Abstract

Abstract The violation of Leggett–Garg inequalities tested the quantumness of neutrino oscillations (NOs) across macroscopic distances. The quantumness can be quantified by using the tools of the quantum resource theories. Recently, a new genuine tripartite entanglement measure (Xie et al. in Phys Rev Lett 127:040403, 2021), concurrence fill, is defined as the square root of the area of the concurrence triangle satisfying all genuine multipartite entanglement conditions. It has several advantages compared to other existing tripartite measures. Here, we focus on using concurrence fill to quantify the tripartite entanglement in three-flavor NOs. Concurrence fill can reach its maximum 0.89 for the experimentally-observed electron antineutrino oscillations, but it cannot for the muon antineutrino oscillations. In both cases, we compare its performance with other three tripartite entanglement measures, including the generalized geometric measure (GGM), the three- $$\pi $$ π entanglement, and the genuinely multipartite concurrence (GMC), in the neutrino propagation, and accordingly show that concurrence fill contains the most quantum resource. Furthermore, concurrence fill and the three- $$\pi $$ π entanglement are always smooth, while GGM and GMC measures have several sharp peaks. The genuine tripartite quantification of the quantumness of three-flavor NOs represents the first step towards the further potential application of neutrinos on quantum information processing.

Concurrence fill and mode distribution of entanglement in neutrino oscillation

Rajrupa Banerjee, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi, Hiranmaya Mishra +1 more

The flavor oscillations in the neutrino system are known to be related to the multimode entanglement of a single particle state. Neutrino oscillations are shown to encompass not only quantum superposition among different mass eigenstates but also a single-particle multimode entanglement in the flavor basis as they propagate. In the framework of three flavor neutrino oscillations, we demonstrate that the measures of entanglement can be expressed in terms of experimentally accessible appearance and disappearance probabilities. We explicitly show here that the genuine tripartite entanglement measure, i.e., the tangle, vanishes identically for all flavors, signifying that a three flavor neutrino system forms a W-type entangled state. Further, we investigate alternative measures of tripartite entanglement like the partial tangle and the concurrence fill, which capture the total sharing of entanglement beyond pairwise correlations. In terms of bipartite and bipartitioned entanglement measures, we derive the symmetric invariant and the concurrence fill, which quantify the distributed entanglement and are completely expressible in terms of flavor transition probabilities. These entanglement measures display distinct energy dependent patterns across the oscillation window, which can be experimentally accessible in the long baseline experiments like DUNE, providing an alternative quantum information perspective on flavor evolution. We use General Long Baseline Experiment Simulator simulations within the DUNE setup to investigate these tripartite entanglement measures in terms of neutrino energy and the length of the baseline. It is observed that, at the point of maximal mixing, these measures show near maximal entanglement between the muon and the tau flavor modes, establishing entanglement monogamy. Within the DUNE setup, the wide band of energy and expected higher sensitivity to C P violation at the second oscillation maximum provide a unique advantage to explore the quantum correlation effects across a broader energy window. Thus, the flavor coherence and C P -phase dependent interference can influence the quantum entanglement measures among neutrino flavor modes, and thereby, such potential new physics effects can be probed in current or future planned neutrino experiments.

Review of quantum resource characteristics in three-flavor neutrino oscillations

WANG Guangjie, SONG Xueke, Y. B. Liu +1 more

Studying the quantum resources of neutrino oscillations is a topic worth exploring. This review mainly introduces the use of quantum resource theory to characterize the quantum resource characteristics of three-flavor neutrino oscillations, and the specific evolutionary patterns of different entanglement measures in three-flavor neutrino oscillations. In addition, by comparing the cases of different entanglement evolutions, the optimal method of quantifying entanglement in three-flavor neutrino oscillations can be obtained. Moreover, this review also focuses on the quantifying the quantumness of neutrino oscillation observed experimentally by using the l1-norm of coherence. The maximal coherence is observed in the neutrino source from the KamLAND reactor. Furthermore, we examine the violation of the Mermin inequality and Svetlichny inequality to study the nonlocality in three-flavor neutrino oscillations. It is shown that even though the genuine tripartite nonlocal correlation is usually existent, it can disappear within specific time regions. In addition, this review also presents the trade-off relations in the quantum resource theory of three-flavor neutrino oscillations, mainly based on monogamy relations and complete complementarity relations. It is hoped that this review can bring inspiration to the development of this field.

