Generalized Heisenberg uncertainty relation in spherical coordinates

Abstract

Following to the Weil method, we generalize the Heisenberg–Robertson uncertainty relation for arbitrary two operators. Consideration is made in spherical coordinates, where the distant variable [Formula: see text] is restricted from one side, [Formula: see text]. By this reason, accounting of suitable boundary condition at the origin for radial wavefunctions and operators is necessary. Therefore, there arise extra surface terms in comparison with traditional approaches. These extra terms are calculated for various solvable potentials and their influence is investigated. At last, the time–energy uncertainty relations are also analyzed. Some differences between our approach and that, in which a direct product for separate variances were considered, are discussed.

Generalized uncertainty principle from deformed angular momentum algebra

Ahmad Adel Abutaleb

This work establishes a link between deformed angular momentum operators and modifications of the quantum uncertainty principle. Starting from an algebra in which the standard angular momentum operators are deformed by two parameters, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], we construct the corresponding momentum operators via [Formula: see text] where the radial operator [Formula: see text] is determined by the requirement that the standard momentum operator is recovered in the limit [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]. The resulting commutation relations take the form [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is a position-dependent deformation matrix. This leads to an uncertainty relation [Formula: see text] which is state-dependent, anisotropic and position-dependent. We use the term Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) in its broad sense referring to any modification of the Heisenberg relation motivated by quantum-gravity ideas. However, the model does not yield a fixed minimal length of the kind familiar from conventional GUP models (e.g. [Formula: see text]). In the isotropic, limit the trace of the deformation matrix simplifies the bound to [Formula: see text] which can be considered as a rescaling of the uncertainty constant. Our work thus provides a geometric origin for modified uncertainty relations from symmetry breaking in the rotation group, and offers a framework in which quantum-gravity effects manifest themselves through state- and direction-dependent measurement limits, without necessarily introducing a universal minimal length.

Hypervirial and Ehrenfest Theorems in Spherical Coordinates: Systematic Approach

Anzor Khelashvili, Teimuraz Nadareishvili

Abstract Elaboration of some fundamental relations in 3-dimensional quantum mechanics is considered taking into account the restricted character of areas in radial distance. In such cases the boundary behavior of the radial wave function and singularity of operators at the origin of coordinates contribute to these relations. We derive the relation between the average value of the operator’s time derivative and the time derivative of the mean value of this operator, which is usually considered to be the same by definition. The deviation from the known result is deduced and manifested by extra term, which depends on the boundary behavior mentioned above. The general form for this extra term takes place in the hypervirial-like theorems. As a particular case, the virial theorem for Coulomb and oscillator potentials is considered and correction to the Kramers’ sum rule is derived. Moreover, the corrected Ehrenfest theorem is deduced and its consistency with real physical picture is demonstrated.

Remarks on the uncertainty relations

K. Urbanowski

We analyze general uncertainty relations and we show that there can exist such pairs of non-commuting observables [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] and such vectors that the lower bound for the product of standard deviations [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] calculated for these vectors is zero: [Formula: see text]. We also show that for some pairs of non-commuting observables the sets of vectors for which [Formula: see text] can be complete (total). The Heisenberg, [Formula: see text], and Mandelstam–Tamm (MT), [Formula: see text], time–energy uncertainty relations ([Formula: see text] is the characteristic time for the observable [Formula: see text]) are analyzed too. We show that the interpretation [Formula: see text] for eigenvectors of a Hamiltonian [Formula: see text] does not follow from the rigorous analysis of MT relation. We show also that contrary to the position–momentum uncertainty relation, the validity of the MT relation is limited: It does not hold on complete sets of eigenvectors of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text].

How to generalize the Ehrenfest theorem and the uncertainty principle

Klaus Renziehausen, Ingo Barth

The Ehrenfest theorem and the Robertson uncertainty relation are well-known basic equations in quantum mechanics. However, there exist problematic cases, where the Ehrenfest theorem and the Robertson uncertainty relation are not correct. These cases occur when the azimuthal angle in polar or spherical coordinates is used within these equations. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss a generalized Ehrenfest theorem and a generalized uncertainty relation which are still valid for these cases. Hereby, we define and use a mathematical operation called expectation commutator.

Application of Modified Hypervirial and Ehrenfest Theorems and Several Their Consequences

Anzor Khelashvili, Teimuraz Nadareishvili

Abstract It is well-known that if the physical system is located in the restricted area, additional “surface terms” emerge in the traditional form of hypervirial and/or Erenfest theorems. In the current literature mainly one-dimensional Schrodinger equation was considered in this respect. Our observation consists in that this situation emerges automatically in spherical coordinates, as well as one of the coordinates, namely radial distance, is restricted by a half-line. In particular, these considerations are clearly manifested, when one consider spherically symmetric potentials and operators, depended only on distance. Evidently, these additional terms give rise owing the boundary conditions for wave functions and the behavior of the considered operators at the origin of coordinates. We have analyzed the role of these additional terms for various model- potentials in the Schrodinger equation. We consider regular, as well as soft-singular potentials and show that the inclusion of these terms is very important for obtaining correct physical results. Some complicated integrals for hypergeometric functions are also derived. The modified virial relations, derived below, is converted into the usual relations, when the additional terms are absent and when present, they give reasonable corrections in correct direction. This fact also provides its legitimacy.

Some Quantum-Mechanical Relations in case of singular operators and potentials

Anzor Khelashvili, Teimuraz Nadareishvili

Elaboration of some fundamental relations in three dimensional quantum mechanics is considered in connection to taking into account the restriction on domains in radial distance. In such cases the boundary behavior of the radial wave function and singularity of operators at the origin of coordinates contribute to these relations. In particular, we derive the relation between the average value of operator time derivative and the time derivative of mean value of this operator, which usually is considered as the same by definition. The deviation from known result is deduced manifested by extra term, which depends on boundary behavior mentioned above. The general form for this extra term participates to the hypervirial like theorems. As a particular case, the virial theorem for a Coulomb potential is considered and correction to the Kramers sum rule is derived. Moreover the corrected Ehrenfest theorem is deduced also and its consistency with real physical picture is demonstrated.
