Anomalous multifractality in quantum chains with strongly correlated disorder

Abstract

We demonstrate numerically that a robust and unusual multifractal regime can emerge in a one-dimensional quantum chain with maximally correlated disorder, above a threshold disorder strength. This regime is preceded by a mixed and an extended regime at weaker disorder strengths, with the former hosting both extended and multifractal eigenstates. The multifractal states we find are markedly different from conventional multifractal states in their structure, as they reside approximately uniformly over a continuous segment of the chain, and the lengths of these segments scale nontrivially with system size. This anomalous nature also leaves imprints on dynamics. An initially localized wave packet shows ballistic transport, in contrast to the slow, generally subdiffusive, transport commonly associated with multifractality. However, the timescale over which this ballistic transport persists again scales nontrivially with the system size.

Multifractality and its role in anomalous transport in the disordered XXZ spin-chain

David J. Luitz, Ivan M. Khaymovich, Lev, Y.

The disordered XXZ model is a prototype model of the many-body localization transition (MBL). Despite numerous studies of this model, the available numerical evidence of multifractality of its eigenstates is not very conclusive due severe finite size effects. Moreover it is not clear if similarly to the case of single-particle physics, multifractal properties of the many-body eigenstates are related to anomalous transport, which is observed in this model. In this work, using a state-of-the-art, massively parallel, numerically exact method, we study systems of up to 24 spins and show that a large fraction of the delocalized phase flows towards ergodicity in the thermodynamic limit, while a region immediately preceding the MBL transition appears to be multifractal in this limit. We discuss the implication of our finding on the mechanism of subdiffusive transport.

Anomalous localization and multifractality in a kicked quasicrystal

Toshihiko Shimasaki, Max Prichard, H. Esat Kondakci +7 more

Multifractal states offer a "third way" for quantum matter, neither fully localized nor ergodic, exhibiting singular continuous spectra, self-similar wavefunctions, and transport and entanglement scaling exponents intermediate between extended and localized states. While multifractality in equilibrium systems generally requires fine-tuning to a critical point, externally driven quantum matter can exhibit multifractal states with no equilibrium counterpart. We report the experimental observation of multifractal matter and anomalous localization in a kicked Aubry-André-Harper quasicrystal. Our cold-atom realization of this previously-unexplored model is enabled by apodized Floquet engineering techniques which expand the accessible phase diagram by five orders of magnitude. This kicked quantum quasicrystal exhibits a rich phase diagram including not only fully localized and fully delocalized phases but also an extended region comprising an intricate nested pattern of localized, delocalized, and multifractal states. Mapping transport properties throughout the phase diagram, we observe disorder-driven re-entrant delocalization and sub-ballistic transport, and present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena based on eigenstate multifractality. These results open up the exploration of new states of matter characterized by an intricate interplay of fractal structure and quantum dynamics.

Probability transport on the Fock space of a disordered quantum spin chain

Isabel Creed, David E. Logan, Sthitadhi Roy

Within the broad theme of understanding the dynamics of disordered quantum many-body systems, one of the simplest questions one can ask is, given an initial state, how does it evolve in time on the associated Fock-space graph, in terms of the distribution of probabilities thereon? A detailed quantitative description of the temporal evolution of out-of-equilibrium disordered quantum states and probability transport on the Fock space is our central aim here. We investigate it in the context of a disordered quantum spin chain, which hosts a disorder-driven many-body localization transition. Real-time dynamics/probability transport is shown to exhibit a rich phenomenology, which is markedly different between the ergodic and many-body localized phases. The dynamics is, for example, found to be strongly inhomogeneous at intermediate times in both phases, but while it gives way to homogeneity at long times in the ergodic phase, the dynamics remain inhomogeneous and multifractal in nature for arbitrarily long times in the localized phase. Similarly, we show that an appropriately defined dynamical lengthscale on the Fock-space graph is directly related to the local spin autocorrelation, and as such sheds light on the (anomalous) decay of the autocorrelation in the ergodic phase, and lack of it in the localized phase.

Multifractality of correlated two-particle bound states in quasiperiodic chains

Diana Thongjaomayum, Sergej Flach A, Alexei Andreanov

We consider the quasiperiodic Aubry-Andr\'e chain in the insulating regime with localized single-particle states. Adding local interaction leads to the emergence of extended correlated two-particle bound states. We analyze the nature of these states, including their multifractality properties. We use a projected Green function method to compute numerically participation numbers of eigenstates and analyze their dependence on the energy and the system size. We then perform a scaling analysis. We observe multifractality of correlated extended two-particle bound states, which we confirm independently through exact diagonalization.

Emergence of non-ergodic multifractal quantum states in geometrical fractals

F. Salvati, Mikhail I. Katsnelson, Andrey A. Bagrov

Eigenstate multifractality, a hallmark of non-interacting disordered metals, which may also be observed in many-body localized states, is characterized by anomalous slow dynamics and appears relevant for many areas of quantum physics, from measurement-driven systems to superconductivity. We propose a novel approach to achieve non-ergodic multifractal states (NEMs) without disorder by iteratively introducing defects into a crystal lattice, reshaping it from a plain structure into a fractal geometry. By comprehensive analysis of the Sierpiński gasket case, we find robust evidence of the emergence of NEMs that go beyond the conventional classification of quantum states and designate new pathways for quantum transport studies. We discuss potential experimental signatures of these states.
