Modified entropies as the origin of generalized uncertainty principles

Abstract

The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is known to be connected to the entropic uncertainty principle. This correspondence is obtained employing a Gaussian probability distribution for wave functions associated to the Shannon entropy. Independently, due to quantum gravity effects the Heisenberg uncertainty principle has been extended to a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). In this work, we show that GUP has been derived from considering non-extensive entropies, proposed by one of us. We found that the deformation parameters associated with S+ and S− entropies are negative and positive respectively. This allows us to explore various possibilities in the search of physical implications. We conclude that non-extensive statistics constitutes a signature of quantum gravity.

Entropic uncertainty relation based on generalized uncertainty principle

Li-Yi Hsu, Shoichi Kawamoto, Wen-Yu Wen

We explore the modification of the entropic formulation of uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics which measures the incompatibility of measurements in terms of Shannon entropy. The deformation in question is the type so-called generalized uncertainty principle that is motivated by thought experiments in quantum gravity and string theory and is characterized by a parameter of Planck scale. The corrections are evaluated for small deformation parameters by use of the Gaussian wave function and numerical calculation. As the generalized uncertainty principle has proven to be useful in the study of the quantum nature of black holes, this study would be a step toward introducing an information theory viewpoint to black hole physics.

Shannon Entropy Quantum Entanglement Criterion and the Generalized Uncertainty Principle

Otto Charles Anthony Gadea, Gardo Blado

We examine quantum gravity effects by applying the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) to entropic uncertainty relation conditions on quantum entanglement. In particular, we study the GUP corrections to the Shannon entropic uncertainty condition for entanglement. As in an earlier paper [Blado, Herrera, Erwin arXiv:1706.10013 [quant-ph]] which dealt with variance relations, there is an increase in the upper bound for the entanglement condition upon the application of the generalized uncertainty principle. Fundamental concepts of the generalized uncertainty principle, entanglement and the entropic uncertainty relations are also discussed.

Quantum gravitational decoherence from Generalized Uncertainty Principle with stochastic deformation parameter.

Eissa Al-Nasrallah, Saurya Das, Fabrizio Illuminati +2 more

Several theories of quantum gravity propose the existence of a minimal measurable length and maximum measurable momentum near the Planck scale. When integrated into the framework of quantum mechanics, such restrictions lead to the generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which is commonly referred to as the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). The GUP has been applied to a plethora of physical models in order to provide further insights on our understanding of the Universe, both in the macroscopic and the microscopic regime. Nevertheless, the corrections related to GUP are expected to be extremely small, which thus renders experimental verification a difficult task. Therefore, phenomenological approaches on a qualitative level are typically addressed with the aim of enhancing our possibility of detecting these tiny effects. Motivated by a recent work on a universal decoherence mechanism stemming from the standard formulation of GUP, we extend the ideas contained therein by considering a more general form of GUP which includes linear and quadratic momentum terms to examine its implications. To achieve such a picture, we equip the deformation parameter appearing in front of all momentum terms with a stochastic nature, so that the effective decoherence mechanism emerges by taking the average over fluctuations. We find that, despite the apparently small differences among the two generalizations of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the consequences at the level of the universal decoherence mechanism they entail is significant, as they predict decoherence times that are completely uncorrelated and distinct.

Entropic Uncertainty Relations, Entanglement and Quantum Gravity Effects via the Generalised Uncertainty Principle

Otto Charles Anthony Gadea, Gardo Blado

We apply the generalised uncertainty principle (GUP) to the entropic uncertainty relation conditions on quantum entanglement. In particular, we study the GUP corrections to the Shannon entropic uncertainty condition for entanglement. We combine previous work on the Shannon entropy entanglement criterion for bipartite systems and the GUP corrections to the Shannon entropy for a single system to calculate the GUP correction for an entangled bipartite system. As in an earlier paper of the second author, which dealt with variance relations, it is shown that there is an increase in the upper bound for the entanglement condition upon the application of the generalised uncertainty principle. Necessary fundamental concepts of the generalised uncertainty principle, entanglement and the entropic uncertainty relations are also discussed. This paper puts together the concepts of entanglement, entropic uncertainty relations and the generalised uncertainty principle all of which have been separately discussed in pedagogical papers by Schroeder, Majernik et al., Blado et al. and Sprenger.

Generalized uncertainty principle from deformed angular momentum algebra

Ahmad Adel Abutaleb

This work establishes a link between deformed angular momentum operators and modifications of the quantum uncertainty principle. Starting from an algebra in which the standard angular momentum operators are deformed by two parameters, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], we construct the corresponding momentum operators via [Formula: see text] where the radial operator [Formula: see text] is determined by the requirement that the standard momentum operator is recovered in the limit [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]. The resulting commutation relations take the form [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is a position-dependent deformation matrix. This leads to an uncertainty relation [Formula: see text] which is state-dependent, anisotropic and position-dependent. We use the term Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) in its broad sense referring to any modification of the Heisenberg relation motivated by quantum-gravity ideas. However, the model does not yield a fixed minimal length of the kind familiar from conventional GUP models (e.g. [Formula: see text]). In the isotropic, limit the trace of the deformation matrix simplifies the bound to [Formula: see text] which can be considered as a rescaling of the uncertainty constant. Our work thus provides a geometric origin for modified uncertainty relations from symmetry breaking in the rotation group, and offers a framework in which quantum-gravity effects manifest themselves through state- and direction-dependent measurement limits, without necessarily introducing a universal minimal length.

Entropic Analysis of the Quantum Oscillator with a Minimal Length

David Puertas‐Centeno, M. Portesi

The well-known Heisenberg–Robertson uncertainty relation for a pair of noncommuting observables, is expressed in terms of the product of variances and the commutator among the operators, computed for the quantum state of a system. Different modified commutation relations have been considered in the last years with the purpose of taking into account the effect of quantum gravity. Indeed it can be seen that letting [ X , P ] = i ℏ ( 1 + β P 2 ) implies the existence of a minimal length proportional to β . The Bialynicki-Birula–Mycielski entropic uncertainty relation in terms of Shannon entropies is also seen to be deformed in the presence of a minimal length, corresponding to a strictly positive deformation parameter β . Generalized entropies can be implemented. Indeed, results for the sum of position and (auxiliary) momentum Rényi entropies with conjugated indices have been provided recently for the ground and first excited state. We present numerical findings for conjugated pairs of entropic indices, for the lowest lying levels of the deformed harmonic oscillator system in 1D, taking into account the position distribution for the wavefunction and the actual momentum.
