Abstract

We consider the quasiperiodic Aubry-Andr\'e chain in the insulating regime with localized single-particle states. Adding local interaction leads to the emergence of extended correlated two-particle bound states. We analyze the nature of these states, including their multifractality properties. We use a projected Green function method to compute numerically participation numbers of eigenstates and analyze their dependence on the energy and the system size. We then perform a scaling analysis. We observe multifractality of correlated extended two-particle bound states, which we confirm independently through exact diagonalization.

Correlated metallic two-particle bound states in quasiperiodic chains

Sergej Flach A, Mikhail Ivanchenko, Рамаз Хомерики

Single-particle states in a chain with quasiperiodic potential show a metal-insulator transition upon the change of the potential strength. We consider two particles with local interaction in the single-particle insulating regime. The two-particle states change from being localized to delocalized upon an increase of the interaction strength to a nonperturbative finite value. At even larger interaction strength the states become localized again. This transition of two-particle bound states into correlated metallic ones is due to a resonant mixing of the noninteracting two-particle eigenstates. In the discovered correlated metal states two particles move coherently together through the whole chain.

Signatures of multifractality in a periodically driven interacting Aubry-André model

Madhumita Sarkar, Roopayan Ghosh, Arnab Sen +1 more

We study the many-body localization (MBL) transition of Floquet eigenstates in a driven, interacting fermionic chain with an incommensurate Aubry-Andr\'e potential and a time-periodic hopping amplitude as a function of the drive frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$ using exact diagonalization (ED). We find that the nature of the Floquet eigenstates change from ergodic to Floquet-MBL with increasing frequency; moreover, for a significant range of intermediate ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$, the Floquet eigenstates exhibit nontrivial fractal dimensions. We find a possible transition from the ergodic to this multifractal phase followed by a gradual crossover to the MBL phase as the drive frequency is increased. We also study the fermion autocorrelation function, entanglement entropy, normalized participation ratio (NPR), fermion transport, and the inverse participation ratio (IPR) as a function of ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$. We show that the autocorrelation, fermion transport, and NPR display qualitatively different characteristics (compared to their behavior in the ergodic and MBL regions) for the range of ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$ which supports multifractal eigenstates. In contrast, the entanglement growth in this frequency range tend to have similar features as in the MBL regime; its rate of growth is controlled by ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$. Our analysis thus indicates that the multifractal nature of Floquet-MBL eigenstates can be detected by studying autocorrelation function and fermionic transport of these driven chains. We support our numerical results with a semianalytic expression of the Floquet Hamiltonian obtained using Floquet perturbation theory (FPT) and discuss possible experiments which can test our predictions.

Many-body critical phase in a quasiperiodic chain and dynamical Widom lines in Fock-space properties

Nilanjan Roy, Subroto Mukerjee, Sumilan Banerjee

We study a quasiperiodic model in one dimension, namely the extended Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper (EAAH) chain, that realizes a critical phase comprising entirely single-particle critical states in the noninteracting limit. In the presence of short-range interactions, the noninteracting critical phase transforms to a many-body critical (MBC) phase, separated by lines of MBC-ergodic, MBC-many-body localized (MBL) and ergodic-MBL phase transitions that meet at a triple point. We elucidate the unusual characteristics of the MBC phase compared to the ergodic and MBL phases through the localization properties of the excitations in real space and Fock space (FS), and the eigenstate inverse participation ratio (IPR). We show that the MBC phase, like the MBL phase, is well described by a multifractal scaling of the IPR and a linear finite-size scaling ansatz near the transition to the ergodic and MBL phases. However, the MBC phase, at the same time, exhibits delocalization of all single-particle excitations and a system-size-dependent Fock-space localization length, analogous to the ergodic phase. Remarkably, we find evidence of unusual Widom lines on the phase diagram in the form of lines of pronounced peaks or dips in the FS localization properties inside the MBC and MBL phases. These Widom lines either emerge as a continuation of the precursor phase transition line terminating at the triple point, or originate from a phase boundary.

Localization, multifractality, and many-body localization in periodically kicked quasiperiodic lattices

Yu Zhang, Bozhen Zhou, Haiping Hu +1 more

We study the combined effect of quasiperiodic disorder, driven, and interaction in the periodically kicked Aubry-Andr\'e model. In the noninteracting limit, by analyzing the quasienergy spectrum statistics, we verify the existence of a dynamical localization transition in the high-frequency region, whereas the spectrum statistics becomes intricate in the low-frequency region due to the emergence of the extended/localized-to-multifractal edges in the quasienergy spectrum, which separate the multifractal states from the extended (localized) states. When the interaction is introduced, we find the periodically kicked incommensurate potential can lead to a transition from the ergodic to many-body-localization phase in the high-frequency region. However, the many-body localization phase vanishes in the low-frequency region even for the strong quasiperiodic disorder. Our studies demonstrate that the periodically kicked Aubry-Andr\'e model displays rich dynamical phenomena and the driving frequency plays an important role in the formation of many-body localization in addition to the disorder strength.

Fractal quasicondensation in one dimension

Flavio Elias Riche, Miguel Gonçalves, Bruno Amorim +2 more

We unveil a mechanism for quasicondensation of hard-core bosons in the presence of quasiperiodicity-induced multifractal single-particle states. The observed phase, here dubbed a fractal quasicondensate, is characterized by natural orbitals with multifractal properties and by an occupancy of the lowest natural orbital, ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{0}\ensuremath{\simeq}{L}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, which grows with system size but with a nonuniversal scaling exponent, $\ensuremath{\gamma}<1/2$. In contrast to fractal quasicondensates obtained when the chemical potential lies in a region of multifractal single-particle states, placing the chemical potential in regions of localized or delocalized states yields, respectively, no condensation or the usual 1D quasicondensation with $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1/2$. Our findings are established by studying one-dimensional hard-core bosons subjected to various quasiperiodic potentials, including the well-known Aubry-Andr\'e model, employing a mapping to noninteracting fermions that allows for numerically exact results. We discuss how to test our findings in state-of-the-art ultracold atom experiments.

Many-body localization in a quasiperiodic Fibonacci chain

Nicolas Macé, Nicolas Laflorencie, Fabien Alet

We study the many-body localization (MBL) properties of a chain of interacting fermions subject to a quasiperiodic potential such that the non-interacting chain is always delocalized and displays multifractality. Contrary to naive expectations, adding interactions in this systems does not enhance delocalization, and a MBL transition is observed. Due to the local properties of the quasiperiodic potential, the MBL phase presents specific features, such as additional peaks in the density distribution. We furthermore investigate the fate of multifractality in the ergodic phase for low potential values. Our analysis is based on exact numerical studies of eigenstates and dynamical properties after a quench.
