Abstract

Abstract We study the parallel transport of modular Hamiltonians encoding entanglement properties of a state. In the case of 2d CFT, we consider a change of state through action with a suitable diffeomorphism on the circle: one that diagonalizes the adjoint action of the modular Hamiltonian. These vector fields exhibit kinks at the interval boundary, thus together with their central extension they differ from usual elements of the Virasoro algebra. The Berry curvature associated to state-changing parallel transport is the Kirillov-Kostant symplectic form on an associated coadjoint orbit, one which differs appreciably from known Virasoro orbits. We find that the boundary parallel transport process computes a bulk symplectic form for a Euclidean geometry obtained from the backreaction of a cosmic brane, with Dirichlet boundary conditions at the location of the brane. We propose that this gives a reasonable definition for the symplectic form on an entanglement wedge.

Changing states in holography: From modular Berry curvature to the bulk symplectic form

Bartłomiej Czech, Jan De Boer A, Ricardo Espíndola +3 more

We present a new perspective on bulk reconstruction using Berry phases in the boundary conformal field theory (CFT). Our parallel transport of modular Hamiltonians is associated to a trajectory in the space of states, which we obtain from the insertion of a source in the Euclidean path integral. Using a modular version of the extrapolate dictionary and the equivalence between modular flow in the boundary and the bulk, we show that the expectation value of the modular Berry curvature on the boundary agrees with an appropriately defined bulk symplectic form associated to the entanglement wedge. In addition, we derive a quantum information metric on the space of density matrices from the Berry curvature, which is related to the canonical energy in the bulk. We also explore the case where a state change reduces to a shape change, uncovering the coadjoint orbit structure of kinematic space in higher dimensions.

The holographic dual of the entanglement wedge symplectic form

Josh Kirklin

Abstract: In this paper, we find the boundary dual of the symplectic form for the bulk fields in any entanglement wedge. The key ingredient is Uhlmann holonomy, which is a notion of parallel transport of purifications of density matrices based on a maximisation of transition probabilities. Using a replica trick, we compute this holonomy for curves of reduced states in boundary subregions of holographic QFTs at large N, subject to changes of operator insertions on the boundary. It is shown that the Berry phase along Uhlmann parallel paths may be written as the integral of an abelian connection whose curvature is the symplectic form of the entanglement wedge. This generalises previous work on holographic Berry curvature.

Virasoro algebra from modular Hamiltonians

Suchetan Das, Bobby Ezhuthachan, Somnath Porey +1 more

We construct an infinite class of eigen modes with integer eigenvalues for the Vacuum Modular Hamiltonian of a single interval in 2d CFT. An interesting feature of this construction is that these eigen modes together with the Modular Hamiltonian form a Virasoro algebra. The construction is geometric in the sense that it is intimately related to the partition of the interval ($N$) into subintervals ($N'$) and ($N''$). In particular, we show that given a set consisting of a causal diamond associated to an interval ($N$) and its sub-intervals ($N'$, $N''$) on a constant time slice in a 2d CFT, one can construct modular eigen modes, satisfying the Virasoro algebra, which we call the 'modular Virasoro algebra'. For ($n=\pm 1, 0$), the corresponding generators are related to the modular Hamiltonians of the interval and its sub intervals. Another interesting feature of our construction is that OPE blocks associated with the interval $N$ transform as the modes of the primary highest weight field under transformations generated by these 'modular Virasoro generators'. We end with some comments on the bulk dual of the modular Virasoro algebra.

Modular parallel transport of multiple intervals in 1+1-dimensional free fermion theory

Bowen Chen, Bartłomiej Czech, Ling-Yan Hung +1 more

Abstract Modular parallel transport is a generalization of Berry phases, applied to modular (entanglement) Hamiltonians. Here we initiate the study of modular parallel transport for disjoint field theory regions. We study modular parallel transport in the kinematic space of multi-interval regions in the vacuum of 1+1-dimensional free fermion theory — one of the few theories for which modular Hamiltonians on disjoint regions are known. We compute explicitly the generators of modular parallel transport, and explain why their relatively simple form follows from a half-sided modular inclusion. We also compute explicitly the curvature two-form of modular parallel transport. We contrast all calculations with the expected behavior of modular parallel transport in holographic theories, emphasizing the role of non-local terms that couple distinct intervals.

A modular sewing kit for entanglement wedges

Bartłomiej Czech, Jan De Boer A, Dongsheng Ge +1 more

A bstract We relate the Riemann curvature of a holographic spacetime to an entangle- ment property of the dual CFT state: the Berry curvature of its modular Hamiltonians. The modular Berry connection encodes the relative bases of nearby CFT subregions while its bulk dual, restricted to the code subspace, relates the edge-mode frames of the cor- responding entanglement wedges. At leading order in 1 /N and for sufficiently smooth HRRT surfaces, the modular Berry connection simply sews together the orthonormal co- ordinate systems covering neighborhoods of HRRT surfaces. This geometric perspective on entanglement is a promising new tool for connecting the dynamics of entanglement and gravitation.
