Abstract

Since the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ dimer supports only one weakly bound state with an average interatomic distance much larger than the van der Waals length and no deeply bound states, $^{4}\mathrm{He}_{N}$ clusters with $N>2$ are a paradigmatic model system with which to explore foundational concepts such as large $s$-wave scattering length universality, van der Waals universality, Efimov physics, and effective field theories. This work presents structural properties such as the pair and triple distribution functions, the hyper-radial density, the probability to find the $N\mathrm{th}$ particle at a given distance from the center of mass of the other $N\ensuremath{-}1$ atoms, and selected contacts. The kinetic energy release, which can be measured via Coulomb explosion in dedicated size-selected molecular beam experiments---at least for small $N$ -- is also presented. The structural properties are determined for three different realistic $^{4}\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{-}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ interaction potentials and contrasted with those for an effective low-energy potential model from the literature that reproduces the energies of $^{4}\mathrm{He}_{N}$ clusters in the ground state for $N=2$ to $N=\ensuremath{\infty}$ at the $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}$95% level with just four input parameters. The study is extended to unitarity (infinite $s$-wave scattering length) by artificially weakening the interaction potentials. In addition to contributing to the characterization of small bosonic helium quantum droplets, our study provides insights into the effective low-energy theory's predictability of various structural properties.

Structure and energetics of small helium clusters: Quantum simulations using a recent perturbational pair potential

Marius Lewerenz

Abstract Small helium clusters Hen (n = 2, 3, ... , 10) in molecular beams produced by supersonic expansion of gaseous helium have been observed in several different experiments. Among these clusters the dimer, which has a single very slightly bound state, and the trimer, which could have many bound states, have especially unusual properties which QMC calculations can explain in detail. In this paper, diffusion QMC calculations were used to determine ground state properties for clusters (n = 2, ... , 10) using two accurate, but slightly different pairwise-additive potential energy expressions, a perturbation-based potential by Tang et al.a and an empirical potential (HFD-B) proposed by Aziz et al.b Trial functions for importance sampling were based on those determined earlier by Rick et alc. Expectation values and probability distributions were determined by the descendent-weighting technique to give results independent of the trial functions. As expected, a single bound state of the dimer was found, and its average internuclear distance was predicted to be 51.5 A. Energies for clusters with n = 2, 7 with the HFD-B potential were in good agreement with those of earlier calculations. Comparisons of the results for the two different potential energy expressions showed energies differing by a few percent. Tests of possible nonadditive interactions showed these to be far less important in their effects on predicted energies.

Structure and dynamics of few-helium clusters using soft-core potentials

Alejandro Kievsky, M. Viviani, M. Gattobigio +2 more

In this work we investigate the structure and dynamics of small clusters of Helium atoms. We consider bound states of clusters having A = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 atoms and continuum states in the three-atom system. Motivated by the fact that the He-He system has a very large scattering length a compared to the range r 0 of the He-He potential (r 0/a < 1/10), we propose the use of a soft-core interparticle potential. We use an attractive gaussian potential that reproduces the values of the dimer binding energy and the atomatom scattering length obtained with one of the widely used He-He interactions, the LM2M2 potential. In addition, we include a repulsive three-body force to reproduce the trimer binding energy. With this model, consisting in the sum of a two- and a three-body potential, we show the spectrum of the four, five, and sixparticle systems and phase-shifts and inelasticities in the three-atom system. Comparisons to calculations using realistic He-He potentials are given. In addition some universal relations are explored.

Energetics and structural properties of three-dimensional bosonic clusters near threshold

Gabriel Hanna, D. Blume

We treat three-dimensional bosonic clusters with up to $N=40$ atoms, interacting additively through two-body van der Waals potentials, in the near-threshold regime. Our study includes super-borromean systems with $N$ atoms for which all subsystems are unbound. We determine the energetics and structural properties such as the expectation value of the interparticle distance as a function of the coupling strength. It has been shown that the coupling strength ${g}_{*}^{(N)}$, for which the $N$-body system becomes unbound, is bounded by the coupling constant ${g}_{*}^{(N\ensuremath{-}1)}$, for which the next smaller system with $N\ensuremath{-}1$ atoms becomes unbound, i.e., ${g}_{*}^{(N)}\ensuremath{\geqslant}(N\ensuremath{-}1){g}_{*}^{(N\ensuremath{-}1)}∕N$. By fitting our numerically determined ground-state energies to a simple functional form with three fitting parameters, we determine the relationship between ${g}_{*}^{(N)}$ and ${g}_{*}^{(N\ensuremath{-}1)}$. Our trimer and tetramer energies fall on the so-called Tjon line, which has been studied in nuclear physics. We confirm the existence of generalized Tjon lines for larger clusters. Signatures of the universal behavior of weakly bound three-dimensional clusters can possibly be observed in ultracold Bose gases.

