Ising model in a boundary magnetic field with random discontinuities

Abstract

Abstract We consider a two-dimensional Ising field theory on a space with boundary in the presence of a piecewise constant boundary magnetic field which is allowed to change value discontinuously along the boundary. We assume zero magnetic field in the bulk. The positions of discontinuities are averaged over as in the annealed disorder. This model is described by a boundary field theory in which a superposition of the free spin boundary condition is perturbed by a collection of boundary condition changing operators. The corresponding boundary couplings give the allowed constant values of the magnetic field as well as the fugacities for the transitions between them. We show that when the value of the magnetic field is allowed to take only two different values which are the same in magnitude but have different signs the model can be described by a quadratic Lagrangian. We calculate and analyse the exact reflection matrix for this model. We also calculate the boundary entropy and study in detail the space of RG flows in a three-parameter space and with four different infrared fixed points. We discuss the likely breakdown of integrability in the extended model which allows for two generic values of the boundary magnetic field, backing it by some calculations.

Edge critical behaviour of the two-dimensional tri-critical Ising model

Ian K. Affleck

Using previous results from boundary conformal field theory and integrability, a phase diagram is derived for the two-dimensional Ising model at its bulk tri-critical point as a function of boundary magnetic field and boundary spin-coupling constant. A boundary tri-critical point separates phases where the spins on the boundary are ordered or disordered. In the latter range of coupling constant, there is a non-zero critical field where the magnetization is singular. In the former range, as the temperature is lowered, the boundary undergoes a first-order transition while the bulk simultaneously undergoes a second-order transition.

Renormalization-group theory of the random-field Ising model in three dimensions

Alexis Falicov, A. Nihat Berker, Susan R. McKay

A highly detailed renormalization-group study is applied to the equilibrium statistical mechanics of the random-field Ising model in three dimensions, with analysis of the renormalization-group flows of over 8 500 000 quantities that determine the quenched probability distribution. We determine the strong-coupling fixed distribution that controls the finite-temperature phase boundary. This boundary is second order but has a magnetization behavior that is phenomenally close to a discontinuity, with the exponent \ensuremath{\beta}=0.0200\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0005. Magnetization curves are obtained, demonstrating that, for example, the calculated M changes from 0 to 0.407, almost half saturation, as (${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$-T)/${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is varied from 0 to 0.2947\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}16}$. However, a rigorous argument is given showing that the magnetization M cannot be truly discontinuous at phase transitions controlled by a strong-coupling random-field fixed distribution, in renormalization-group studies that employ the Migdal-Kadanoff local recursion relations.

Theory of Toeplitz Determinants and the Spin Correlations of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model. IV

Barry M. McCoy, Tai Tsun Wu

We consider the rectangular Ising model on a half-plane of infinite extent and study some of the consequences connected with the presence of the boundary. Only the spins on the boundary row are allowed to interact with a magnetic field $\mathfrak{H}$. The method of Pfaffians is employed to obtain exact expressions for the partition function. It is found that the free energy is the sum of two terms, one of which is independent of $\mathfrak{H}$ and proportional to the total number of lattice sites, while the other depends on $\mathfrak{H}$ and is proportional to the number of lattice sites on the boundary. This separation makes it possible to define various thermodynamic quantities associated with the boundary. In particular, the boundary magnetization is shown to be discontinuous, in the ferromagnetic case, at zero magnetic field for temperatures below the bulk critical temperature ${T}_{c}$. This discontinuity, which is the spontaneous boundary magnetization, goes to zero as ${(1\ensuremath{-}\frac{T}{{T}_{c}})}^{\frac{1}{2}}$ as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{T}_{c}\ensuremath{-}$. For $T={T}_{c}$, the discontinuity is of course absent, and the boundary magnetization behaves as $\ensuremath{-}\mathfrak{H}\mathrm{ln}\mathfrak{H}$ for small $\mathfrak{H}$. The boundary susceptibility at zero magnetic field in the ferromagnetic case exhibits a logarithmic singularity at $T={T}_{c}$, both above and below transition. An interesting feature is that the ferromagnetic boundary magnetization, although discontinuous for $T<{T}_{c}$, may be analytically continued beyond the point $\mathfrak{H}=0$. We interpret this as a hystersis phenomenon which we study in detail by computing the probability distribution function for the average boundary spin. The correlation function for two spins, both on the boundary row, is also obtained exactly and its asymptotic behavior is given. Finally, we derive an expression for the magnetization in any row and explicitly evaluate it for the second row, i.e., the row next to the boundary.

Critical Ising model with boundary magnetic field: RG interface and effective Hamiltonians

Anatoly Konechny

Abstract Critical 2D Ising model with a boundary magnetic field is arguably the simplest QFT that interpolates between two non-trivial fixed points. We use the diagonalising Bogolyubov transformation for this model to investigate two quantities. Firstly we explicitly construct an RG interface operator that is a boundary condition changing operator linking the free boundary condition with the one with a boundary magnetic field. We investigate its properties and in particular show that in the limit of large magnetic field this operator becomes the dimension 1/16 primary field linking the free and fixed boundary conditions. Secondly we use Schrieffer-Wolff method to construct effective Hamiltonians both near the UV and IR fixed points.

Investigation of the Finite Size Properties of the Ising Model Under Various Boundary Conditions

Magdy E. Amin, M.A.M. Moubark, Yasmin Amin

Abstract The one-dimensional Ising model with various boundary conditions is considered. Exact expressions for the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the model using different kinds of boundary conditions [Dirichlet (D), Neumann (N), and a combination of Neumann–Dirichlet (ND)] are presented in the absence (presence) of a magnetic field. The finite-size scaling functions for internal energy, heat capacity, entropy, magnetisation, and magnetic susceptibility are derived and analysed as function of the temperature and the field. We show that the properties of the one-dimensional Ising model is affected by the finite size of the system and the imposed boundary conditions. The thermodynamic limit in which the finite-size functions approach the bulk case is also discussed.

Discontinuous magnetisation in mean-field theory

Manuel Berrondo, S. Y. Larsen

The authors calculate the classical partition function for a mean-field effective Hamiltonian with a finite number of spins. They find a single-valued magnetisation as a function of the external magnetic field, with a sharp transition at zero magnetic field, below the Curie point. The authors then calculate the thermodynamic limit for the same system (equivalent to the infinite-dimensional Ising model) in a straightforward fashion, and find the corresponding discontinuous behaviour at the phase transition point, with no van der Waals loop.
