Abstract

A method is proposed to design the time dependence of the trap frequency and achieve in a short time an adiabatic-like (frictionless) evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Different cases depending on the effective dimension of the trap and the interaction regimes are considered.2D traps are particularly suitable as the method can be applied without the need to impose any additional time-dependent change in the strength of the interatomic interaction or a Thomas-Fermi regime as it occurs for 1D and 3D traps.

Numerical study of the coupled time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation: Application to Bose-Einstein condensation

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We present a numerical study of the coupled time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which describes the Bose-Einstein condensate of several types of trapped bosons at ultralow temperature with both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. The same approach is used to study both stationary and time-evolution problems. We consider up to four types of atoms in the study of stationary problems. We consider the time-evolution problems where the frequencies of the traps or the atomic scattering lengths are suddenly changed in a stable preformed condensate. We also study the effect of periodically varying these frequencies or scattering lengths on a preformed condensate. These changes introduce oscillations in the condensate, which are studied in detail. Good convergence is obtained in all cases studied.

Scaling equations for Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics across all interaction regimes

D. C. Marinica, C. Puertas González, T. Estrampes +5 more

We derive a unified set of scaling equations for Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent harmonic traps, connecting the weakly interacting Gaussian regime to the strongly interacting Thomas-Fermi regime. The exact Gross-Pitaevskii ground-state density is taken as a fixed profile in rescaled coordinates, with its dynamics described by three scaling factors corresponding to compression or expansion along the three spatial directions. The resulting equations contain no adjustable parameter, since their coefficients are determined once from the initial state. They recover analytically the Gaussian variational and Thomas-Fermi scaling equations in their respective limits and satisfy an axis-resolved virial theorem. The approach also yields the global phase and the low-lying collective-mode frequencies of the condensate. We benchmark the model against three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations and against measured expansion energies. The model remains accurate across all interaction regimes, in strongly anisotropic traps, and along time-dependent sequences including a relatively fast quench, up to the point where the underlying frozen-profile hypothesis, shared by all three scaling approaches, breaks down.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity for growing condensates

Zalihe Ozcakmakli, C. Yüce

We investigate fast frictionless expansion for growing Bose?Einstein condensates described by the Gross?Pitaevskii gain equation. We show that fast frictionless expansion can be generalized to a condensate continuously replenished by pumping from the reservoir. We apply our formalism to the harmonically trapped condensate and an optical lattice.

Bose-Einstein Condensation Dynamics from the Numerical Solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation by the Pseudospectral Method

Paulsamy Muruganandam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

We study certain stationary and time-evolution problems of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates of weakly interacting alkali atoms described by a nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. We suggest a pseudospectral method involving Laguerre polynomials to solve the time dependent GP for a spherically symmetric trap potential. The radial wavefunction and energy values have been calculated for different nonlinearities. Further, we study the effect of suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or harmonic oscillator trap potential in the condensate. We also investigate the frequency of oscillation due to the variation in the strength of nonlinearity.

Numerical study of the spherically symmetric Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two space dimensions

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We present a numerical study of the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in two space dimensions, which describes the Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped bosons at ultralow temperature with both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. Both time-dependent and time-independent GP equations are used to study the stationary problems. In addition the time-dependent approach is used to study some evolution problems of the condensate. Specifically, we study the evolution problem where the trap energy is suddenly changed in a stable preformed condensate. In this case the system oscillates with increasing amplitude and does not remain limited between two stable configurations. Good convergence is obtained in all cases studied.