Interactions and dynamics of metastable triplet-state helium dimer with Ne and Ar

Dibyendu Sardar, François Lique

Helium dimer in its metastable triplet electronic state, He$_2(a~^3Σ_u^+)$, is a promising candidate for direct laser cooling and precision measurements. Interactions and collisions involving He$_2(a~^3Σ_u^+)$ remain unexplored in ultracold and cold energy domains. Here, we present the first theoretical investigation of intermolecular interactions and collision dynamics of He$_2(a~^3Σ_u^+)$+Ne van der Waals complex. For the ground electronic state, $X~^3\mathrm{A}'$, we employ a spin-restricted coupled cluster method with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations. The resulting interaction potential exhibits an extremely shallow well with a depth of 4.612 cm$^{-1}$. We construct a three-dimensional vibrationally averaged potential energy surface. Using this surface, we perform full close-coupling calculations including fine-structure levels of He$_2(a~^3Σ_u^+)$ to investigate collisional excitation and quenching induced by Ne. We analyze the low-energy scattering dynamics and model resonant features associated with quasi-bound states supported by interaction potential. Propensity rule for fine-structure conserving transitions is established. We additionally consider He$_2$+Ar collisions and compare their energy dependence and resonance structure with those of He$_2$+Ne. The He$_2$+Ar system exhibits a richer resonance structure, highlighting the sensitivity of low-energy scattering to interaction potential and reduced mass. Calculated PES and scattering properties provide a reliable benchmark for description of He$_2$+Ne van der Waals complex and may be useful for interpretation of future experimental spectra and collision measurements.

Energy and structural properties of N -boson clusters attached to three-body Efimov states: Two-body zero-range interactions and the role of the three-body regulator

Yangqian Yan, D. Blume

The low-energy spectrum of $N$-boson clusters with pairwise zero-range interactions is believed to be governed by a three-body parameter. We study the ground state of $N$-boson clusters with infinite two-body $s$-wave scattering length by performing ab initio Monte Carlo simulations. To prevent Thomas collapse, different finite-range three-body regulators are used. The energy and structural properties for the three-body Hamiltonian with two-body zero-range interactions and three-body regulator are in much better agreement with the ``ideal zero-range Efimov theory'' results than those for Hamiltonian with two-body finite-range interactions. For larger clusters we find that the ground-state energy and structural properties of the Hamiltonian with two-body zero-range interactions and finite-range three-body regulators are not universally determined by the three-body parameter, i.e., dependencies on the specific form of the three-body regulator are observed. For comparison, we consider Hamiltonian with two-body van der Waals interactions and no three-body regulator. For the interactions considered, the ground-state energy of the $N$-body clusters is---if scaled by the three-body ground-state energy---fairly universal, i.e., the dependence on the short-range details of the two-body van der Waals potentials is small. Our results are compared with those in the literature.

Energy spectra of small bosonic clusters having a large two-body scattering length

M. Gattobigio, Alejandro Kievsky, M. Viviani

In this work we investigate small clusters of bosons using the hyperspherical harmonic basis. We consider systems with $A=2,3,4,5,6$ particles interacting through a soft interparticle potential. In order to make contact with a real system, we use an attractive Gaussian potential that reproduces the values of the dimer binding energy and the atom-atom scattering length obtained with one of the most widely used ${}^{4}$He-${}^{4}$He interactions, the LM2M2 potential of Aziz and Slaman. The intensity of the potential is varied in order to explore the clusters' spectra in different regions with large positive and large negative values of the two-body scattering length. In addition, we include a repulsive three-body force to reproduce the trimer binding energy. With this model, consisting in the sum of a two- and three-body potential, we have calculated the spectrum of the four-, five-, and six-particle systems. In all the regions explored, we have found that these systems present two states, one deep and one shallow close to the $A\ensuremath{-}1$ threshold. Some universal relations between the energy levels are extracted; in particular, we have estimated the universal ratios between thresholds of the three-, four-, and five-particle continua using the two-body Gaussian potential. They agree with recent measurements and theoretical predictions.
