Coherent States for Fractional Powers of the Harmonic Oscillator Hamiltonian

Abstract

Inspired by special and general relativistic systems that can have Hamiltonians involving square roots or more general fractional powers, in this article, we address the question of how a suitable set of coherent states for such systems can be obtained. This becomes a relevant topic if the semiclassical sector of a given quantum theory is to be analysed. As a simple setup, we consider the toy model of a deparametrised system with one constraint that involves a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian operator, and we discuss two approaches to finding suitable coherent states for this system. In the first approach, we consider Dirac quantisation and group averaging, as have been used by Ashtekar et al., but only for integer powers of operators. Our generalisation to fractional powers yields in the case of the toy model a suitable set of coherent states. The second approach is inspired by coherent states based on a fractional Poisson distribution introduced by Laskin, which however turn out not to satisfy all properties to yield good semiclassical results for the operators considered here and in particular do not satisfy a resolution of identity as claimed. Therefore, we present a generalisation of the standard harmonic oscillator coherent states to states involving fractional labels, which approximate the fractional operators in our toy model semiclassically more accurately and satisfy a resolution of identity. In addition, motivated by the way the proof of the resolution of identity is performed, we consider these kind of coherent states also for the polymerised harmonic oscillator and discuss their semiclassical properties.

Truncated generalized coherent states

Filippo Giraldi, Francesco Mainardi

A generalization of the canonical coherent states of a quantum harmonic oscillator has been performed by requiring the conditions of normalizability, continuity in the label, and resolution of the identity operator with a positive weight function. Relying on this approach, in the present scenario, coherent states are generalized over the canonical or finite dimensional Fock space of the harmonic oscillator. A class of generalized coherent states is determined such that the corresponding distributions of the number of excitations depart from the Poisson statistics according to combinations of stretched exponential decays, power laws, and logarithmic forms. The analysis of the Mandel parameter shows that the generalized coherent states exhibit (non-classical) sub-Poissonian or super-Poissonian statistics of the number of excitations, based on the realization of determined constraints. Mittag-Leffler and Wright generalized coherent states are analyzed as particular cases.

Coherent states on the circle: semiclassical matrix elements in the context of Kummer functions and the Zak transformation

Kristina Giesel, David Winnekens

Abstract We extend former results for coherent states on the circle in the literature in two ways. On the one hand, we show that expectation values of fractional powers of momentum operators can be computed exactly analytically by means of Kummer’s confluent hypergeometric functions. Earlier, these expectation values have only been obtained by using suitable estimates. On the other hand, we consider the Zak transformation not only to map harmonic oscillator coherent states to coherent states on the circle as it has been discussed before, but we also use the properties of the Zak transformation to derive a relation between matrix elements with respect to coherent states in <?CDATA ${L}_{2}({\mathbb{R}})$?> L 2 ( R ) and L 2(S 1). This provides an alternative way for computing semiclassical matrix elements for coherent states on the circle. In certain aspects, this method simplifies the semiclassical computations in particular if one is only interested in the classical limit, that is the zeroth order term in the semiclassical expansion.

Coherent states of the asymmetric harmonic oscillator

Goce Chadzitaskos

We constructed formal coherent states for an asymmetric harmonic oscillator, where the asymmetry parameter is the square root of the ratio of spring constants. Although these states are constructed based on both Glauber's and Perelomov's approaches, in general they do not satisfy all the properties required for coherent states. Over time, the coherent states introduced in this way generally become incoherent. However, there are some specific parameters for the square root ratios of the spring constants $\frac{4k+1}{4l+1}$ or $\frac{4k+3}{4l+3}$. For these parameters it is possible to construct coherent states on the subspace of the Hilbert space of eigenstates. These coherent states keep their coherence during the time evolution. This case is also analyzed.

Coherent states for the relativistic harmonic oscillator

V. Aldaya, Julio Guerrero

Recently we have obtained, on the basis of a group approach to quantization, a Bargmann-Fock-like realization of the Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator as well as a generalized Bargmann transform relating fock wave functions and a set of relativistic Hermite polynomials. Nevertheless, the relativistic creation and annihilation operators satisfy typical relativistic commutation relations of the Lie product (vector-z, vector-z(sup dagger)) approximately equals Energy (an SL(2,R) algebra). Here we find higher-order polarization operators on the SL(2,R) group, providing canonical creation and annihilation operators satisfying the Lie product (vector-a, vector-a(sup dagger)) = identity vector 1, the eigenstates of which are 'true' coherent states.

Generalized coherent states and the quadratic Hamiltonian

Kanwarpreet S. Grewal

The idea of coherent states has proved very useful in the study of the quantum nature of electromagnetic radiation. Coherent states are also interesting because their evolution in time comes closest to classical dynamics. So they are the best approximation in quantum mechanics to classical behaviour. In recent years, attempts have been made to generalize the concept of coherent states to systems other than those made up of the simple harmonic oscillator (such as light). In one such attempt, Klauder introduces a set of physical criteria that generalized coherent states should have (Klauder J R 1996 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 29 L293). These criteria have been applied to the hydrogen atom and several other systems. In this paper, we apply Klauder's criteria to identify generalized coherent states for the quadratic Hamiltonian H = (f1a†a + f*2a2 + f2a†2). We check if two-photon coherent states of light satisfy these criteria. We find that they do not, which is expected: their non-classical properties are well known. We then use Klauder's criteria to find a set of states that are associated with the quadratic Hamiltonian. We find that these states too display non-classical behaviour even for large values of the quantum numbers. This non-classical behaviour is revealed in the form of sub-Poisson photon statistics. We will also briefly consider the one-photon Hamiltonian, apply Klauder's criteria to it and comment on its statistics.
