spherical harmonic or their superposition for nonvanishing atom-atom interaction. Some of these solutions have planar counterparts in the form of Townes solitons and Townes vortices, which either appear stable even in the case of attractive interactions or can be stabilized by three-particle interactions. The second kind originate from symmetry-breaking bifurcations in the case of a repulsive interaction, and therefore have no linear counterparts. Moreover, we demonstrate the existence of a breathing dynamics that oscillates primarily between an unstable soliton and a stable vortex necklace state. Our findings show that the physics of nonlinear matter waves on curved geometries differs substantially from that in planar systems, suggesting the feasibility of observing these unconventional wave patterns experimentally.

Bose–Einstein condensates in the presence of a magnetic trap and optical lattice: two-mode approximation

Todd Kapitula, P. G. Kevrekidis

In this paper we study the solutions to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with harmonic and periodic potentials, motivated from the recent interest in these models as mean-field descriptions of Bose–Einstein condensates. We use a two-mode Galerkin approximation to study the dynamics of the full model. The phase plane and stability analysis of the reduced model yield very good agreement with the findings of the full partial differential equation. A particularly interesting finding of the stability analysis is a spontaneous symmetry breaking through a branching bifurcation, resulting in the stabilization of asymmetric states and the destabilization of symmetric or anti-symmetric ones. We also highlight the important differences between the cases of symmetric potentials and those of weakly asymmetric potentials.

Nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a driven double-well potential

Qiongtao Xie, Wenhua Hai

We investigate nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential subject to a high-frequency driving field. A multiple time scale method is used to obtain the nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies in both weak and strong nonlinearity regimes. It is shown that there are more nonlinear Floquet states without linear counterparts in the strong nonlinearity regime than in the weak nonlinearity regime, and they are phase-locked to an integer multiple of the external driving frequency. The validity of the effective description in the two different regimes is discussed. The stability criterion for these nonlinear Floquet states is found analytically and confirmed numerically.
