Abstract

In this paper, we derive a general expression of the quantum Fisher information of an SU(1,1) interferometer with an arbitrary state and a Fock state as inputs by the phase-averaging method. Our results show that the same quantum Fisher information can be obtained regardless of the specific form of the arbitrary state. Then, we analytically prove that the parity measurement can saturate the quantum Cramer-Rao bound when the estimated phase sits at the optimal working point. For practical reasons, we investigate the phase sensitivity when the arbitrary state is a coherent or thermal state. We further show that a Fock state can indeed enhance the phase sensitivity within a constraint on the total mean photon number inside the interferometer.

SU(1,1) interferometry with parity measurement

Shuai Wang, Jiandong Zhang

We present a new operator method in the Heisenberg representation to obtain the signal of parity measurement within a lossless SU(1,1) interferometer. Based on this method, it is convenient to derive the parity signal directly in terms of input states, including general Gaussian and non-Gaussian states. As applications, we revisit the signal of parity measurement within an SU(1,1) interferometer when a coherent or thermal state and a squeezed vacuum state are considered as input states. In addition, we obtain the parity signal of an arbitrary single-mode state when it passes through an SU(1,1) interferometer, which is also a new result. Then, we analytically prove that parity measurement can saturate the quantum Cramér–Rao bound when the estimated phase approaches zero. Therefore, the operator method proposed in this work may bring convenience to the study of quantum metrology, particularly the phase estimation based on an SU(1,1) interferometer.

Quantum-Enhanced Phase Estimation with Photon-Added Even and Odd Coherent States in an SU(1,1) Interferometer

Abdelmajid El Maaroufi, Mouad Ait Maskour, Bouchra Maroufi +2 more

We investigate phase estimation in an SU(1,1) interferometer employing $m$-photon-added even and odd coherent states as nonclassical input resources. The phase sensitivity is evaluated through intensity detection and the error propagation method, while the ultimate precision limit is determined from the quantum Cramér-Rao bound with the quantum Fisher information serving as the relevant metrological quantity. Our results demonstrate that photon addition significantly enhances the phase sensitivity, increases the quantum Fisher information, and reduces the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, leading to a clear improvement over the corresponding even and odd coherent states. Furthermore, the achievable sensitivity exceeds the standard quantum limit and gradually approaches the Heisenberg scaling with increasing photon-addition number. We also find that the $m$-photon-added even coherent states exhibit a modest advantage over their odd counterparts. As $m$ increases, however, this distinction becomes progressively weaker, suggesting that photon addition diminishes the role of the initial parity of the coherent state in determining the interferometric performance.

Quantum interferometry via a coherent state mixed with a squeezed number state

Li-Li Hou, Yongxing Sui, Shuai Wang +1 more

We theoretically investigate the phase sensitivity with parity measurement on a Mach–Zehnder interferometer with a coherent state combined with a squeezed number state. Within a constraint on the total mean photon number, we find, via parity measurement, that the mixing of a coherent state and squeezed number state can give better phase sensitivity than mixing a coherent state and squeezed vacuum state when the phase shift deviates from the optimal phase φ =0. In addition, we show that the classical Fisher information for parity measurement saturates the quantum Fisher information when the phase shift approaches to zero. Thus, the quantum Cramér–Rao bound can be reached via the parity measurement in the case of φ =0.

Two-mode quantum interferometry with a single-mode Fock state and parity detection

Shuai Wang, Yao‐Ting Wang, Liang-Jun Zhai +1 more

We derive a general expression of the expectation value of the parity operator in a Mach–Zehnder interferometer with a Fock state in one input port and an arbitrary state in the other input. We obtain the quantum Crámer–Rao bound via the error propagation method from parity detection for the phase shift around zero. In addition, for an arbitrary state with the same mean photon number, our results show that the same phase resolution and the same phase uncertainty can be obtained for the phase shift around zero. That is to say, when a Mach–Zehnder interferometer is powered by a Fock state into one input port, all quantum states with same mean photon number at the other input may have the same performance in the phase estimation via parity detection. As some specific applications, we consider the arbitrary state being a Fock state, a coherent state, and a squeezed-vacuum state.

Phase estimation of phase shifts in two arms for an SU(1,1) interferometer with coherent and squeezed vacuum states

Qian-Kun Gong, Dong Li, Chun-Hua Yuan +2 more

We theoretically present the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds (QCRB) of an SU(1,1) interferometer for Gaussian states input with and without the internal photonic losses. The phase shifts in the single arm and in the double arms are studied and the corresponding analytical expressions of quantum Fisher information with Gaussian input states are presented. Different from the traditional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the QCRB of single arm case is slightly higher or lower than that of double arms case depending on the input states. With a fixed mean photon number and for pure Gaussian state input, the optimal sensitivity is achieved with a squeezed vacuum input in one mode and the vacuum input in the other. We compare the QCRB with the standard quantum limit and Heisenberg limit. In the case of small internal losses the QCRB can beat the standard quantum limit.

Enhancing Phase Estimation in an SU(1,1) Interferometer via Kerr Nonlinearity and Photon Addition

Lifen Guo, Qingqian Kang, Zekun Zhao +7 more

ABSTRACT We enhance phase sensitivity in an SU(1,1) interferometer by combining a Kerr nonlinear phase shifter with multi‐photon addition. Using coherent and vacuum states as inputs, we analyze phase sensitivity and the quantum Fisher information under ideal and lossy conditions. We show that both phase sensitivity and the quantum Cramér‐Rao bound (QCRB) improve gradually as the total mean photon number increases. For the standard SU(1,1) interferometer, phase sensitivity does not saturate the QCRB, even with multi‐photon addition. In contrast, for the Kerr‐based SU(1,1) interferometer, phase sensitivity nearly saturates the QCRB under ideal conditions and remains optimal at high transmissivity under loss. The Kerr‐based scheme surpasses the standard quantum limit, approaches the sub‐Heisenberg limit, and exhibits enhanced robustness against moderate losses. Our scheme is feasible with current technology and provides a promising route for high‐precision quantum metrology.
