Abstract

We numerically study the dynamics after a parameter quench in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with long-range interactions ($\ensuremath{\propto}1/{r}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with distance $r$), for finite chains and also directly in the thermodynamic limit. In nonequilibrium, i.e., before the system settles into a thermal state, we find a long-lived regime that is characterized by a prethermal value of the magnetization, which in general differs from its thermal value. We find that the ferromagnetic phase is stabilized dynamically: as a function of the quench parameter, the prethermal magnetization shows a transition between a symmetry-broken and a symmetric phase, even for those values of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ for which no finite-temperature transition occurs in equilibrium. The dynamical critical point is shifted with respect to the equilibrium one, and the shift is found to depend on $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ as well as on the quench parameters.

Concurrence of dynamical phase transitions at finite temperature in the fully connected transverse-field Ising model

Johannes Lang, Bernhard Frank, Jad C. Halimeh

We construct the finite-temperature dynamical phase diagram of the fully connected transverse-field Ising model from the vantage point of two disparate concepts of dynamical criticality. An analytical derivation of the classical dynamics and exact diagonalization simulations are used to study the dynamics after a quantum quench in the system prepared in a thermal equilibrium state. The different dynamical phases characterized by the type of nonanalyticities that emerge in an appropriately defined Loschmidt-echo return rate directly correspond to the dynamical phases determined by the spontaneous breaking of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry in the long-time steady state. The dynamical phase diagram is qualitatively different depending on whether the initial thermal state is ferromagnetic or paramagnetic. Whereas the former leads to a dynamical phase diagram that can be directly related to its equilibrium counterpart, the latter gives rise to a divergent dynamical critical temperature at vanishing final transverse-field strength.

Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Spin Chains with Long-Range Interactions: Merging Different Concepts of Nonequilibrium Criticality

Bojan Žunkovič, Markus Heyl, Michael Knap +1 more

We theoretically study the dynamics of a transverse-field Ising chain with power-law decaying interactions characterized by an exponent α, which can be experimentally realized in ion traps. We focus on two classes of emergent dynamical critical phenomena following a quantum quench from a ferromagnetic initial state: The first one manifests in the time-averaged order parameter, which vanishes at a critical transverse field. We argue that such a transition occurs only for long-range interactions α≤2. The second class corresponds to the emergence of time-periodic singularities in the return probability to the ground-state manifold which is obtained for all values of α and agrees with the order parameter transition for α≤2. We characterize how the two classes of nonequilibrium criticality correspond to each other and give a physical interpretation based on the symmetry of the time-evolved quantum states.

Impact of nonequilibrium fluctuations on prethermal dynamical phase transitions in long-range interacting spin chains

Alessio Lerose, Bojan Žunkovič, Jamir Marino +2 more

We study the nonequilibrium phase diagram and the dynamical phase transitions occurring during the prethermalization of nonintegrable quantum spin chains, subject to either quantum quenches or linear ramps of a relevant control parameter. We consider spin systems in which long-range ferromagnetic interactions compete with short-range, integrability-breaking terms. We capture the prethermal stages of the nonequilibrium evolution via a time-dependent spin-wave expansion at leading order in the spin-wave density. In order to access regimes with strong integrability breaking, instead, we perform numerical simulations based on the time-dependent variational principle with matrix product states. By investigating a large class of quantum spin models, we demonstrate that nonequilibrium fluctuations can significantly affect the dynamics near critical points of the phase diagram, resulting in a chaotic evolution of the collective order parameter, akin to the dynamics of a classical particle in a multiple-well potential subject to quantum friction. We also elucidate the signature of this novel dynamical phase on the time-dependent correlation functions of the local order parameter. We finally establish a connection with the notion of dynamical quantum phase transition associated with a possible nonanalytic behavior of the return probability amplitude, or Loschmidt echo, showing that the latter displays cusps whenever the order parameter vanishes during its real-time evolution.

Prethermalization from a low-density Holstein-Primakoff expansion

Matteo Marcuzzi, Jamir Marino, Andrea Gambassi +1 more

We consider the nonequilibrium dynamics arising after a quench of the transverse magnetic field of a quantum Ising chain, together with the sudden switch-on of a long-range interaction term. The dynamics after the quantum quench is mapped onto a fully connected model of hard-core bosons, after a suitable combination of a Holstein-Primakoff transformation and of a low-density expansion in the quasiparticles injected by the quench. This mapping holds for a broad class of initial states and for quenches which do not cross the critical point of the transverse field Ising model. We then study the algebraic relaxation in time of a number of observables towards a metastable, prethermal state, which becomes the asymptotic steady state in the thermodynamic limit.

Study of the Nonequilibrium Critical Quenching and Annealing Dynamics for the Long-Range Ising Model

D. E. Rodríguez, M. A. Bab, Ezequiel Vicente Albano

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are employed in order to study the dynamic critical behavior of the one-dimensional Ising magnet, with algebraically decaying long-range interactions of the form $\frac{1}{r^{d+σ}}$, with $σ=0.75$. The critical temperature, as well as the critical exponents, is evaluated from the power-law behavior of suitable physical observables when the system is quenched from uncorrelated states, corresponding to infinite temperature, to the critical point. These results are compared with those obtained from the dynamic evolution of the system when it is suddenly annealed at the critical point from the ordered state. Also, the critical temperature in the infinite interaction limit is obtained by means of a finite-range scaling analysis of data measured with different cutoffs of the interaction range. All the estimated static critical exponents ($γ/ν$, $β/ν$, and $1/ν$) are in good agreement with Renormalization Group (RG) predictions and previously reported numerical data obtained under equilibrium conditions. It is found that the dynamic exponent $z$ is different for quenching and annealing experiments, most likely due to the influence of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition occurring at relatively similar algebraic decay of the interactions with $σ=1$. However, for annealing experiments the measured exponent $z$ is close to the RG predictions. On the other hand, the relevant exponents of the dynamic behavior ($z$ and $θ$) are slightly different than the RG predictions, most likely due to the fact that they may depend on the especific dynamics used (Metropolis in the present paper).

Critical behavior of the order parameter at the nonequilibrium phase transition of the Ising model

Bin Li, Chao Gao, Gao Xianlong +1 more

After a quench of transverse field, the asymptotic long-time state of the Ising model displays a transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phase as the post-quench field strength increases, which is revealed by the vanishing of the order parameter defined as the averaged magnetization over time. We estimate the critical behavior of the magnetization at this nonequilibrium phase transition by using the mean-field approximation. In the vicinity of the critical field, the magnetization vanishes as the inverse of a logarithmic function, which is significantly distinguished from the critical behavior of order parameter at the corresponding equilibrium phase transition, i.e. a power-law function.
