Effective scaling approach to frictionless quantum quenches in trapped Bose gases

Abstract

We work out the effective scaling approach to frictionless quantum quenches in a one-dimensional Bose gas trapped in a harmonic trap. The effective scaling approach produces an auxiliary equation for the scaling parameter interpolating between the noninteracting and the Thomas-Fermi limits. This allows us to implement a frictionless quench by inversely engineering the smooth trap frequency, as compared to the two-jump bang control. Our result is beneficial to design a shortcut-to-adiabaticity expansion of trapped Bose gases for arbitrary values of interaction, and can be directly extended to the three-dimensional case.

Frictionless quantum quenches in ultracold gases: A quantum-dynamical microscope

Adolfo del Campo

In this Rapid Communication, a method is proposed to spatially scale up a trapped ultracold gas while conserving the quantum correlations of the initial many-body state. For systems supporting self-similar dynamics, this is achieved by implementing an engineered finite-time quench of the harmonic trap, which induces a frictionless expansion of the gas and acts as a quantum dynamical microscope.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity for an interacting Bose–Einstein condensate via exact solutions of the generalized Ermakov equation

Tangyou Huang, Boris A. Malomed, Xi Chen

Shortcuts to adiabatic expansion of the effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in the harmonic-oscillator (HO) trap are investigated by combining techniques of variational approximation and inverse engineering. Piecewise-constant (discontinuous) intermediate trap frequencies, similar to the known bang-bang forms in the optimal-control theory, are derived from an exact solution of a generalized Ermakov equation. Control schemes considered in the paper include imaginary trap frequencies at short time scales, i.e., the HO potential replaced by the quadratic repulsive one. Taking into regard the BEC's intrinsic nonlinearity, results are reported for the minimal transfer time, excitation energy (which measures deviation from the effective adiabaticity), and stability for the shortcut-to-adiabaticity protocols. These results are not only useful for the realization of fast frictionless cooling, but also help us to address fundamental problems of the quantum speed limit and thermodynamics.

Scaling equations for Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics across all interaction regimes

D. C. Marinica, C. Puertas González, T. Estrampes +5 more

We derive a unified set of scaling equations for Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent harmonic traps, connecting the weakly interacting Gaussian regime to the strongly interacting Thomas-Fermi regime. The exact Gross-Pitaevskii ground-state density is taken as a fixed profile in rescaled coordinates, with its dynamics described by three scaling factors corresponding to compression or expansion along the three spatial directions. The resulting equations contain no adjustable parameter, since their coefficients are determined once from the initial state. They recover analytically the Gaussian variational and Thomas-Fermi scaling equations in their respective limits and satisfy an axis-resolved virial theorem. The approach also yields the global phase and the low-lying collective-mode frequencies of the condensate. We benchmark the model against three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations and against measured expansion energies. The model remains accurate across all interaction regimes, in strongly anisotropic traps, and along time-dependent sequences including a relatively fast quench, up to the point where the underlying frozen-profile hypothesis, shared by all three scaling approaches, breaks down.

Frictionless dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates under fast trap variations

J. G. Muga, Xi Chen, A. Ruschhaupt

A method is proposed to design the time dependence of the trap frequency and achieve in a short time an adiabatic-like (frictionless) evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Different cases depending on the effective dimension of the trap and the interaction regimes are considered.2D traps are particularly suitable as the method can be applied without the need to impose any additional time-dependent change in the strength of the interatomic interaction or a Thomas-Fermi regime as it occurs for 1D and 3D traps.

Fast frictionless dynamics as a toolbox for low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

A. del Campo

A method is proposed to implement a fast frictionless dynamics in a low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate by engineering the time dependence of the transverse confining potential in a highly anisotropic trap. The method exploits the inversion of the dynamical self-similar scaling law in the radial degrees of freedom. We discuss the application of the method to preserve short-range correlations in time-of-flight experiments, the implementation of nearly sudden quenches of non-linear interactions, and its power to assist self-similar dynamics in quasi–one-dimensional condensates.
