Abstract

The dynamical correlations of nonlocal operators in general quadratic open fermion systems is still a challenging problem. Here we tackle this problem by developing a new formulation of open fermion many-body systems, namely, the characteristic function approach. Illustrating the technique, we analyze a finite Kitaev chain with boundary dissipation and consider anyon-type nonlocal excitations. We give explicit formula for the Green's functions, demonstrating an asymmetric light cone induced by the anyon statistical parameter and an increasing relaxation rate with this parameter. We also analyze some other types of nonlocal operator correlations such as the full counting statistics of the charge number and the Loschmidt echo in a quench from the vacuum state. The former shows clear signature of a nonequilibrium quantum phase transition, while the later exhibits cusps at some critical times and hence demonstrates dynamical quantum phase transitions.

Time-dependent correlation functions in open quadratic fermionic systems

Pavel Kos, Tomaž Prosen

Abstract We formulate and discuss the explicit computation of dynamic correlation functions in open quadratic fermionic systems which are driven and dissipated by Lindblad jump processes that are linear in canonical fermionic operators. Dynamic correlators are interpreted in terms of a local quantum quench where the pre-quench state is a non-equilibrium steady state, i.e. a fixed point of the Liouvillian. As an example, we study the XY spin 1/2 chain and quadratic Majorana chains with boundary Lindblad driving, whose dynamics exhibit asymmetric (skewed) light cone behaviour. We also numerically treat the two-dimensional XY model and the XY spin chain with additional Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions. The latter exhibits a new non-thermal phase transition which can be understood in terms of bifurcations of the quasi-particle dispersion relation. Finally, considering in some detail the periodic quadratic fermionic ring with dissipation at a single (arbitrary) site, we present analytical expressions for first order corrections (in the strength of dissipation) to the spectrum and non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) correlation functions.

Exact dynamical correlations of hard-core anyons in one-dimensional lattices

Qing-Wei Wang

The dynamical correlations of a strongly correlated system are an essential ingredient to describe its nonequilibrium properties. We present a general method to calculate exactly the dynamical correlations of hard-core anyons in one-dimensional lattices, valid for any type of confining potential and any temperature. We obtain exact explicit expressions of the Green's function, the spectral function, and the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs). We find that the anyonic spectral function displays three main singularity lines which can be explained as a double spectrum in analogy to the Lieb-Liniger gas. The dispersion relations of these lines can be given explicitly and they cross at a hot point $({q}_{m},{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m})$, which induces a peak in the momentum distribution function at ${q}_{m}$ and a power-law singularity in the local spectral function at ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}$. We also find that the anyonic statistics can induce spatial asymmetry in the Green's function, its spectrum, and the OTOC. Moreover, the information spreading characterized by the OTOCs shows light-cone dynamics, asymmetric for general statistics and low temperatures, but symmetric at infinite temperature. Our results pave the way toward studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of hard-core anyons and experimentally probing anyonic statistics through spectral functions.

Nonlocal quench spectroscopy of fermionic excitations in quantum spin chains

Saverio Bocini, Filippo Caleca, Fabio Mezzacapo +1 more

The elementary excitations of quantum spin systems have generally the nature of weakly interacting bosonic quasiparticles, generated by local operators acting on the ground state. Nonetheless in one spatial dimension the nature of the quasiparticles can change radically, since many relevant one-dimensional $S=1/2$ Hamiltonians can be exactly mapped onto models of spinless fermions with local hopping and interactions. Due to the nonlocal nature of the spin-to-fermion mapping, observing directly the fermionic quasiparticle excitations is impossible using local probes, which are at the basis of all the forms of spectroscopy (such as neutron scattering) traditionally available in condensed-matter physics. Here, we show theoretically that quench spectroscopy for synthetic quantum matter---which probes the excitation spectrum of a system by monitoring the nonequilibrium dynamics of its correlation functions---can reconstruct accurately the dispersion relation of fermionic quasiparticles in spin chains. This possibility relies on the ability of quantum simulation experiments to measure nonlocal spin-spin correlation functions, corresponding to elementary fermionic correlation functions. Our analysis is based on exact results for the quench dynamics of quantum spin chains, and it opens the path to probe arbitrary quasiparticle excitations in synthetic quantum matter.

Quantum dynamics of monitored free fermions: Evolution of quantum correlations and scaling at measurement-induced phase transitions

Igor Poboiko, A. D. Mirlin

We explore, both analytically and numerically, the quantum dynamics of a many-body free-fermion system subjected to local density measurements. We begin by extending the mapping to the nonlinear sigma-model (NLSM) field theory for the case of finite evolution time T and different classes of initial states, which lead to different NLSM boundary conditions. The analytical formalism is then used to study how quantum correlations gradually develop, with increasing T , from those determined by the initial state towards their steady-state form. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations for several types of initial states. We further consider the long-time limit, when the system in d + 1 space-time dimensions becomes quasi-one-dimensional, and analyze the scaling of the “localization” time (which is simultaneously the purification time and the charge-sharpening time for this class of problems). The analytical predictions for scaling properties are fully confirmed by numerical simulations in a d = 2 model around the measurement-induced phase transition. We use this dynamical approach to determine numerically the measurement-induced transition point and the associated correlation-length critical exponent.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Lindbladians

Kohei Kawabata, Anish Kulkarni, Jiachen Li +2 more

We study the open quantum dynamics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model described by the Lindblad master equation, where the SYK model is coupled to Markovian reservoirs with jump operators that are either linear or quadratic in the Majorana fermion operators. Of particular interest for us is the time evolution of the dissipative form factor, which quantifies the average overlap between the initial and time-evolved density matrices as an open quantum generalization of the Loschmidt echo. We find that the dissipative form factor exhibits dynamical quantum phase transitions. We analytically demonstrate a discontinuous dynamical phase transition in the limit of a large number of fermion flavors, which is formally akin to the thermal phase transition in the two-coupled SYK model between the black-hole and wormhole phases. We also find continuous dynamical phase transitions that do not have counterparts in the two-coupled SYK model. While the phase transitions are sharp in the limit of a large number of fermion flavors, their qualitative signatures are present even for a finite number of fermion flavors, as we show numerically.

Correlations and dynamical quantum phase transitions in an interacting topological insulator

Wing Chi Yu, Pedro D Sacramento, Yanchao Li +1 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), which refer to the criticality in time of a quantum many-body system, have attracted much theoretical and experimental research interest recently. Despite that DQPTs are defined and signaled by the nonanalyticities in the Loschmidt rate, its interrelation with various correlation measures such as the equilibrium order parameters of the system remains unclear. In this work, by considering the quench dynamics in an interacting topological model, we find that the equilibrium order parameters of the model in general exhibit signatures around the DQPT, in the short time regime. The first extrema of the equilibrium order parameters are connected to the first Loschmidt rate peak. By studying the unequal-time two-point correlation, we also find that the correlation between the nearest neighbors decays while that with neighbors further away builds up as time grows in the noninteracting case, and upon the addition of repulsive intracell interactions. On the other hand, the intercell interaction tends to suppress the two-site correlations. These findings could provide us insights into the characteristic of the system around DQPTs, and pave the way to a better understanding of the dynamics in nonequilibrium quantum many-body systems.
