Abstract

We study the three-body recombination of identical fermionic atoms. Using a zero-range model for the $p$-wave interaction, we show that the rate constant of three-body recombination into weakly bound $p$-wave dimers can be written as ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{rec}}\ensuremath{\propto}{v}^{5/2}{R}^{1/2}{k}_{T}^{4}(1+C{k}_{T}^{2}{l}_{d}^{2})$ for large and positive scattering volume $v$. Here $R$ is the $p$-wave effective range, ${k}_{T}^{2}$ gives the average thermal kinetic energy of the colliding atoms, and ${l}_{d}$ is the size of the $p$-wave dimer. The leading term is different from the usually stated ${v}^{8/3}$-scaling law, but is consistent with an earlier two-channel calculation. For the subleading term, we compute the constant $C$ by solving the relevant three-body problem perturbatively when the parameter $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\equiv}R/{v}^{1/3}$ is small. The additional $C{k}_{T}^{2}{l}_{d}^{2}$ term provides important corrections for the temperature and interaction dependence of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{rec}}$, especially close to resonance when ${k}_{T}{l}_{d}$ is relatively large.

Three-body contact for fermions. I. General relations

Félix Werner, X. Leyronas

We consider the resonant Fermi gas, that is, two-component fermions in three dimensions interacting by a short-range potential of large scattering length. We introduce a quantity, the three-body contact, that determines several observables. Within the zero-range model, the number of nearby fermion triplets, the large-momentum tail of the center-of-mass momentum distribution of nearby fermion pairs, as well as the large-momentum tail of the two-particle momentum distribution, are expressed in terms of the three-body contact. For a small finite interaction range, the formation rate of deeply bound dimers by three-body recombination, as well as the three-body contribution to the finite-range correction to the energy, are expressed in terms of the three-body contact and of a three-body parameter. This three-body parameter, which vanishes in the zero-range limit, is defined through the asymptotic behavior of the zero-energy scattering state at distances intermediate between the range and the two-body scattering length. In general, the three-body contact has different contributions labeled by spin and angular momentum indices, and the three-body parameter can depend on those indices. We also include the generalization to unequal masses for $\uparrow$ and $\downarrow$ particles. With respect to the relation between three-body loss rate and number of nearby triplets stated in [Petrov, Salomon and Shlyapnikov, PRL 93, 090404 (2004)], the present work adds a derivation, expresses the proportionality factor in terms of the three-body parameter, and includes the general case where there are several contributions to the three-body contact and several three-body parameters.

Effective-range corrections to three-body recombination for atoms with large scattering length

H.‐W. Hammer, Timo A. Lähde, Lucas Platter

Few-body systems with large scattering length $a$ have universal properties that do not depend on the details of their interactions at short distances. The rate constant for three-body recombination of bosonic atoms of mass $m$ into a shallow dimer scales as $\ensuremath{\hbar}{a}^{4}∕m$ times a log-periodic function of the scattering length. We calculate the leading and subleading corrections to the rate constant, which are due to the effective range of the atoms, and study the correlation between the rate constant and the atom-dimer scattering length. Our results are applied to $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ atoms as a test case.

Three fully polarized fermions close to a p -wave Feshbach resonance

M. Jona-Lasinio, Ludovic Pricoupenko, Yvan Castin

We study the three-body problem for three atomic fermions, in the same spin state, experiencing a resonant interaction in the $\mathit{p}$-wave channel via a Feshbach resonance represented by a two-channel model. The rate of inelastic processes due to recombination to deeply bound dimers is then estimated from the three-body solution using a simple prescription. We obtain numerical and analytical predictions for most of the experimentally relevant quantities that can be extracted from the three-body solution: the existence of weakly bound trimers and their lifetime, the low-energy elastic and inelastic scattering properties of an atom on a weakly bound dimer (including the atom-dimer scattering length and scattering volume), and the recombination rates for three colliding atoms towards weakly bound and deeply bound dimers. The effect of ``background'' nonresonant interactions in the open channel of the two-channel model is also calculated and allows one to determine which three-body quantities are ``universal'' and which on the contrary depend on the details of the model.

Three-body problem in a two-dimensional Fermi gas

Ngampruetikorn, V, Parish, MM, Jesper Levinsen

We investigate the three-body properties of two identical ↑ fermions and one distinguishable ↓ atom interacting in a strongly confined two-dimensional geometry. We compute exactly the atom-dimer scattering properties and the three-body recombination rate as a function of collision energy and mass ratio m ↑ /m ↓ .We find that the recombination rate for fermions is strongly energy dependent, with significant contributions from higher partial waves at low energies. For m ↑ m ↓ , the s-wave atom-dimer scattering below threshold is completely described by the scattering length.Furthermore, we examine the ↑↑↓ bound states (trimers) appearing at large m ↑ /m ↓ and find that the energy spectrum for the deepest bound trimers resembles that of a hydrogen atom confined to two dimensions.

We study the three-body recombination of identical fermionic atoms. Using a zero-range model for the ppp-wave interaction, we show that the rate constant of three-body recombination into weakly bound ppp-wave dimers can be written as \ensuremathαrec\ensuremath∝v5/2R1/2kT4(1+CkT2ld2){\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{rec}}\ensuremath{\propto}{v}^{5/2}{R}^{1/2}{k}_{T}^{4}(1+C{k}_{T}^{2}{l}_{d}^{2})\ensuremathαrec\ensuremath∝v5/2R1/2kT4(1+CkT2ld2) for large and positive scattering volume vvv. Here RRR is the ppp-wave effective range, kT2{k}_{T}^{2}kT2 gives the average thermal kinetic energy of the colliding atoms, and ld{l}_{d}ld is the size of the ppp-wave dimer. The leading term is different from the usually stated v8/3{v}^{8/3}v8/3-scaling law, but is consistent with an earlier two-channel calculation.
