Abstract

We consider the many-body time evolution of weakly interacting bosons in the mean field regime for initial coherent states. We show that bounded k-particle operators, corresponding to dependent random variables, satisfy both a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem.

A Central Limit Theorem in Many-Body Quantum Dynamics

Gérard Ben Arous, Kay Kirkpatrick, Benjamin Schlein

We study the many body quantum evolution of bosonic systems in the mean field limit. The dynamics is known to be well approximated by the Hartree equation. So far, the available results have the form of a law of large numbers. In this paper we go one step further and we show that the fluctuations around the Hartree evolution satisfy a central limit theorem. Interestingly, the variance of the limiting Gaussian distribution is determined by a time-dependent Bogoliubov transformation describing the dynamics of initial coherent states in a Fock space representation of the system.

A Large Deviation Principle in Many-Body Quantum Dynamics

Kay Kirkpatrick, Simone Rademacher, Benjamin Schlein

We consider the many-body quantum evolution of a factorized initial data, in the mean-field regime. We show that fluctuations around the limiting Hartree dynamics satisfy large deviation estimates that are consistent with central limit theorems that have been established in the last years.

Multivariate central limit theorem in quantum dynamics

Simon Buchholz, Chiara Saffirio, Benjamin Schlein

We consider the time evolution of N bosons in the mean field regime for factorized initial data. In the limit of large N, the many body evolution can be approximated by the non-linear Hartree equation. In this paper we are interested in the fluctuations around the Hartree dynamics. We choose k self-adjoint one-particle operators O 1,…,O k on $L^{2} ({\mathbb{R}}^{3})$ , and we average their action over the N-particles. We show that, for every fixed $t \in{\mathbb{R}}$ , expectations of products of functions of the averaged observables approach, as N→∞, expectations with respect to a complex Gaussian measure, whose covariance matrix can be expressed in terms of a Bogoliubov transformation describing the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around the mean field Hartree evolution. If the operators O 1,…,O k commute, the Gaussian measure is real and positive, and we recover a "classical" multivariate central limit theorem. All our results give explicit bounds on the rate of the convergence.

Large Deviations for the Ground State of Weakly Interacting Bose Gases

Simone Rademacher

Abstract We consider the ground state of a Bose gas of N particles on the three-dimensional unit torus in the mean-field regime that is known to exhibit Bose–Einstein condensation. Bounded one-particle operators with law given through the interacting Bose gas’ ground state correspond to dependent random variables due to the bosons’ correlation. We prove that in the limit $$N \rightarrow \infty $$ N → ∞ bounded one-particle operators with law given by the ground state satisfy large deviation estimates. We derive a lower and an upper bound on the rate function that match up to second order and that are characterized by quantum fluctuations around the condensate.

Convergence in the mean-field limit for two species of bosonic particles

Megan Richards

The dynamics of a quantum system with a large number $N$ of identical bosonic particles interacting by means of weak two-body potentials can be simplified by using mean-field equations in which all interactions to any one body have been replaced with an average or effective interaction in the mean-field limit $N \rightarrow \infty$. In order to show these mean-field equations are accurate, one needs to show convergence of the quantum $N$-body dynamics to these equations in the mean-field limit. Previous results on convergence in the mean field limit have been derived for certain initial conditions in the case of one species of bosonic particles, but no results have yet been shown for multi-species. In this thesis, we look at a quantum bosonic system with two species of particles. For this system, we derive a formula for the rate of convergence in the mean-field limit in the case of an initial coherent state, and we also show convergence in the mean-field limit for the case of an initial factorized state. The analysis for two species can then be extended to multiple species.

On the general principle of the mean-field approximation for many-boson dynamics

Clément Rouffort

The mean-field approximations of many-boson dynamics are known to be effective in many physical relevant situations. The mathematical justifications of such approximations rely generally on specific considerations which depend too much on the model and on the initial states of the system which are required to be well-prepared. In this article, using the method of Wigner measures, we prove in a fairly complete generality the accuracy of the mean-field approximation. Roughly speaking, we show that the dynamics of a many-boson system are well approximated, in the limit of a large number of particles, by a one particle mean-field equation if the following general principles are satisfied: $\bullet$ The Hamiltonian is in a mean-field regime (i.e.: The interaction and the free energy parts are of the same order with respect to the number of particles). $\bullet$ The interaction is relatively compact with respect to a one particle and it is dominated by the free energy part. $\bullet$ There exists at most one weak solution for the mean-field equation for each initial condition. The convergence towards the mean field limit is described in terms of Wigner (probability) measures and it holds for any initial quantum states with a finite free energy average. The main novelty of this article lies in the use of fine properties of uniqueness for the Liouville equations in infinite dimensional spaces.
