Abstract

In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry-group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond-nearest-neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry-breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and may provide guidance for the symmetry classifications of mean field solutions in further investigations.

Ground-state phase diagram of the dimerized spin-1/2 two-leg ladder*

Cong Fu, Hui Zhao, Yuguang Chen +1 more

Dimerized spin-1/2 ladders exhibit a variety of phase structures, which depend on the intra-chain and inter-chain spin exchange energies as well as on the dimerization pattern of the ladder. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, we study critical properties of the bond-alternating two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder with diagonal interaction J ×. Two types of spin systems, staggered dimerized antiferromagnetic ladder and columnar dimerized ferro-antiferromagnetic couplings ladder, are investigated. To clarify the phase transition behaviors, we simultaneously analyze the string order parameter (SOP), the twisted order parameter (TOP), as well as a measurement of the quantum information analysis. Based on measuring this different observables, we establish the phase diagram accurately and give the fitting functions of the phase boundaries. In addition, the phase transition of cross-coupled spin ladder (in the absence of intrinsic dimerization) is also discussed.

Renormalization group analysis for bosonization coefficients in half-odd-integer Kitaev spin chains

Jianxun Li, Chao Xu, Wang Yang

Based on a renormalization-group (RG) analysis, we study the bosonization formulas for spin-$S$ Kitaev-Gamma and Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chains in the parameter regime $K<0$, $Γ>0$, and $J>0$, with $S$ being a half-odd integer. We find that the effects associated with the breaking of emergent continuous symmetries in the bosonization formulas scale as $1/S$ in the large-$S$ limit, in qualitative agreement with density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) results for Kitaev-Gamma chains. For Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chains, the low-energy excitations are characterized by incommensurate gapless wave vectors, and symmetry analysis yields ten independent bosonization coefficients, five of which are predicted by the RG analysis to be independent of the Heisenberg coupling up to linear order. Our results provide useful input for determining magnetic ordering tendencies in two-dimensional Kitaev spin models within a quasi-one-dimensional approach.

Nonsymmorphic Luttinger liquids in generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin- 12 chains

Wang Yang, Chao Xu, Shenglong Xu +2 more

We perform a detailed study on the consequences of the nonsymmorphic symmetries in the Luttinger phase of the one-dimensional (1D) spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model with an antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction. Although the low-energy Hamiltonian has an emergent U(1) symmetry, the bosonization formulas for the spin operators contain ten nonuniversal coefficients which only respect the discrete nonsymmorphic symmetries and can be determined by our density matrix renormalization group simulations to a high degree of accuracy. Using the nonsymmorphic bosonization formulas, the response to weak magnetic field is analyzed, and the zigzag phase in the 2D Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model is recovered by weakly coupling an infinite number of 1D chains. Furthermore, we find a line of critical points with an emergent $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{1}$ conformal symmetry located on the boundary of the Luttinger liquid phase. Our work reveals the rich physics related to nonsymmorphic symmetries in strongly correlated quantum magnetic models, and demonstrates the usefulness of 1D analysis for understanding the 2D Kitaev physics.

Unveiling the phase diagram of a bond-alternating spin- 12 K−Γ chain

Qiang Luo, Jize Zhao, Xiaoqun Wang +1 more

The quantum spin chain with bond-directional interactions can host fascinating phenomena. Here, the authors study such a spin chain, built of a Kitaev interaction and an off-diagonal exchange (dubbed the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ term). This model possesses a self-dual relation and a mirror symmetry, and is found to exhibit a multicritical point, two topological phase transitions of distinct universality classes, three magnetically ordered states, and four disordered phases including the preeminent Haldane phase. These findings demonstrate a fertile playground to study quantum magnetism and topological phase transitions.

Bond-Alternating Antiferromagnetic S = 1/2 Heisenberg Ladder with Ferromagnetic Diagonal Coupling

Li An-Kang, LU Jun-Zhe, Ma Lei

Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we determine the phase diagram of a frustrated bond-alternating S = 1/2 Heisenberg ladder with ferro-antiferromagnetic couplings at zero temperature. With the interactions between spins along the rungs set, we identify three spin-gapped phases (the Haldane phase, the singlet phase and the dimer phase) in the whole parameter range. The analysis of our data shows that two-leg spin bond-alternating ladders have a rich phase diagram if both rung and diagonal couplings are taken into account.

Brane order and quantum magnetism in modulated anisotropic ladders

Toplal Pandey, Gennady Y. Chitov

Two-leg spin-$1/2$ ladders with anisotropy and two different dimerization patterns are analyzed at zero temperature. This model is equivalent to a modulated interacting (Kitaev) ladder. The Hartree-Fock mean-field approximation reduces the model to a sum of two quadratic effective Majorana Hamiltonians, which are dual to two quantum transverse XY chains. The mapping between the effective Hamiltonian of the ladder and a pair of chains considerably simplifies calculations of the order parameters and analysis of the hidden symmetry breaking. The ground-state phase diagram of the staggered ladder contains nine phases, four of them are conventional antiferromagnets, while the other five possess nonlocal brane orders. Using the dualities and the newly found exact results for the local and string order parameters of the transverse XY chains, we were able to find analytically all the magnetizations and the brane order parameters for the staggered case, as functions of the renormalized couplings of the effective Hamiltonian. The columnar ladder has three ground-state phases and does not possess magnetic long-ranged order. The brane order parameters for these three phases are calculated numerically from the Toeplitz determinants. All brane-ordered phases are spin liquids with identified distinct order parameters, winding numbers, and sets of the Majorana edge modes. Disorder lines and the special points of disentanglement are found in both dimerization patterns. We expect this study to motivate the search for the real spin-Peierls anisotropic ladder compounds which manifest predicted properties.
