Abstract

We present a rigorous but elementary index theory for a class of one-dimensional systems of interacting (and possibly disordered) fermions with U(1)⋊Z2 symmetry defined on the infinite chain. The class includes the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model [Su et al., “Solitons in polyacetylene,” Phys. Rev. Lett. 42, 1698 (1979); Su et al., “Soliton excitations in polyacetylene,” Phys. Rev. B 22, 2099 (1983); and Asbóth et al., A Short Course on Topological Insulators: Band-Structure Topology and Edge States in One and Two Dimensions, Lecture Notes in Physics (Springer, 2016)] as a special case. For any locally unique gapped (fixed-charge) ground state of a model in the class, we define a Z2 index in terms of the sign of the expectation value of the local twist operator. We prove that the index is topological in the sense that it is invariant under continuous modification of models in the class with a locally unique (fixed-charge) gapped ground state. This establishes that any path of models in the class that connects the two extreme cases of the SSH model must go through a phase transition. Our rigorous Z2 classification is believed to be optimal for the class of models considered here. We also show an interesting duality of the index and prove that any topologically nontrivial model in the class has a gapless edge excitation above the ground state when defined on the half-infinite chain. The results extend to other classes of models, including the extended Hubbard model. Our strategy to focus on the expectation value of local unitary operators makes the theory intuitive and conceptually simple. This paper also contains a careful discussion about the notion of unique gapped ground states of a particle system on the infinite chain. Weakly interacting one-dimensional topological insulators: A bosonization approach

Polina Matveeva, Dmitri B. Gutman, Sam T. Carr

We investigate the topological properties of one-dimensional weakly interacting topological insulators using bosonization. To do that we study the topological edge states that emerge at the edges of a model realized by a strong impurity or at the boundary between topologically distinct phases. In the bosonic model, the edge states are manifested as degenerate bosonic kinks at the boundaries. We first illustrate this idea on the example of the interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain. We compute the localization length of the edge states as the width of an edge soliton that occurs in the SSH model in the presence of a strong impurity. Next, we examine models of two capacitively coupled SSH chains that can be either identical or in distinct topological phases. We find that weak Hubbard interaction reduces the ground-state degeneracy in the topological phase of identical chains. We then prove that, similarly to the noninteracting model, the degeneracy of the edge states in the interacting case is protected by chiral symmetry. We then study topological insulators built from two SSH chains with interchain hopping that represent models of different chiral symmetric universality classes. We demonstrate in bosonic language that the topological index of a weakly coupled model is determined by the type of interchain coupling, invariant under one of two possible chiral symmetry operators. Finally, we show that a general one-dimensional model in a phase with topological index $\ensuremath{\nu}$ is equivalent at low energies to a theory of at least $\ensuremath{\nu}$ SSH chains. We illustrate this idea on the example of an SSH model with longer-range hopping.

The equivalence of topological indices for $\mathrm{U}(1)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric quantum spin chains

Hal Tasaki

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in quantum spin chains are distinguished by topological indices. Ogata's operator-algebraic indices apply to a broad range of symmetry classes without requiring continuous symmetry, whereas the elementary twist index of Tasaki requires $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry. We prove their equivalence in the common setting of integer-spin chains with on-site $\mathrm{U}(1)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and a symmetric locally-unique gapped ground state, without assuming translation invariance or a matrix product representation. A charge-fluctuation estimate yields a strong-limit construction of half-chain rotations with their phases fixed. An exact group commutator identity then identifies the Ogata index with the limit of local twist expectations and gives an explicit error bound. This provides a computable formula for the index when a lower bound on the gap and the relevant ground-state expectations are available. Combining the equivalence with a recent boundary-field gap theorem of OpenAI and our earlier twist-index calculation, we obtain a spin-rotation-invariant locally-unique gapped ground state of the infinite $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with both indices equal to $-1$, without assuming infinite-volume uniqueness. The author formulated the problem and proposed the basic strategy, while ChatGPT Astra made substantial contributions to the development of the proof.

Topological Phase Transition and Z2 Index for S=1 Quantum Spin Chains

Hal Tasaki

We study S=1 quantum spin systems on the infinite chain with short ranged Hamiltonians that have a certain rotational and discrete symmetry. We define a Z_{2} index for any gapped unique ground state, and prove that it is invariant under a smooth deformation. By using the index, we provide the first rigorous proof of the existence of a "topological" phase transition, which cannot be characterized by any conventional order parameters, between the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model and trivial models. This rigorously establishes that the AKLT model is in a nontrivial symmetry protected topological phase.

Exploring interacting topological insulator in the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Xiaofan Zhou, Jian-Song Pan, Suotang Jia

Exploring topological phases in interacting systems is a challenging task. We investigate many-body topological physics of interacting fermions in an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, which extends the two sublattices of the SSH model into four sublattices and thus is dubbed the SSH4 model, based on the density-matrix renormalization-group numerical method. The interaction-driven phase transition from the topological insulator phase to the charge density wave (CDW) phase can be identified by analyzing the variations of the entanglement spectrum, entanglement entropies, energy gaps, CDW order parameter, and fidelity. We map the global phase diagram of the many-body ground state, which contains nontrivial topological insulator, trivial insulator, and CDW phases, respectively. In contrast to the interacting SSH model, in which the phase transitions to the CDW phase are argued to be first-order phase transitions, the phase transitions between the CDW phase and topologically trivial or nontrivial phases are shown to be continuous phase transitions. Finally, we also show the phase diagram of the interacting spinful SSH4 model, where the attractive (repulsive) on-site spin interaction amplifies (suppresses) the CDW phase. The models analyzed here can be implemented with ultracold atoms on optical superlattices.

Observation of the topological soliton state in the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model

Eric J. Meier, Fangzhao Alex An, Bryce Gadway

Abstract The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model, which captures the most striking transport properties of the conductive organic polymer trans -polyacetylene, provides perhaps the most basic model system supporting topological excitations. The alternating bond pattern of polyacetylene chains is captured by the bipartite sublattice structure of the SSH model, emblematic of one-dimensional chiral symmetric topological insulators. This structure supports two distinct nontrivial topological phases, which, when interfaced with one another or with a topologically trivial phase, give rise to topologically protected, dispersionless boundary states. Here, using 87 Rb atoms in a momentum-space lattice, we realize fully tunable condensed matter Hamiltonians, allowing us to probe the dynamics and equilibrium properties of the SSH model. We report on the experimental quantum simulation of this model and observation of the localized topological soliton state through quench dynamics, phase-sensitive injection, and adiabatic preparation.

Topological bound states in interacting Su–Schrieffer–Heeger rings

A M Marques, R G Dias

We study two-particle states in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with periodic boundary conditions and nearest-neighbor (NN) interactions. The system is mapped into a problem of a single particle in a two-dimensional (2D) SSH lattice with potential walls along specific edges. The 2D SSH model has a trivial Chern number but a non-trivial Zak's phase, the one-dimensional (1D) topological invariant, along specific directions of the lattice, which allow for the presence of topological edge states. Using center-of-mass and relative coordinates, we calculate the energy spectrum of these two-body states for strong interactions and find that, aside from the expected appearance of doublon bands, two extra in-gap bands are present. These are identified as bands of topological states localized at the edges of the internal coordinate, the relative distance between the two particles. As such, the topological states reported here are intrinsically many-body in what concerns their real space manifestation, having no counterpart in single-particle states derived from effective models. Finally, we compare the effect of Hubbard interactions with that of NN interactions to show how the presence of the topological bound states is specific to the latter case.
