Coherent states on the circle: semiclassical matrix elements in the context of Kummer functions and the Zak transformation

Abstract

Abstract We extend former results for coherent states on the circle in the literature in two ways. On the one hand, we show that expectation values of fractional powers of momentum operators can be computed exactly analytically by means of Kummer’s confluent hypergeometric functions. Earlier, these expectation values have only been obtained by using suitable estimates. On the other hand, we consider the Zak transformation not only to map harmonic oscillator coherent states to coherent states on the circle as it has been discussed before, but we also use the properties of the Zak transformation to derive a relation between matrix elements with respect to coherent states in <?CDATA ${L}_{2}({\mathbb{R}})$?> L 2 ( R ) and L 2(S 1). This provides an alternative way for computing semiclassical matrix elements for coherent states on the circle. In certain aspects, this method simplifies the semiclassical computations in particular if one is only interested in the classical limit, that is the zeroth order term in the semiclassical expansion.

Coherent States for Fractional Powers of the Harmonic Oscillator Hamiltonian

Kristina Giesel, Almut Vetter

Inspired by special and general relativistic systems that can have Hamiltonians involving square roots or more general fractional powers, in this article, we address the question of how a suitable set of coherent states for such systems can be obtained. This becomes a relevant topic if the semiclassical sector of a given quantum theory is to be analysed. As a simple setup, we consider the toy model of a deparametrised system with one constraint that involves a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian operator, and we discuss two approaches to finding suitable coherent states for this system. In the first approach, we consider Dirac quantisation and group averaging, as have been used by Ashtekar et al., but only for integer powers of operators. Our generalisation to fractional powers yields in the case of the toy model a suitable set of coherent states. The second approach is inspired by coherent states based on a fractional Poisson distribution introduced by Laskin, which however turn out not to satisfy all properties to yield good semiclassical results for the operators considered here and in particular do not satisfy a resolution of identity as claimed. Therefore, we present a generalisation of the standard harmonic oscillator coherent states to states involving fractional labels, which approximate the fractional operators in our toy model semiclassically more accurately and satisfy a resolution of identity. In addition, motivated by the way the proof of the resolution of identity is performed, we consider these kind of coherent states also for the polymerised harmonic oscillator and discuss their semiclassical properties.

Wigner functions and coherent states for the quantum mechanics on a circle

K. Kowalski, Karol Ławniczak

Abstract The Wigner functions for the coherent states of a particle on a circle are discussed. The nontrivial analytic forms of these functions are derived. The classicality of the circular coherent states existing in the literature as well as the new ones constructed by means of the Fourier transformation of the Gaussian is compared based on negativity of the Wigner function.

Quantum statistical properties of multiphoton hypergeometric coherent states and the discrete circle representation

S. Arjika, M. Calixto, J. Guerrero

We review the definition of hypergeometric coherent states, discussing some representative examples. Then, we study mathematical and statistical properties of hypergeometric Schrödinger cat states, defined as orthonormalized eigenstates of kth powers of nonlinear f-oscillator annihilation operators, with f of the hypergeometric type. These “k-hypercats” can be written as an equally weighted superposition of hypergeometric coherent states ∣zl⟩, l = 0, 1, …, k − 1, with zl = ze2πil/k a kth root of zk, and they interpolate between number and coherent states. This fact motivates a continuous circle representation for high k. We also extend our study to truncated hypergeometric functions (finite dimensional Hilbert spaces), and a discrete exact circle representation is provided. We also show how to generate k-hypercats by amplitude dispersion in a Kerr medium and analyze their generalized Husimi Q-function in the super- and sub-Poissonian cases at different fractions of the revival time.

Ju Guo-Xing

The problems of simply and directly computing the matrix elements of coordinate operator for the harmonic oscillator in both the number states and the coherent states representations are studied in detail, the explicit procedures are given and some issues related to the methods and procedures in the literatures are commented.

Semiclassical coherent-states propagator

Alejandro M. F. Rivas

In this work, we derived a semiclassical approximation for the matrix elements of a quantum propagator in coherent states (CS) basis that avoids complex trajectories; it only involves real ones. For that purpose, we used the symplectically invariant semiclassical Weyl propagator obtained by performing a stationary phase approximation (SPA) for the path integral in the Weyl representation. After that, for the transformation to CS representation SPA is avoided; instead a quadratic expansion of the complex exponent is used. This procedure also allows us to express the semiclassical CS propagator uniquely in terms of the classical evolution of the initial point without the need of any root search typical of van Vleck--Gutzwiller-based propagators. For the case of chaotic Hamiltonian systems, the explicit time dependence of the CS propagator has been obtained. The comparison with a realistic chaotic system that derives from a quadratic Hamiltonian, the cat map, reveals that the expression here derived is exact up to quadratic Hamiltonian systems.

The coherent states of the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator and the classical limit of the Landau theory of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field

Wangyao Li, Kunnat J. Sebastian

Abstract In this paper we show how the classical result of a charged particle moving in a circle in the xy plane, when a uniform magnetic field is directed along the z -axis, can be derived from the Landau quantum theory using the coherent states of the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator in the xy plane. The coherent states in this case are the simultaneous eigen vectors of the annihilation operators a + and a − . We prove that the time-dependent coordinate space wave packets representing the time-dependent coherent states move in a circle with the cyclotron frequency ω c = ∣ q ∣ B m and with a radius given by the classical expression, but given in terms of the quantum mechanical expectation values. The expectation value of the energy of the particle and of the square of the radius of its circular are proportional to the square of the magnitude of the eigen value of a + in the coherent state, where as the x and y coordinates of the centre of the circle are proportional to the real and the imaginary parts of the eigen value of a − . The phase of the circular motion is the same as the phase of the complex eigen value of a + . So for a given energy of the particle or for a given radius of the circular orbit, there are an infinite number of circles which differ from each other by the x and y coordinates of the centre as well as the phase of the circular motion. The infinite degeneracy of the Landau levels is due to the invariance of the energy eigen values under spatial translations in the xy plane and rotations about the z -axis. We also show that as the magnitude of the eigen value of a + becomes much larger than one, the relative uncertainty or fluctuation in the energy and in the radius of the circular orbit becomes negligibly small as we expect for a classical state.
