Abstract

We construct a broad class of frustration-free quantum vertex models in $3+1$ dimensions ($3+1\mathrm{D}$) whose ground states are weighted superpositions of classical 3D vertex model configurations. Our results are illustrated for diamond, cubic, and BCC lattices, but hold in general for 3D lattices with even coordination number. The corresponding classical vertex models have a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge constraint enriched with a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ global symmetry. We study the interplay between these symmetries by exploiting exact wave function dualities and effective field theories. We find an exact gapless point which by duality is related to the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point of $U(1)$ spin liquids. At this point, both the symmetry breaking and deconfinement order parameters exhibit long range order. The gapless point is additionally a self-dual point of a second duality that maps the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ deconfined and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry-broken phases to one another. For the BCC lattice vertex model, we find that gapless point is proximate to an unusual intermediate phase where symmetry breaking and deconfinement coexist.

Classical vertex model dualities in a family of two-dimensional frustrated quantum antiferromagnets

Shankar Balasubramanian, Victor M. Galitski, Ashvin Vishwanath

We study a general class of easy-axis spin models on a lattice of corner sharing even-sided polygons with all-to-all interactions within a plaquette. The low-energy description corresponds to a quantum dimer model on a dual lattice of even coordination number with a multidimer constraint. At an appropriately constructed frustration-free Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, the ground-state wavefunction can be exactly mapped onto a classical vertex model on the dual lattice. When the dual lattice is bipartite, the vertex models are bonded and are self-dual under Wegner's duality, with the self-dual point corresponding to the RK point of the original multidimer model. We argue that the self-dual point is a critical point based on known exact solutions to some of the vertex models. When the dual lattice is nonbipartite, the vertex model is arrowed, and we use numerical methods to argue that there is no phase transition as a function of the vertex weights. Motivated by these wavefunction dualities, we construct two other distinct families of frustration-free Hamiltonians whose ground states can be mapped onto these vertex models. Many of these RK Hamiltonians provably host ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topologically ordered phases.

Exactly Solvable Model for a Deconfined Quantum Critical Point in 1D

Carolyn Zhang, Michael Levin

We construct an exactly solvable lattice model for a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) in ($1+1$) dimensions. This DQCP occurs in an unusual setting, namely, at the edge of a ($2+1$) dimensional bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry. The DQCP describes a transition between two gapped edges that break different ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ subgroups of the full ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry. Our construction is based on an exact mapping between the SPT edge theory and a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{4}$ spin chain. This mapping reveals that DQCPs in this system are directly related to ordinary ${\mathbb{Z}}_{4}$ symmetry breaking critical points.

Duality-preserving deformation of 3 + 1 d lattice Z 2 gauge theory with exact gapped ground states

Pranay Gorantla, Tzu-Chen Huang

We propose and analyze a deformation of the $3+1\mathrm{d}$ lattice ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory that preserves the noninvertible Wegner duality symmetry at the self-dual point. We identify a frustration-free point along this deformation where there are nine exactly degenerate ground states (on a periodic cubic lattice) even at finite volume. One of these ground states is a trivial product state and the rest are the topologically ordered ground states of the $3+1\mathrm{d}$ toric code, and they are exchanged by the Wegner duality. We also prove that the frustration-free point is gapped in the thermodynamic limit. Our model, therefore, realizes a gapped phase with spontaneously broken Wegner duality symmetry. Furthermore, by imposing the Gauss law constraints energetically, all the above features can be realized on a tensor product Hilbert space. Finally, we discuss a generalization of this deformation to the $3+1\mathrm{d}$ lattice ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ gauge theory and conjecture the possible phase diagram.

Analogs of deconfined quantum criticality for noninvertible symmetry breaking in one dimension

Yu-Hsueh Chen, Tarun Grover

The spontaneous breaking of noninvertible symmetries can lead to exotic phenomena such as the coexistence of order and disorder. Here, we explore second-order phase transitions in one-dimensional spin chains between two phases that correspond to distinct patterns of noninvertible symmetry breaking. The critical point shares several features with well-understood examples of deconfined quantum critical points, such as enlarged symmetry and identical exponents for the two order parameters participating in the transition. Interestingly, such deconfined transitions involving noninvertible symmetries allow one to construct a whole family of similar critical points by gauging spin-flip symmetries. By employing gauging and bosonization, we characterize the phase diagram of our model in the vicinity of the critical point. We also explore proximate phases and phase transitions in related models, including a deconfined quantum critical point between invertible order parameters that is enforced by a noninvertible symmetry.

Self-dual criticality in three-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory with matter

A. M. Somoza, Pablo Serna, Adam Nahum

The simplest topologically ordered phase in 2+1D is the deconfined phase of $Z_2$ gauge theory, realized for example in the toric code. This phase permits a duality that exchanges electric and magnetic excitations (``$e$'' and ``$m$'' particles). Condensing either particle while the other remains gapped yields a phase transition with 3D Ising exponents. More mysterious, however, is the transition out of the deconfined phase when self-duality symmetry is preserved. If this transition is continuous, which has so far been unclear, then it may be the simplest critical point for which we still lack any useful continuum Lagrangian description. This transition also has a soft matter interpretation, as a multicritical point for classical membranes in 3D. We study the self-dual transition with Monte Carlo simulations of the $Z_2$ gauge-Higgs model on cubic lattices of linear size $L\leq 96$. Our results indicate a continuous transition: for example, cumulants show a striking parameter-free scaling collapse. We estimate scaling dimensions by using duality symmetry to distinguish the leading duality-odd/duality-even scaling operators $A$ and $S$. All local operators have large scaling dimensions, making standard techniques for locating the critical point ineffective. We develop an alternative using ``renormalization group trajectories'' of cumulants. We check that two- and three-point functions, and temporal correlators in the Monte-Carlo dynamics, are scale-invariant, with scaling dimensions $x_A$ and $x_S$ and dynamical exponent $z$. We also give a picture for emergence of 1-form symmetries, in some parts of the phase diagram, in terms of ``patching'' of membranes/worldsurfaces. We relate this to the percolation of anyon worldlines in spacetime. Analyzing percolation yields a fourth exponent for the self-dual transition. We propose variations of the model for further investigation.

Generalized symmetry enriched criticality in (3+1)d

Benjamin Moy

We construct two classes of continuous phase transitions in 3+1 dimensions between gapped phases that break distinct generalized global symmetries. Our analysis focuses on SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N S U ( N ) / ℤ N gauge theory coupled to N_f N f flavors of Majorana fermions in the adjoint representation. For N N even and sufficiently large odd N_f N f , upon imposing time-reversal symmetry and an SO(N_f) S O ( N f ) flavor symmetry, the massless theory realizes a quantum critical point between a gapped phase in which a \mathbb{Z}_N ℤ N one-form symmetry is completely broken and a phase where it is broken to \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 , leading to \mathbb{Z}_{N/2} ℤ N / 2 topological order. We characterize the possible patterns of symmetry fractionalization in these phases and provide an explicit lattice model that exhibits the transition. The critical point has an enhanced symmetry, which includes non-invertible analogues of time-reversal symmetry. Enforcing a non-invertible time-reversal symmetry and the SO(N_f) S O ( N f ) flavor symmetry, for N N and N_f N f both odd, we demonstrate that this critical point can appear between a topologically ordered phase and a phase that spontaneously breaks the non-invertible time-reversal symmetry, furnishing an analogue of deconfined quantum criticality for generalized symmetries.
