In this paper, I study the entanglement entropy in Hartle-Hawking states of JT gravity set up by a Euclidean path integral with an operator inserted somewhere along the Euclidean boundary. I show that the entanglement entropy between the dual SYK models can be written to leading order in $1/G_N$ in a way that resembles a formula for entanglement entropy in a compact lattice gauge theory, but where the link that we appear to compute the entanglement across depends on where we put the operator along the Euclidean boundary. I then describe a toy model where we can write down an explicit family of density matrices whose von Neumann entropies exhibit such a phase transition as we tune an interpolating parameter. This behavior relies on a certain superselection sector structure and I comment on the possibility that the gravitational result comes from a similar emergent superselection sector structure in SYK/JT holography. The main implication is that each copy of the SYK model should then contain Hilbert space sectors labeled by multiple $SL(2,R)$ representations whose entanglement gives rise to space.

We compute the entanglement entropy and Renyi entropies of arbitrary pure states in pure Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in Lorentz signature. We apply the quantum Hubeny-Rangamani-Ryu-Takayanagi formula by computing the quantum corrected area term and the bulk entropy term. The sum of these two terms for the Hartle-Hawking state agrees with the black hole entropy above extremality computed from the Euclidean disk path integral. We interpret the area term as the universal contribution of a defect operator that plays a crucial role in our Lorentzian interpretation of the Euclidean replica trick in gravity.
Abstract We consider the linearised graviton in 4d Minkowski space and decompose it into tensor spherical harmonics and fix the gauge. The Gauss law of gravity implies that certain radial components of the Riemann tensor of the graviton on the sphere labels the superselection sectors for the graviton. We show that among these 6 normal components of the Riemann tensor, 2 are related locally to the algebra of gauge-invariant operators in the sphere. From the two-point function of these components of the Riemann tensor on S2 we compute the logarithmic coefficient of the entanglement entropy of these superselection sectors across a spherical entangling surface. For sectors labelled by each of the two components of the Riemann tensor these coefficients are equal and their total contribution is given by −316 − 16 3 . We observe that this coefficient coincides with that extracted from the edge partition function of the massless spin-2 field on the 4-sphere when written in terms of its Harish-Chandra character. As a preliminary step, we also evaluate the logarithmic coefficient of the entanglement entropy from the superselection sectors labelled by the radial component of the electric field of the U(1) theory in even d dimensions. We show that this agrees with the corresponding coefficient of the edge Harish-Chandra character of the massless spin-1 field on Sd.
Entanglement entropy in type II1 von Neumann algebra: examples in Double-Scaled SYK
An intriguing feature of type II1 von Neumann algebra is that the entropy of the mixed states is negative. Although the type classification of von Neumann algebra and its consequence in holography have been extensively explored recently, there has not been an explicit calculation of entropy in some physically interesting models with type II1 algebra. In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy Sn of the fixed length state {∣n⟩} in Double-Scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, which has been recently shown to exhibit type II1 von Neumann algebra. These states furnish an orthogonal basis for 0-particle chord Hilbert space. We systematically study Sn and its Rényi generalizations Sn(m) in various limit of DSSYK model, ranging q∈[0,1]. We obtain exotic analytical expressions for the scaling behavior of Sn(m) at large n for random matrix theory limit (q=0) and SYK2 limit (q=1), for the former we observe highly non-flat entanglement spectrum. We then dive into triple scaling limits where the fixed chord number states become the geodesic wormholes with definite length connecting left/right AdS2 boundary in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. In semi-classical regime, we match the boundary calculation of entanglement entropy with the dilaton value at the center of geodesic, as a nontrivial check of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula.
We present a collection of recent results concerning quantum information theory applied to quantum gravity. We first study the entanglement structure of Euclidean path integral states in SU(2) Chern-Simons theory, where we elucidate a connection between topological entanglement and quantum mechanical entanglement. We prove that the topology of certain three-manifolds controls the entanglement structure of the resulting quantum state, and conjecture a more general relationship for arbitrary three-manifolds. We then analyze the quantum circuit complexity of the time evolution operator in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, a theory of near-extremal black hole microstates. We find that this complexity grows linearly for a time exponential in the entropy, modulo a caveat concerning global obstructions to the growth of the distance function along geodesics, which we do not rule out. This constitutes a partial proof of Susskind’s conjecture about the complexity growth of black holes. Finally, we address the black hole information paradox in three dimensions by considering a toy model of black hole microstates in the form of an end-of-the-world brane. This brane carries a quantum theory which is itself holographic, and we compute entanglement entropies in the glued dual geometry by using a Ryu-Takayanagi formula where the minimal entropy surface can pass through the gluing surface.
Abstract Entanglement entropy, or von Neumann entropy, quantifies the amount of uncertainty of a quantum state. For quantum fields in curved space, entanglement entropy of the quantum field theory degrees of freedom is well-defined for a fixed background geometry. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the quantum field theory entanglement entropy by including dynamical gravity. The generalized quantity named effective entropy, and its Renyi entropy generalizations, are defined by analytic continuation of a replica calculation. The replicated theory is defined as a gravitational path integral with multiple copies of the original boundary conditions, with a co-dimension-2 brane at the boundary of region we are studying. We discuss different approaches to define the region in a gauge invariant way, and show that the effective entropy satisfies the quantum extremal surface formula. When the quantum fields carry a significant amount of entanglement, the quantum extremal surface can have a topology transition, after which an entanglement island region appears. Our result generalizes the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formula of holographic entropy (with quantum corrections) to general geometries without asymptotic AdS boundary, and provides a more solid framework for addressing problems such as the Page curve of evaporating black holes in asymptotic flat spacetime. We apply the formula to two example systems, a closed two-dimensional universe and a four-dimensional maximally extended Schwarzchild black hole. We discuss the analog of the effective entropy in random tensor network models, which provides more concrete understanding of quantum information properties in general dynamical geometries. We show that, in absence of a large boundary like in AdS space case, it is essential to introduce ancilla that couples to the original system, in order for correctly characterizing quantum states and correlation functions in the random tensor network. Using the superdensity operator formalism, we study the system with ancilla and show how quantum information in the entanglement island can be reconstructed in a state-dependent and observer-dependent map. We study the closed universe (without spatial boundary) case and discuss how it is related to open universe.
