Abstract

Abstract Based on an exact formulation, we present a master equation approach to transport through Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Within the master equation treatment, the occupation dynamics of the regular fermion associated with the MZMs holds a quite different picture from the Bogoliubov–de Gennes (BdG) S-matrix scattering process, in which the ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ energy states are employed, while the master equation treatment does not involve them at all. Via careful analysis for the structure of the rates and the rate processes governed by the master equation, we reveal the intrinsic connection between both approaches. This connection enables us to better understand the confusing issue of teleportation when the Majorana coupling vanishes. We illustrate the behaviors of transient rates, occupation dynamics and currents. Through the bias voltage dependence, we also show the Markovian condition for the rates, which can extremely simplify the applications in practice. As future perspective, the master equation approach developed in this work can be applied to study important time-dependent phenomena such as photon-assisted tunneling through the MZMs and modulation effect of the Majorana coupling energy.

Exact master equation and non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of Majorana zero modes under gate-induced charge fluctuations

Hon-Lam Lai, Pei-Yun Yang, Yu-Wei Huang +1 more

In this paper, we use the exact master equation approach to investigate the decoherence dynamics of Majorana zero modes in the Kitaev model, a 1D $p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}$-wave spinless topological superconducting chain (TSC) that is disturbed by gate-induced charge fluctuations. The exact master equation is derived by extending Feynman-Vernon influence functional technique to fermionic open systems involving pairing excitations. We obtain the exact master equation for the zero-energy Bogoliubov quasiparticle (bogoliubon) in the TSC, and then transfer it into the master equation for the Majorana zero modes. Within this exact master equation formalism, we can describe in detail the non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of the zero-energy bogoliubon as well as Majorana zero modes under local perturbations. We find that at zero temperature, local charge fluctuations induce level broadening to one of the Majorana zero modes but there is an isolated peak (localized bound state) located at zero energy that partially protects the Majorana zero mode from decoherence. At finite temperatures, the zero-energy localized bound state does not precisely exist, but the coherence of the Majorana zero mode can still be partially but weakly protected, due to the sharp dip of the spectral density near the zero frequency. The decoherence will be enhanced as one increases the charge fluctuations and/or the temperature of the gate.

Cross correlation mediated by Majorana island with finite charging energy

Wei Feng, Lupei Qin, Xin-Qi Li

Abstract Based on the many-particle-number-state treatment for transport through a pair of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) which are coupled to the leads via two quantum dots, we identify that the reason for zero cross correlation of currents at uncoupling limit between the MZMs is from a degeneracy of the teleportation and the Andreev process channels. We then propose a scheme to eliminate the degeneracy by introducing finite charging energy on the Majorana island which allows for coexistence of the two channels. We find nonzero cross correlation established even in the Majorana uncoupling limit (and also in the small charging energy limit), which demonstrates well the teleportation or nonlocal nature of the MZMs. More specifically, the characteristic structure of coherent peaks in the power spectrum of the cross correlation is analyzed to identify the nonlocal and coherent coupling mechanism between the MZMs and the quantum dots. We also display the behaviors of peak shift with variation of the Majorana coupling energy, which can be realized by modulating parameters such as the magnetic field.

Decoherence of Majorana zero modes mediated by gapless fermions

Sauri Bhattacharyya, M. Grilli, Bernard van Heck

We study the decoherence of a collection of Majorana zero modes weakly coupled to a gapless reservoir of non-interacting fermions. Using the Born-Markov approximation, we derive a Lindblad master equation for the dissipative dynamics of the Majorana zero modes. Due to the long-range coupling between Majorana zero modes mediated by the gapless reservoir, the Lindblad jump operators are non-local linear combinations of the Majorana operators. We show that, as a consequence, the dissipative dynamics can exhibit long relaxation times, i.e. a slow decay of fermion parities. A spectral analysis of the Liouvillian shows that the slow-down is suppressed as a power law of the distance between Majorana zero modes. Finally, we validate the Lindblad equation by comparison with unbiased numerical simulations of the time evolution of the full density matrix. In particular, these illustrate that non-Markovian dynamics establishes non-local correlations at small times.

Master equation approach to transient quantum transport in nanostructures

Pei-Yun Yang, Wei-Min Zhang

In this review article, we present a non-equilibrium quantum transport theory for transient electron dynamics in nanodevices based on exact Master equation derived with the path integral method in the fermion coherent-state representation. Applying the exact Master equation to nanodevices, we also establish the connection of the reduced density matrix and the transient quantum transport current with the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The theory enables us to study transient quantum transport in nanostructures with back-reaction effects from the contacts, with non-Markovian dissipation and decoherence being fully taken into account. In applications, we utilize the theory to specific quantum transport systems, a variety of quantum decoherence and quantum transport phenomena involving the non-Markovian memory effect are investigated in both transient and stationary scenarios at arbitrary initial temperatures of the contacts.

Exact finite-time correlation functions for multiterminal setups: Connecting theoretical frameworks for quantum transport and thermodynamics

Gianmichele Blasi, Shishir Khandelwal, Géraldine Haack

Transport in open quantum systems can be explored through various theoretical frameworks, including the quantum master equation, scattering matrix, and Heisenberg equation of motion. The choice of framework depends on factors such as the presence of interactions, the coupling strength between the system and environment, and whether the focus is on steady-state or transient regimes. Existing literature mainly treats these frameworks independently. Our work establishes connections between them by clarifying the role and status of these approaches using two paradigmatic models for single and multipartite quantum systems in a two-terminal setup under voltage and temperature biases. We derive analytical solutions in both steady-state and transient regimes for the populations, currents, and current correlation functions. Exact results from the Heisenberg equation are shown to align with scattering matrix and master equation approaches within their respective validity regimes. Crucially, we establish a protocol for the weak-coupling limit, bridging the applicability of master equations at weak-coupling with Heisenberg or scattering matrix approaches at arbitrary coupling strength. Majorana zero modes and their bosonization

Victor Chua, Katharina Laubscher, Jelena Klinovaja +1 more

The simplest continuum model of a one-dimensional noninteracting superconducting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase is studied in great detail using analytical methods. In a first step, we present a full exact diagonalization of the fermionic Bogoliubov--de Gennes Hamiltonian for a system of finite length and with open boundaries. In particular, we derive exact analytical expressions for the Majorana zero modes emerging in the topologically nontrivial phase, revealing their spatial localization, their transformation properties under symmetry operations, and the exact finite-size energy splitting of the associated quasidegenerate ground states. We then proceed to analyze the model via exact operator bosonization in both open and closed geometries. In the closed wire geometry, we demonstrate fermion parity switching from twisting boundary conditions in the topologically nontrivial phase. For the open wire, on the other hand, we first take a semiclassical approach employing the Mathieu equation to study the two quasidegenerate ground states as well as their energy splitting at finite system sizes. We then finally derive the exact forms of the Majorana zero modes in the bosonic language using vertex-algebra techniques. These modes are verified to be in exact agreement with the results obtained from the fermionic description. The complementary viewpoints provided by the fermionic and bosonic formulations of the superconducting SPT phase are reconciled, allowing us to provide a complete and exact account of how Majorana zero modes manifest in a bosonized description of an SPT phase.
