Recombination in the universal four-fermion system

Abstract

In the systems of spin 12 fermions with resonant S-wave interactions supporting only weakly bound dimers the antisymmetry forbids recombination of three (or more) fermions at zero energy. However, the fermion-fermion-dimer recombination is only partially suppressed. It is studied in the framework of momentum-space integral equations for the four-particle transition operators. In the vicinity of the unitary limit the fermion-fermion-dimer recombination rate, rescaled to build dimensionless quantity, is found to be linear in the effective range parameter, enabling a simple and accurate parametrization as well as evaluation of finite-range effects for any potential model. This feature makes the present results very useful in benchmarking different methods for three-cluster breakup and recombination calculations in four-particle systems. The interplay of the three-fermion and fermion-fermion-dimer recombination processes and their consequences for ultracold mixtures of fermions and dimers is discussed.

Universality in fermionic dimer-dimer scattering

Arnoldas Deltuva

Collisions of two fermionic dimers near the unitary limit are studied using exact four-particle equations for transition operators in momentum space. Universal properties of dimer-dimer phase shifts and effective range expansion (ERE) parameters are determined. The inclusion of the fourth-order momentum term in the ERE significantly extends its validity to higher collision energies. The dimer-dimer scattering length and effective range are determined in the unitary limit as well as their corrections arising due to the finite range of the two-fermion interaction. These results are of considerably higher accuracy as compared to previous works, but confirm most of the previous results except for the lattice effective field theory calculations.

Three-body recombination in a single-component Fermi gas with p -wave interaction

Shangguo Zhu, Zhenhua Yu, Shizhong Zhang

We study the three-body recombination of identical fermionic atoms. Using a zero-range model for the $p$-wave interaction, we show that the rate constant of three-body recombination into weakly bound $p$-wave dimers can be written as ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{rec}}\ensuremath{\propto}{v}^{5/2}{R}^{1/2}{k}_{T}^{4}(1+C{k}_{T}^{2}{l}_{d}^{2})$ for large and positive scattering volume $v$. Here $R$ is the $p$-wave effective range, ${k}_{T}^{2}$ gives the average thermal kinetic energy of the colliding atoms, and ${l}_{d}$ is the size of the $p$-wave dimer. The leading term is different from the usually stated ${v}^{8/3}$-scaling law, but is consistent with an earlier two-channel calculation. For the subleading term, we compute the constant $C$ by solving the relevant three-body problem perturbatively when the parameter $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\equiv}R/{v}^{1/3}$ is small. The additional $C{k}_{T}^{2}{l}_{d}^{2}$ term provides important corrections for the temperature and interaction dependence of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{rec}}$, especially close to resonance when ${k}_{T}{l}_{d}$ is relatively large.

Ultracold three-body recombination in two dimensions

José Paulo D'Incao, Fatima Anis, Brett D. Esry

We study three-body recombination in two dimensions for systems interacting via short-range two-body interactions in the regime of large scattering lengths. Using the adiabatic hyperspherical representation, we derive semianalytical formulas for three-body recombination in both weakly and deeply bound diatom states. Our results demonstrate the importance of long-range corrections to the three-body potentials by showing how they alter the low-energy and scattering-length dependence of the recombination rate for both bosonic and fermionic systems, which exhibit suppressed recombination if compared to the three-dimensional case. We verify these results through numerical calculations of recombination for systems with finite-range interactions and supporting a few two-body bound states. We also study finite-range effects for the energies of the universal three-identical-bosons states and find a slow approach to universal predictions as a function of the scattering length.

Few-Body Physics in Quantum Gases

K. Helfrich

Few-body effects play an important role for the understanding of ultracold quantum gases. We make use of an effective field theory approach to investigate various aspects of universal few-body physics close to a Feshbach resonance. That is the regime where the scattering length is large compared to all other length scales of the system and thus determines the observables. It is also the regime where the Efimov effect whose main characteristic is the occurrence of a sequence of three-body bound states becomes important. At unitarity, i.e., for diverging scattering length, the ratio of binding energies of neighboring states approaches a constant. The existence of those trimers can be captured by a single three-body parameter and influences observables such as recombination rates. Starting from adequate Lagrangians, we derive atom-dimer scattering amplitudes that contain all information of interest about the three-particle systems. With this method, we first investigate the scattering of atoms and dimers at finite temperature in the presence of the Efimov effect. We calculate the dimer relaxation rate and obtain good agreement with available experimental data. Furthermore, heteronuclear mixtures exhibiting large interspecies scattering length are studied in detail. If bosons are the majority species, the Efimov effect occurs in an S-wave channel and we are able to compute three-body recombination and dimer relaxation rates. The results are compared to the outcome of two existing experiments. For mainly fermionic systems, the Efimov effect is only present in an overall P-wave and three-body recombination at threshold vanishes. However, in mixtures of atoms and dimers, scattering cross sections and dimer relaxation show the typical Efimov behavior of log-periodicity. We also consider two-dimensional Bose gases, where the Efimov effect does not occur. For those systems, we derive an equation including the first non-universal corrections and deduce three-body observables such as binding energies and atom-dimer scattering parameters.

Three and four identical fermions near the unitary limit

Michael D. Higgins, Chris H. Greene

This work analyzes the three and four equal-mass fermionic systems near and at the $s$- and $p$-wave unitary limits using hyperspherical methods. The unitary regime addressed here is where the two-body dimer energy is at zero energy. For fermionic systems near the $s$-wave unitary limit, the hyperradial potentials in the $N$-body continuum exhibit a universal long-range ${R}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ behavior governed by the $s$-wave scattering length alone. The implications of this behavior on the low-energy phase shift are discussed. At the $p$-wave unitary limit, the four-body system is studied through a qualitative look at the structure of the hyperradial potentials at unitarity for the ${L}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={0}^{+}$ symmetry. A quantitative analysis shows that there are tetramer states in the lowest hyperradial potentials for these systems. Correlations are made between these tetramers and the corresponding trimers in the two-body fragmentation channels. Universal properties related to the four-body recombination process $A+A+A+A\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{A}_{3}+A$ are discussed.

Three fully polarized fermions close to a p-wave Feshbach resonance

M. Jona-Lasinio, Ludovic Pricoupenko, Yvan Castin

We study the three-body problem for three atomic fermions, in the same spin state, experiencing a resonant interaction in the p-wave channel via a Feshbach resonance represented by a two-channel model. The rate of inelastic processes due to recombination to deeply bound dimers is then estimated from the three-body solution using a simple prescription. We obtain numerical and analytical predictions for most of the experimentally relevant quantities that can be extracted from the three-body solution: the existence of weakly bound trimers and their lifetime, the low-energy elastic and inelastic scattering properties of an atom on a weakly bound dimer (including the atom-dimer scattering length and scattering volume), and the recombination rates for three colliding atoms towards weakly bound and deeply bound dimers. The effect of "background" non-resonant interactions in the open channel of the two-channel model is also calculated and allows to determine which three-body quantities are `universal' and which on the contrary depend on the details of the model.
