Dynamics of the order parameter statistics in the long range Ising model

Abstract

We study the relaxation of the local ferromagnetic order in the transverse field quantum Ising chain with power-law decaying interactions \sim 1/r^\alpha ∼ 1 / r α . We prepare the system in the GHZ state and study the time evolution of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the order parameter within a block of \ell ℓ when quenching the transverse field. The model is known to support long range order at finite temperature for \alpha\leq 2.0 α ≤ 2.0 . In this regime, quasi-localized topological magnetic defects are expected to strongly affect the equilibration of the full probability distribution. We highlight different dynamical regimes where gaussification mechanism may be slowed down by confinement and eventually breaks. We further study the PDF dynamics induced by changing the effective dimensionality of the system; we mimic this by quenching the range of the interactions. As a matter of fact, the behavior of the system crucially depends on the value of \alpha α governing the unitary evolution.

Relaxation of the order-parameter statistics and dynamical confinement

Riccardo J. Valencia-Tortora, Pasquale Calabrese, Mario Collura

Abstract We study the relaxation of the local ferromagnetic order in the quantum Ising chain in a slant field with both longitudinal and transverse components. After preparing the system in a fully polarised state, we analyse the time evolution of the entire probability distribution function (PDF) of the magnetisation within a block of ℓ spins. We first analyse the effect of confinement on the Gaussification of the PDF for large ℓ , showing that the melting of initial order is suppressed when the longitudinal field is aligned to initial magnetisation while it is speed up when it is in the opposite direction. Then we study the thermalisation dynamics. In the paramagnetic region, the PDF quickly shows thermal features. Conversely, in the ferromagnetic phase, when confinement takes place, the relaxation suffers a typical slowing down which depends on the interplay between the strength of the longitudinal field, the density of excitations, and the direction of the initial polarisation. Even when the initial magnetisation is aligned oppositely to the longitudinal field, confinement prevents thermalisation in the accessible timescale, as it is neatly bared by the PDF.

Thermalization of long range Ising model in different dynamical regimes: A full counting statistics approach

Nishan Ranabhat, Mario Collura

We study the thermalization of the transverse field Ising chain with a power law decaying interaction \sim 1/r^{\alpha} ∼ 1 / r α following a global quantum quench of the transverse field in two different dynamical regimes. The thermalization behavior is quantified by comparing the full probability distribution function (PDF) of the evolving states with the corresponding thermal state given by the canonical Gibbs ensemble (CGE). To this end, we used the matrix product state (MPS)-based Time Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP) algorithm to simulate both real time evolution following a global quantum quench and the finite temperature density operator. We observe that thermalization is strongly suppressed in the region with strong confinement for all interaction strengths \alpha α , whereas thermalization occurs in the region with weak confinement.

Relaxation of the order-parameter statistics in the Ising quantum chain

Mario Collura

We study the out-of-equilibrium probability distribution function of the local order parameter in the transverse field Ising quantum chain. Starting from a fully polarised state, the relaxation of the ferromagnetic order is analysed: we obtain a full analytical description of the late-time stationary distribution by means of a remarkable relation to the partition function of a 3-states classical model. Accordingly, depending on the phase whereto the post-quench Hamiltonian belongs, the probability distribution may locally retain memories of the initial long-range order. When quenching deep in the broken-symmetry phase, we show that the stationary order-parameter statistics is indeed related to that of the ground state. We highlight this connection by inspecting the ground-state equilibrium properties, where we propose an effective description based on the block-diagonal approximation of the n n -point spin correlation functions.

Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Spin Chains with Long-Range Interactions: Merging Different Concepts of Nonequilibrium Criticality

Bojan Žunkovič, Markus Heyl, Michael Knap +1 more

We theoretically study the dynamics of a transverse-field Ising chain with power-law decaying interactions characterized by an exponent α, which can be experimentally realized in ion traps. We focus on two classes of emergent dynamical critical phenomena following a quantum quench from a ferromagnetic initial state: The first one manifests in the time-averaged order parameter, which vanishes at a critical transverse field. We argue that such a transition occurs only for long-range interactions α≤2. The second class corresponds to the emergence of time-periodic singularities in the return probability to the ground-state manifold which is obtained for all values of α and agrees with the order parameter transition for α≤2. We characterize how the two classes of nonequilibrium criticality correspond to each other and give a physical interpretation based on the symmetry of the time-evolved quantum states.

Long time dynamics following a quench in an integrable quantum spin chain: Local versus nonlocal operators and effective thermal behavior

Davide Rossini, Sei Suzuki, Giuseppe Mussardo +2 more

We study the dynamics of the quantum Ising chain following a zero-temperature quench of the transverse field strength. Focusing on the behavior of two-point spin correlation functions, we show that the correlators of the order parameter display an effective asymptotic thermal behavior; i.e., they decay exponentially to zero with a phase coherence rate and a correlation length dictated by the equilibrium law with an effective temperature set by the energy of the initial state. On the contrary, the two-point correlation functions of the transverse magnetization or the density-of-kinks operator decay as a power law and do not exhibit thermal behavior. We argue that the different behavior is linked to the locality of the corresponding operator with respect to the quasiparticles of the model: nonlocal operators, such as the order parameter, behave thermally, while local ones do not. We study which features of the two-point correlators are a consequence of the integrability of the model by analyzing their robustness with respect to a sufficiently strong integrability-breaking term.

Prethermalization and persistent order in the absence of a thermal phase transition

Jad C. Halimeh, Valentin Zauner-Stauber, Ian P. McCulloch +3 more

We numerically study the dynamics after a parameter quench in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with long-range interactions ($\ensuremath{\propto}1/{r}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with distance $r$), for finite chains and also directly in the thermodynamic limit. In nonequilibrium, i.e., before the system settles into a thermal state, we find a long-lived regime that is characterized by a prethermal value of the magnetization, which in general differs from its thermal value. We find that the ferromagnetic phase is stabilized dynamically: as a function of the quench parameter, the prethermal magnetization shows a transition between a symmetry-broken and a symmetric phase, even for those values of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ for which no finite-temperature transition occurs in equilibrium. The dynamical critical point is shifted with respect to the equilibrium one, and the shift is found to depend on $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ as well as on the quench parameters.
