Abstract

We study topologically nontrivial excitations of a weakly interacting, spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional square optical lattice, a system recently realized in experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 150401 (2018)]. We focus on situations where the system is not subjected to a Zeeman field and thus does not exhibit nontrivial single-particle band topology. Of special interest then is the role of particle interaction as well as its interplay with the symmetry properties of the system in producing topologically nontrivial excitations. We find that the noninteracting system possesses a rich set of symmetries, including the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the modified dihedral point-group symmetry ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{D}}_{4}$ and the nonsymmorphic symmetry. These combined symmetries ensure the existence of pairs of degenerate Dirac points at the edge of Brillouin zone for the single-particle energy bands. In the presence of particle interaction and with sufficient spin-orbit coupling, the atoms condense in a ground state with net magnetization which spontaneously breaks the $\mathcal{PT}$ and ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{D}}_{4}$ symmetry. We demonstrate that this symmetry breaking leads to a gap opening at the Dirac point for the Bogoliubov spectrum and consequentially topologically nontrivial excitations. We confirm the nontrivial topology by calculating the Chern numbers of the lowest excitation bands and show that gapless edge states form at the interface of systems characterized by different values of the Chern number.

\pi-flux Dirac bosons and Bogoliubov edge states of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms

Zhi-Fang Xu, Li You, Andreas Hemmerich +1 more

Topological edge states and Dirac fermions are fascinating phenomena known for fermionic systems. Whether similar phenomena can occur for interacting bosons is an open question in fundamental science. The recent observation of $^{87}$Rb chiral $p_x\pm ip_y$ condensates in a checkerboard optical lattice further raises the question whether a bosonic superfluid can be topological. Here we show that Dirac bosons experiencing a $\pi$ Berry flux emerge in the elementary excitation spectra of this experimentally realized Bose system. Tuning a population bias between the observed $p_x+ip_y$ and $p_x-ip_y$ condensate components opens an energy gap in the bulk, which results in Chern invariant and topologically protected Bogoliubov edge modes. Different from previous topological scenarios that employ the concept of engineered spin-orbit coupling or the equivalent in single-particle Bloch bands, spontaneous chiral orbital order driven by many-body interaction is a crucial ingredient in our finding.

Interacting quantum fluid in a polariton Chern insulator

O. Bleu, Dmitry D. Solnyshkov, G. Malpuech

We study Bogoliubov excitations of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a honeycomb periodic potential, in the presence of a Zeeman field and of a spin-orbit coupling specific for photonic systems, which is due to the energy splitting between TE and TM polarized eigenstates. We also consider spin-anisotropic interactions typical for cavity polaritons. We show that the nontrivial topology of the single-particle case is also present for the interacting system. At low condensate density, the topology of the single-particle bands is transferred to the bogolon dispersion. At a critical value, the self-induced Zeeman field at the Dirac points of the dispersion becomes equal to the real Zeeman field and then exceeds it. The gap is thus closed and then reopened with inverted Chern numbers. This change of topology is accompanied by a change of the propagation directions of the one-way edge modes. This result demonstrates that the chirality of a topological insulator can be reversed by collective effects in a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Topological Bogoliubov Quasiparticles from Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Flat Band System

Z. Jalali-Mola, Tobias Graß, Valentin Kasper +2 more

For bosons with flat energy dispersion, condensation can occur in different symmetry sectors. Here, we consider bosons in a kagome lattice with π-flux hopping, which, in the presence of mean-field interactions, exhibit degenerate condensates in the Γ and the K point. We analyze the excitation above both condensates and find strikingly different properties: For the K-point condensate, the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian has broken particle-hole symmetry and exhibits a topologically trivial quasiparticle band structure. However, band flatness plays a key role in breaking the time-reversal symmetry of the BdG Hamiltonian for a Γ-point condensate. Consequently, its quasiparticle band structure exhibits nontrivial topology, characterized by nonzero Chern numbers and by the presence of edge states. Although quantum fluctuations energetically favor the K-point condensate, the interesting properties of the Γ-point condensate become relevant for anisotropic hopping. The topological properties of the Γ-point condensate get even richer in the presence of extended Bose-Hubbard interactions. We find a topological phase transition into a topological condensate characterized by high Chern number and also comment on the realization and detection of such excitations.

Superfluidity breakdown and multiple roton gaps in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

Daniele Toniolo, Jacob Linder

We investigate the superfluid phases of a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate residing on a two-dimensional square optical lattice in the presence of an effective Zeeman field $\ensuremath{\Omega}$. At a critical value $\ensuremath{\Omega}={\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{c}$, the single-particle spectrum ${E}_{\mathbf{k}}$ changes from having a set of four degenerate minima to a single minimum at $\mathbf{k}=0$, corresponding to condensation at finite or zero momentum, respectively. We describe this quantum phase transition and the symmetry breaking of the condensate phases. We use the Bogoliubov theory to treat the superfluid phases and determine the phase diagram, the excitation spectrum, and the sound velocity of the phonon excitations. A dynamically unstable superfluid regime occurring when $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ is close to ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{c}$ is analytically identified and the behavior of the condensate quantum depletion is discussed. Moreover, we show that there are two types of roton excitations occurring in the $\ensuremath{\Omega}<{\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{c}$ regime and obtain explicit values for the corresponding energy gaps.

Ground-state phase diagram and excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling

Ke-Ji Chen, Fan Wu, Jianshen Hu +1 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram and excitation spectrum of an interacting spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM) coupling realized in recent experiments by introducing atomic Raman transition with a pair of copropagating Laguerre-Gaussian laser beams that carry different orbital angular momenta (OAM) [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 113204 (2018) and Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 110402 (2019)]. Because of the ground-state degeneracy of the single-particle Hamiltonian at vanishing detuning, several angular-stripe phases, which are the superposition of states with different angular quantum numbers, appear in the phase diagram. However, these phases normally exist at small detuning, which makes them hard to be probed in experiments. We show that for a large OAM difference of the laser beams, an asymmetric kind of angular-stripe phase can exist even at large detuning. The excitation spectra in different phases exhibit distinct features: In the angular-stripe phase there exist two gapless bands corresponding to the broken $\mathrm{U}(1)$ and rotational symmetries, while in the half-skyrmion phase the gapless band exhibits a rotonlike structure. Our predictions of the angular-stripe phases and the low-energy excitations can be examined in recently realized Bose-Einstein condensates with SOAM coupling.

Exotic Multi-fold Vortex Lattices of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

Ben Li, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground state of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in square optical lattices and demonstrate the existence of rich phases with different lattice structures, which is closely related to the degenerate structure of single particle energy spectrum induced by the competition of spin-orbit coupling and optical lattices. We find that the ground state is in the phase with either parity-time-reversal or parity symmetry by direct numerical simulation. We show the phase diagram of ground state in the whole regime of spin-orbit coupling strength, and particularly find that the system supports multi-fold vortex lattices, in which ground state holds half-quantum vortex lattices, vortex-antivortex pair lattices and fundamental vortex lattices, simultaneously, when single particle energy minimums touch the boundary of the first Brillouin zone.
