Abstract

We theoretically investigate the optical bistability phenomenon in an ensemble of $N$ non-interacting three-level atoms trapped inside an optical cavity. The atoms are in a $Λ$-level configuration, where one atomic transition is coupled by a cavity mode, while the other one is coupled by a classical field. In addition, we consider a pumping field driving the cavity mode. With this system, we are able to observe new kinds of hysteresis, while scanning either the frequency of the pumping field or the Rabi frequency (intensity) of the control field. We show that they can be highly controllable via external parameters of the system, achieving very narrow widths, thus being very useful for building new devices, such as small fluctuation detectors in either frequency or intensity of laser fields.

Dynamical hysteresis in a three-level atomic system

Amitabh Joshi, Wenge Yang, Min Xiao

We have experimentally investigated dynamical hysteresis behavior by changing the sweeping frequency of the cavity input field in the optical bistability of rubidium atoms (in a three-level atomic-type configuration) inside an optical cavity. The shape, width (or area), and direction of the hysteresis cycle are sensitive functions of the sweeping frequency for such an optical bistable system.

Controlling optical bistability in a three-level atomic system

We have experimentally studied the optical bistable behavior in an optical ring cavity filled with a collection of three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type rubidium atoms, interacting with two collinearly propagating laser beams. The bistability so observed is very sensitive to the induced atomic coherence in this electromagnetically induced transparency system or consequently to the altered nonlinearity in the system and, thus, can easily be controlled by changing the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field.

Control of the threshold intensity and hysteresis cycle of optical Bi(multi)stability via atomic injection and exit rates from cavity

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Ali Khaledi‐Nasab, Hossein Ghaforyan +1 more

The optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) in an open Λ-type three-level atomic system inside a ring cavity are investigated. It is found that the ratio of atomic injections β and the exit rates r 0 from cavity evidently affects the threshold intensity of OB and OM. The effect of incoherent pumping field on the OB and OM of a medium is discussed. We show that the bistable behavior of the open system significantly differs from that in a corresponding closed system, especially with an increase in the incoherent pump rate. The intensity threshold is reduced in an open system but increases in a closed system. In addition, the dependence of OB and OM in an open system on spontaneously generated coherence, the relative phase the between probe and coupling fields, the coupling-field intensity, and the cooperation parameter are briefly discussed.

Controllable optical bistability in a hybrid optomechanical system

Bijita Sarma, Amarendra K. Sarma

We investigate theoretically the effect of optical feedback from a cavity containing an ultracold two level atomic ensemble, on the bistable behavior shown by mean intracavity optical field in an optomechanical cavity resonator. It turns out that the optical bistability can be controlled by tuning the frequency and power of the single driving laser as well as by varying different system parameters provided by the hybrid interaction. Significantly, even though the atomic cavity is not driven by any laser pump and there is no coupling with the mechanical oscillator directly, the intracavity optical field in the atomic cavity also exhibits bistability due to the optical coupling with the optomechanical cavity. In essence, our work emphasizes the possibility of realization of a better controllable optical switch depending on the hybrid interaction.

Dynamical hysteresis in optical bistability of a three-level atomic system

Amitabh Joshi, Wenge Yang, Min Xiao

We have experimentally investigated the dynamical hysteresis cycles in the optical bistability from the vapor of rubidium atoms contained in an optical cavity by changing the sweeping frequency of the input cavity field. The shape, width and direction of the hysteresis cycle are sensitive functions of the sweeping frequency parameter.

Controlling Optical Bistability and Multistability in a Three-level ∧-type Atomic System Under the Nonresonant Condition

Zhiping Wang

Under nonresonant condition,we theoretically investigate the optical bistability(OB) and multistability(OM) behaviors in a three-level ∧-type system using a microwave field driving a hyperfine transition between two lower states inside the unidirectional ring cavity. The results show that the optical bistability behavior can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field, respectively. It is also found that the microwave field plays an important role in achieving the multistability. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OM behavior is discussed at last.