Tripartite entanglement measure under local operations and classical communication

Xiaozhen Ge, Lijun Liu, Shuming Cheng

Multipartite entanglement is an indispensable resource in quantum communication and computation; however, it is a challenging task to faithfully quantify this global property of multipartite quantum systems. In this work we study the concurrence fill, which admits a geometric interpretation to measure genuine tripartite entanglement for the three-qubit system [Xie and Eberly, Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 040403 (2021)]. First, we use the well-known three-tangle and bipartite concurrence to reformulate this quantifier for all pure states. We then construct an explicit example to conclusively show that the concurrence fill can be increased under local operations and classical communication (LOCC) on average, implying it is not an entanglement monotone. Moreover, we give a simple proof of the LOCC monotonicity of the three-tangle and find that the bipartite concurrence and the squared concurrence can have distinct performances under the same LOCC. Finally, we propose a reliable monotone to quantify genuine tripartite entanglement, which can also be easily generalized to the multipartite system. Our results shed light on the study of genuine entanglement and also reveal the complex structure of multipartite systems.

Characterizing entanglement and measurement’s uncertainty in neutrino oscillations

Lijuan Li, Fei Ming, Xue‐Ke Song +2 more

Abstract Since neutrino oscillations (NOs) show nonclassical features with the Leggett–Garg inequality and exhibit potential applications in quantum information processing and telecommunications, in order to further reveal quantum properties of the NO systems, we herein focus on investigating entanglement and entropic uncertainty relation in the context of three-flavor NOs. Specifically, we take advantage of three different types of entanglement measures to characterize quantum resources originating from NO systems, and examine the hierarchical relationship among them. Moreover, we analyze the experiment data from different neutrino sources including Daya Bay (0.5 and 1.6 km) and MINOS+ (735 km) collaborations in comparison with our theoretical results. We find that the dynamical evolution of both the entropic uncertainty and entanglement of system shows non-monotonicity, and the experimental results coincide with our theoretical prediction very well. Interestingly, it shows that neutrinos always maintain quantum properties during oscillation process. More importantly, we reveal that the variation of the uncertainty is almost anti-correlated with that of the entanglement of system. Therefore, the nature of entanglement and uncertainty in NOs can be explored in the practical experiment when the three-flavor neutrino states are treated as three-qubit ones, which might be useful for the potential NO-based applications on prospective quantum information processing.

Geometric genuine multipartite entanglement for four-qubit systems

Ansh Mishra, Soumik Mahanti, Abhinash Kumar Roy +1 more

Xie and Eberly introduced a genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) measure ‘concurrence fill’ (Xie and Eberly, 2021) for three-party systems. It is defined as the area of a triangle whose side lengths represent squared concurrence in each bi-partition. However, it has been recently shown that concurrence fill is not monotonic under LOCC, hence not a faithful measure of entanglement. Though it is not a faithful entanglement measure, it encapsulates an elegant geometric interpretation of bipartite squared concurrences. There have been a few attempts to generalize GME quantifier to four-party settings and beyond. However, some of them are not faithful, and others simply lack an elegant geometric interpretation. The recent proposal from Xie et al.. constructs a concurrence tetrahedron, whose volume gives the amount of GME for four-party systems; with generalization to more than four parties being the hypervolume of the simplex structure in that dimension. Here, we show by construction that to capture all aspects of multipartite entanglement, one does not need a more complex structure, and the four-party entanglement can be demonstrated using 2D geometry only. The subadditivity together with the Araki-Lieb inequality of linear entropy is used to construct a direct extension of the geometric GME quantifier to four-party systems resulting in quadrilateral geometry. Our quantifier can be geometrically interpreted as a combination of three quadrilaterals whose sides result from the concurrence in one-to-three bi-partition, and diagonal as concurrence in two-to-two bipartition.

Tri-partite entanglement in neutrino oscillations

Abhishek Kumar Jha, Supratik Mukherjee, Bindu A. Bambah

We investigate and quantify bipartite and tripartite entanglement measures in two- and three-flavor neutrino oscillations. The bipartite entanglement is analogous to the entanglement swapping resulting from a beam splitter in quantum optics. We calculate various entanglement measures, such as the concurrence, negativity, and three-tangle for the three-neutrino system. The significant result is that a monogamy inequality in terms of negativity leads to a residual entanglement, implying genuine tripartite entanglement in the three-neutrino system. We establish an analogy of the three-neutrino state with a generalized W-state class in quantum optics.
