Entanglement Entropy in Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity

Abstract

We compute the entanglement entropy and Renyi entropies of arbitrary pure states in pure Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in Lorentz signature. We apply the quantum Hubeny-Rangamani-Ryu-Takayanagi formula by computing the quantum corrected area term and the bulk entropy term. The sum of these two terms for the Hartle-Hawking state agrees with the black hole entropy above extremality computed from the Euclidean disk path integral. We interpret the area term as the universal contribution of a defect operator that plays a crucial role in our Lorentzian interpretation of the Euclidean replica trick in gravity.

Flat entanglement spectra in fixed-area states of quantum gravity

Xi Dong, Daniel Harlow, Donald M. Marolf

A bstract We use the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational path integral to investigate gravita- tional entanglement at leading order O (1 /G ). We argue that semiclassical states prepared by a Euclidean path integral have the property that projecting them onto a subspace in which the Ryu-Takayanagi or Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surface has definite area gives a state with a flat entanglement spectrum at this order in gravitational perturbation theory. This means that the reduced density matrix can be approximated as proportional to the identity to the extent that its Renyi entropies Sn are independent of n at this order. The n -dependence of Sn in more general states then arises from sums over the RT/HRT- area, which are generally dominated by different values of this area for each n . This provides a simple picture of gravitational entanglement, bolsters the connection between holographic systems and tensor network models, clarifies the bulk interpretation of alge- braic centers which arise in the quantum error-correcting description of holography, and strengthens the connection between bulk and boundary modular Hamiltonians described by Jafferis, Lewkowycz, Maldacena, and Suh.

Entanglement entropy in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with matter

Jennifer Lin

In this paper, I study the entanglement entropy in Hartle-Hawking states of JT gravity set up by a Euclidean path integral with an operator inserted somewhere along the Euclidean boundary. I show that the entanglement entropy between the dual SYK models can be written to leading order in $1/G_N$ in a way that resembles a formula for entanglement entropy in a compact lattice gauge theory, but where the link that we appear to compute the entanglement across depends on where we put the operator along the Euclidean boundary. I then describe a toy model where we can write down an explicit family of density matrices whose von Neumann entropies exhibit such a phase transition as we tune an interpolating parameter. This behavior relies on a certain superselection sector structure and I comment on the possibility that the gravitational result comes from a similar emergent superselection sector structure in SYK/JT holography. The main implication is that each copy of the SYK model should then contain Hilbert space sectors labeled by multiple $SL(2,R)$ representations whose entanglement gives rise to space.

Where the Quantum World Meets Gravity: Entanglement Entropy and the Thermodynamics of Black Holes

L. G. Zazunov, Michael Shatnev

Black holes are windows into the deepest structures of reality, where quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and geometry converge. In this pedagogical preprint we explore how quantum entanglement entropy provides a microscopic foundation for black hole thermodynamics. Starting from rst principles of quantum information theory, we introduce entanglement entropy, the area law, and Hawking radiation, then proceed to modern results: the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, quantum extremal surfaces, the Page curve, replica wormholes, and the island formula. Throughout, the emphasis is on physical intuition. No prior knowledge of string theory or loop quantum gravity is assumed.

Effective entropy of quantum fields coupled with gravity

Xi Dong, Qi, Xiao-Liang, Shangnan, Zhou +1 more

Entanglement entropy, or von Neumann entropy, quantifies the amount of uncertainty of a quantum state. For quantum fields in curved space, entanglement entropy of the quantum field theory degrees of freedom is well-defined for a fixed background geometry. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the quantum field theory entanglement entropy by including dynamical gravity. The generalized quantity named effective entropy, and its Renyi entropy generalizations, are defined by analytic continuation of a replica calculation. The replicated theory is defined as a gravitational path integral with multiple copies of the original boundary conditions, with a co-dimension-2 brane at the boundary of region we are studying. We discuss different approaches to define the region in a gauge invariant way, and show that the effective entropy satisfies the quantum extremal surface formula. When the quantum fields carry a significant amount of entanglement, the quantum extremal surface can have a topology transition, after which an entanglement island region appears. Our result generalizes the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formula of holographic entropy (with quantum corrections) to general geometries without asymptotic AdS boundary, and provides a more solid framework for addressing problems such as the Page curve of evaporating black holes in asymptotic flat spacetime. We apply the formula to two example systems, a closed two-dimensional universe and a four-dimensional maximally extended Schwarzchild black hole. We discuss the analog of the effective entropy in random tensor network models, which provides more concrete understanding of quantum information properties in general dynamical geometries. We show that, in absence of a large boundary like in AdS space case, it is essential to introduce ancilla that couples to the original system, in order for correctly characterizing quantum states and correlation functions in the random tensor network. Using the superdensity operator formalism, we study the system with ancilla and show how quantum information in the entanglement island can be reconstructed in a state-dependent and observer-dependent map. We study the closed universe (without spatial boundary) case and discuss how it is related to open universe.

Rényi entropies and area operator from gravity with Hayward term

Botta Cantcheff, Marcelo Angel Nicolas, Pedro J. Martínez, Zárate Chahín, Juan Felipe

In the context of the holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of ordinary QFT in a subregion in the boundary is given by a quarter of the area of an minimal surface embedded in the bulk spacetime. This rule has been also extended to a suitable one-parameter generalization of the von-Neuman entropy $\\hat{S}_n$ that is related to the Renyi entropies $S_n$, as given by the area of a \\emph{cosmic brane} minimally coupled with gravity, with a tension related to $n$ that vanishes as $n\\to1$, and moreover, this parameter can be analytically extended to arbitrary real values. However, the brane action plays no role in the duality and cannot be considered a part of the theory of gravity, thus it is used as an auxiliary tool to find the correct background geometry. In this work we study the construction of the gravitational (reduced) density matrix from holographic states, whose wave-functionals are described as euclidean path integrals with arbitrary conditions on the asymptotic boundaries, and argue that in general, a non-trivial Hayward term must be haven into account. So we propose that the gravity model with a coupled Nambu-Goto action is not an artificial tool to account for the Renyi entropies, but it is present in the own gravity action through a Hayward term. As a result we show that the computations using replicas simplify considerably and we recover the holographic prescriptions for the measures of entanglement entropy; in particular, derive an area law for the original Renyi entropies ($S_n$) related to a minimal surface in the $n$ replicated spacetime. Moreover, we show that the gravitational modular flow contains the area operator and can explain the Jafferis-Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Suh proposal.
